Errors, a question and some suggestions

Featured Replies

The errors:

  • Got a PHP fatal error upon logging in;

Fatal error: Call to a member function fetchMemberData() on a non-object in *snip*/cops/forum/admin/sources/classes/class_localization.php on line 124

Tis a known InvisionPro error at that, I believe there's a fix in the IPBoard tracker on their site, assuming they didn't actually release it in a patch by now.

  • The gallery is a bit buggy (At least in Firefox 3.6.x), the images are going 'under' the footer, making many of them un-clickable.

  • The FAQ link leads back to the old 'xgweb.co.uk' URL

The Suggestions:

  • The links at the top of the main site page could use a different colour, they're fairly shaded similar to the background which may make it hard for some users.

  • The frequent AJAX calls under the statistics page seems a bit overkill/load heavy, stats definitely aren't changing that often, perhaps lower that rate and add a JS refresh link for it.

The question:

I don't suppose there's any plans to setup a First Response IRC channel somewhere (assuming there isn't one already). Shoutboxes are so dreadful : P

The IPB error is due to our single sign-on script doing things IPB doesn't like to do during sign-in. I guess we could use a location() header to reload the page after account creation, but meh.

Gallery problems are due to a new design.

FAQ will be fixed when I get home. Cheers for noticing.

Link colours will be changed soon enough.

The frequent AJAX calls aren't load heavy, as varnish redirects them to an event-driven JavaScript node.js server, which processes the requests in ~1ms.

We won't use IRC, because IRC is an outdated technology.

Well you didn't tell me much I didn't already know, simply pointing out 'issues' like it says to : P

The AJAX calls may not be that load heavy now, but they seem pointless to be that often at least, the page itself said to make suggestions about it as well.

As for IRC, over half a million people daily are logged across public IRC networks, it may be more than 20 years old but it's still stronger than any other chat protocol around really, not to mention easy to use across platforms and more so easier than forums to give people support in even (Tis why even modern games have IRC support channels, some even have IRC clients directly integrated into the games).

Based on what Asuna just said in a different forum, it might be a good idea to modify this forum to note it's the General suggestion location, as the impression it gives based on it's description is that it's simply for site related suggestions/issues. More so since it doesn't fall under the actual LCPD First Response category forum.

I never wanted to teach anything you already didn't know, I saw you were a software developer, so I didn't simplify it and just put it in development terms.

We wanted the Crime Statistics to be real-time. I guess we could use Comet or polling, but it seems unnecessary work.

With IRC, I don't think we'll be using it. The shoutbox, forums and commenting system suffice this community.

Just added a link to 'Suggestions' in the LCPD First Response category; thanks.

Or even reduce the setTimer to like 5-10 seconds, or even add on a toggle to enable 'Live stats' when a user wants them on, etc etc. (I always have a habit of thinking 'long term' in the event by any chance there would ever suddenly be a lot of users, lol.)

And alrighty, I'll just hope for an IRC channel some day, it's always more fun to talk with people lively and I'm a really old IRC lurker, lol : P

Thanks for the fixes.
