New Police vehicle offerings: Are they enough?

Featured Replies

*I just messaged a staff member, and they said it would be okay to make a new one, as my topic is slightly different than this:

So, do you think Ford is out of the police market? The other day, I was at a garage, and everyone was comparing the Taurus to the Crown Victoria. I felt the front end, and the entire front was made out of plastic. It was flimsy, and I was able to bend it. It only has 1000 Miles on it, and they're already having problems with the electronics in it, the windows for example no longer work. They only roll up.

So, Ford is probably going to have some problems unless they beef up the parts on the new Intercepter. I'm not even going to talk about the Ford Explorer Intercepter SUV counter part, as those things are junk in my opinion, and already have many issues brand new.

The Charger has great performance, but some departments have complained that it's not big enough, and can be very cramped.

So far, I have heard good things about the Caprice, but not alot since only a few departments have them (are they even out yet?).

So, I think it's going to be a tie between Chevrolet and Dodge.

But now I ask you guys; Was it a big mistake for Ford to discontinue the Crown Victoria? Also, a personaly question that I just thought of: do you think Ford will ever bring back the Crown Victoria?

Are the new offerings enough to replace the big shoes of the Crown Victoria?

I'm a huge Ford bloke, love them to bits, cracking cars in every aspect. But they really are not doing themselves any further, the 2013 Ford PI looks amazing, but they are losing forces each day by not starting the new production line, Chevy is already producing the Caprice, and Dodge is also supplying Chargers, and both has been doing so for a while now.

Every mid to large size forces will try and unify their fleet for easier maintenance and lower purchasing costs, other brands (Chevy, Dodge) saw their opportunity here by both conveniently launching new PPV's while Ford is busy doing other things.

There will be problems with the new PI, as will there with the Caprice and Charger, every new model will have issues, that's just the way it is, even big expensive luxury cars will have issues in the beginning, judging cars based on those issues aren't fair.

The PI is a big change, both design wise (it actually has a design now, compared to the CVPI which isn't exactly the Kate Upton of cars), and also performance wise. It's nice to see the Yanks realising that their big, sluggish V8's aren't the best in the world, but the Turbo charged V6's might not play along initially. We had problems with our Mondeo 2,5 Turbos catching fire after being raped from a cold start, Ford had to revise the turbos due to that.

Lets not forget that the CVPI weren't exactly the mighty saviour when it first arrived, it also had its technical difficulties.

Personally, I think that Ford IS losing market share, and they are going to be seriously on their arses if the new PI aren't ready soon (some forces in both the US and Canada has bought Civillian Taurus'es), I've already seen a fair few photos of Caprices in service with s

i run a car lot and we buy most of floridas old cop cars. last year we were down there and bought 22 of the crown vics and i heard thay had bought 500 of the last crown vics that were made and is storeing them becase thay said the chargers thay had was not holding up like the crow vics. and if you go to govdeals.com you will see a lot of chargers up for sale with low miles with bad motors.

Crown Vic's are so common because department's want the engine, also in my opinion, they also look very professional, unlike the ford taurus, the Charger model's give department's the..... "Boss" look that say's "come at me bro"

Of course it feels like plastic, it is plastic. Pretty much all cars built within the last 20-30 years have had plastic parts including the Crown Vic. I'm not a huge fan of the new police cars Ford is rolling out, they should have stuck with the Crown Vic. The CVPI has been the best selling police car since Chevy stopped making the Caprice and maybe even before then so why would you stop making that? With the combination of the CVPI no longer being in produciton and Dodge making improvements on their Charger and Chevy coming back with the infamous Caprice which was a favorite among police Ford is in for some serious competition in the police car market. I think it was a bad idea for Ford to stop making the CVPI, I notice a lot of agencies around me going to the new Chargers.

