Is it possible to copy and paste your entire GTA to another system?

Featured Replies

As some of you may know, I made the mistake of ignorantly purchasing an Alienware gaming laptop. I've had nonstop countless problems with it, and I'm going to get a new system. It took me days to get my GTA 5 to a modded, stable state with everything needed to enjoy the game. I'd really hate to go through the entire process again. Is there anyway that you can take the entire GTA 5, and move it onto another system?

Do you have the steam version or the retail version? If you have steam, you could just copy and paste the whole directory (or just the modded files) and then verify the game files after. If you have retail, I have no clue

Hi

If you have steam and you have a legal copy of GTA V it should work fine, as long as you put it in exactly the folder that Steam expects. What you might have to do is start installing it through steam, then pause the installation and copy over your folder.

Of course you should be using a mods folder, in which case all you'd need to copy is the mods folder, and your scripts/plugins.

Should work just fine with Steam as long as you put it in the right folder structure, when my partner got GTA we didnt have the bandwidth to download the 60 gigs again so just copied it over the local network onto her laptop and it worked fine. You can even do it before installing via Steam - when you install steam will perform an additional "discovering existing files" step and build whatever cache it needs to know the files are installed properly or whatever. I also use OneDrive to sync my mods between my desktop and my alienware laptop so I can still game when in transit - I seem to be one of a rare breed that actually got a decent machine from alienware.

I don't think you can successfully copy literally the entire program and have it run correctly, since all programs in Windows have some sort of tie-in with the Windows Registry which is specific to your computer only, but core files such as the LSPDFR folders and their contents, RagePluginHook, your game saves, etc, I don't see why copying those wouldn't work.

I was having issues with the mod folder so I changed the actual files of the game. So do you think I'll have to download a fresh clean install of the game? I know GTA updated and Ragehook has to update and then individual scripts and mods have to update as well. Would that be a problem with a new install of GTA?

When you say the right folder structure, you mean the automatic folder structure that the game creates during installation? I haven't changed anything with my files other than the actual files itself when modifying content. So basically, copy all of my modded files, put them on the new system, then install GTA through steam?

Pretty much... though, I use a mods folder - if you dont, there's a good chance Steam will detect the modified files as being "corrupt" and re-download them. If it does that, you should then be able to copy your modified files back into the directory again - you'll then have all your modded files intact, and steam will have setup all the proper registry stuff.

Of course, this is all assuming your current modded install is the current game version. If you're still on a previous version for your modded install, I have no idea how steam will deal with that, you may need to install GTA fresh and re-apply the mods.

Damnit. I understand exactly what you're saying. To be honest the best option would probably be to suck it up and just reinstall everything. That would ensure the files aren't corrupt, broken, and that the mods all work the way that they should. The only reason why I'm trying to resist going that route is because, like you said, the different GTA versions in accordance with the Ragehook versions in accordance with even individual mods versions. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I may just install a fresh GTA and then move over my mods like you said. If we get into the details of getting the correct Ragehook version then the correct mod version then ensuring it works, then adjusting the settings within the ini of the mods, it just takes forever you know? Thanks for the help though, I'll try that first and see.
