Jumping from a CH-47 Chinook

Featured Replies

I don't normally share stuff from my personal life on here but I thought some of you might enjoy this. Today I did my first static line jump from a CH-47 Chinook and I loved it; it is my new favorite aircraft to jump from now (UH-60 is my second favorite with the C-130 following close behind). This Chinook is brand new and was just delivered (I heard it had less than 50 hours on it) so we had the honor of being some of it's first passengers (if only for a few minutes). Unfortunately I do not have a GoPro (soon hopefully) to mount to myself while doing the jumps so the videos were shot from the assembly point on the drop zone with my Samsung Galaxy S5, so you'll have to excuse the awful quality of video. Video was shot at Malmsheim DZ in Malmsheim, Germany just west of Stuttgart. Our jump was from 1,500 feet using MC-6 parachutes. In the second video you can see guys walking out to the helicopter, those are the freefall guys going up to do their freefall jump from about 10,000 feet. I am trying to get manifested for another CH-47 jump next week so hopefully I will have more footage to share with you guys.

Enjoy.

Is that a HC Mk6 chinook? I saw two fly past my house the other day in Echelon R formation

This is the CH-47F Chinook. Not sure what the HC Mk6 is, sounds like an export UK variant.

The British use the UK variants, I'm not sure if anyone else does. I know a few other countries such as Spain also use Chinooks but I don't know what model exactly. I am in the US military though so we use our own models.

Wish I could get on a Chinook jump, I've heard it's the 8 seconds of freefall is what makes it the coolest jump. I had my first C-17 jump Tuesday in 1% lumination at night, and I got a static line injury from the guy in front of me and had a hard landing that messed up my leg. Probably going to miss a Blackhawk jump next week because of that.

Sticks and stones may break bones, but 5.56 fragments on impact.

I just love the sound of the chinny, fell in love with it in a corn field. lol as it flew over me, but the one i saw had red and white paint job, so I wounder what it was doing in NE Nebraska lol.

I did notice that I was falling a lot longer than I am used to. It felt like it took my chute forever to open, I think it was the first time I contemplated pulling my reserve but the I felt the opening shock and was relieved.

Haven't got to jump a C-17 yet, only C-130s, UH-60 Blackhawk, and the CH-47. Blackhawks were fun, didn't enjoy riding on the edge of the helicopter as much as I thought I would. I kept on worrying that I was going to fall out which is a weird concern for someone with a parachute on their back and is planning on jumping out anyway but I couldn't help it.

I was shitting my britches riding on the side of a Blackhawk. No parachute....

Although I remember snapping my ankle jumping out of the blackhawk at night after the pilot said we "touched down". The fucker was like 5 ft from the ground. Thankfully it was training.

Yeah the little "seat belt" they put across the door doesn't seem like it will do too much if you start falling out other than smack you in the face. The Blackhawk pilots liked to bank hard, not sure if they remembered we were back there or not. The ride didn't last too long though, probably about 3 minutes after taking off I was already scooching my ass out of the bird. The other big concern I had was the Blackhawk we were in had the pylons with fuel tanks attached on the side of the aircraft by the doors so I was worried about smacking my head on my way out. All in all it was actually a fun jump and I would do it again.

C-17s are fun and the extra room makes it so much nicer than a C-130. The only thing that can get people is the extra step going out the door. Also, being one of the last jumpers out the door makes it suck some because of people rushing it.

That does sound nice, the C-130 can get a little cramped. Haven't done a door jump since airborne school though, all of my jumps have been ramp (minus the Blackhawk obviously). Ramp is so much nicer.

I haven't done a ramp jump yet. 6 have been C-130 and my 7th was C-17

Ramp is the way to go! So smooth, don't get smacked by the rotor wash/jet blast, and no turning to go out the door, just walk straight off the back.