I spent a lot of time doing ride alongs with my sheriff's office when I was an explorer and many of them said their favorite police car they ever drove was the Caprice or Crown Vic. Unfortunately our sheriff's office switched to primarily Impalas which have been hated by almost everyone in the sheriff's office.

nat: I have heard the same thing about some of the 2008 Chargers as well. One of the local PDs in my county switched to almost all Chargers and they bought about 5-6 2008 Chargers and they were constantly having eletrical issues so they actually bought some new CVPIs a couple years later. They bought a couple of the new Chargers recently but I haven't got to talk to my buddies over there yet to see how their holding up.

Slimroy: I don't think it is just the engine the departments are looking for because a lot of the agencies around me that were using the CVPIs are now going to the new Chargers but are getting the V6 version, not the V8s. I think one of the reasons the CVPI is so popular is because they are so reliable and durable. EVI said it best, you can beat those Crown Vics so much and they will still get up and go without skipping a beat. In addition to the CVPIs reliability they are also rear wheel drive (something that departments try to stick with usually), and they are pretty big cars so they can hold a lot of the equipment that police cars need to carry (I spent most of my ride alongs in Impalas and they are pretty cramped).

@l3ubba, what's so bad about the new impala as a police vehicle?

They are front wheel drive, handle like shit, a lot smaller, and very unreliable. When I was an explorer with my sheriff's office I logged about 1500 hours of ride along time with patrol and I'd say about 4/5 of the time was spent in an Impala. It wasn't hard to loose an Impala (and due to our strict vehicle pursuit policy people liked to run from us a lot), it was so small and cramped inside (and I'm not a very big guy), I rode with one of the guys who was on the SWAT team and he had to keep all of his gear with him in case he was called out and there was barely enough room for me to get in the car because his trunk was literally packed to the top and I had to sit with a bunch of gear in my lap the whole 12 hours. Then on top of that our Impalas were always breaking down. The most common issues were the A/C dying on us (and in Florida summer heat you NEED A/C) and a gasket (can't remember the exact part name) was always getting blown. Plus if you get out on the east side of the county it gets pretty rural and I can recall a few times when we got stuck and had to wait a couple hours for the agency tow truck to come pull us out. So yeah I'd say that I've had some bad experiences with the Impala.

Head Gasket.

Anyways, the Crown Victoria's were full frame, which made them heavy in weight, resulting in bad gas mileage.

Once they got bent in a accident, they had a machine called a frame straightener, they would put the car in it and the machine would bend it back into place. LA and New York used to have these.

Now with a car that isn't full frame, you can't do that. So since the Crown Victoria was the last sedan with a full frame, those machines are going unless they can also be used with SUV's. I wonder if Dodge or Chevrolet could make a full frame car, with good gas mileage? But then you would have to cut down on engine power.

the 05 06 we bought last year got around 26 miles a gallon city becase of the police packeg. here were i live there is a big demand for the police crown vics.

Yes, thank you, it was the head gasket. Those little bastards were always getting blown and had to be replaced.

That was the primary reason my S.O. went to Impalas. The sheriff actually wanted to buy Crown Vics which were a little bit more expensive (not by much) than the Impala and it was thought that since the Impala was a V6 instead of the CVPI's V8 and the vehicles smaller and lighter size that the Impala would be more fuel effecient. So the county commisioners decided they didn't want to give the sheriff the little bit of extra money for the Crown Vics and wanted him to get Impalas, so they only gave him enough money in the budget for Impalas.

The reality of it was that the Impalas didn't get any better gas mileage than the Crown Vic and it ended up being just a car that everyone hated. About two years ago the sheriff said that he wanted to start making the Crown Vic the regular patrol car again, but it never happened and now that Ford stopped making them it definetly isn't going to happen. Now we have a new sheriff so I'm curious to see what he starts buying with all these new police cars on the market, I'll take anything other than an Impala and I haven't been too impressed with those new Ford Interceptors either.

i hate the new back of the dodge chargers.

I love them.

Looks like the epic 1969 Dodge Charger (which is one of the best cars IMO) mixed with a '08 or earlier charger.

Processor: Intel i5-6600 @ 3.30GHz

I agree. The new Charger is refreshing, and looks great.

The front lights look great too.
