GTA IV Randomly Crashes

Featured Replies

I have installed LCPDFR 1.1 for my GTA IV (STEAM) and I have been experiencing random crashes. It just says "Grand Theft Auto IV has stopped working" and I click "close program" and restart the game, I think these crashes are not related to LCPDFR in any way but if you think there is I will upload a picture of my log along with a list of my computer specs below.

(My Computer Specs)

OS- Windows 8.1

Processor- Intel Core i5-4460 CPU @ 3.20GHz 3.20GHz (Quad Core Processor)

Ram- 8GB

System Type- 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor

Graphics Card- Intel HD Graphics 4600 (Integrated/Built in)

Welcome to the wonderful world of GTA IV modding, where game crashes are more frequent than Roman's bowling invites...

Basic rule is more mods = more crashes, so apart from LCPDFR, do you have any other mods installed?

Yes, I have ELS 8.5, 2 Police car mods, Towing Script, and Breathalyzer Script.

Like SuperStumpje said, more mods more crashes. Regarding your system, my guess is that it runs out of video ram. An indication can be texture loss after playing awhile.

hello skavien :) everyone here is correct. the mod is unstable as all mods are. everyone crashes eventually. there are a few things you can do prolong game time. you can adjust your graphics ingame to lower settings. you can eliminate shadows, lower water texture setting, etc in order to free up some ram. also when you are using the tow script make sure you aren't over using it. only tow what you need to and leave those not blocking roads sit where they are. also keep an eye on the size of the files of the cars you install. make sure that when backup comes to arrest a criminal you allow that cruiser to drive off instead of abandoning it. if you do it right you can play for a couple hours but it takes alot of tweaking to achieve a good game. good luck and let us know if anything we suggested helped :D

Well I have very solid gameplay and I am able to play for an hour or two, but I do experience some sort of crash here and there. I am just trying to find a way to completely eliminate the crashing all together.

completely eliminate the crashing all together.

Are you perhaps new to GTA IV?

The game crashes frquently with NO mods installed, with mods, LCPDFR would be decades old by the time you get some very good stability.

Only thing that could help you is to get a dedicated graphics card...

Well, Looking from your log, LCPDFR runs fine.

With your 1GB of VRAM, I'd recommend you head to your ELS.ini and disable AI vehicles ELS lights, Once you get a dedicated GPU, you should turn it back on.

okay. so from what ive read.. more mods=more crashes. Im using the Austin Texas car pack.. how do i go about resetting those to the original GTA 4 police cars? because before i was able to do car chases, but ever since i got that car pack, it crashes if the chase takes too long. thanks for the help.

That kids, if why you back up fes, I mean come on!

I'd understand people wouldn't want to copy GTA V's 60GB.

GTA IV is a lot smaller, Be like me and have a backup somewhere.

Can't help you in the next 9 hours or so though...

You could try and find a internet backup of it...

I made the same mistake too when I replaced some car models, Luckily they original vehicles.img can be found on the internet

this is a problem with your vehicles polygon count! Please Refer to this table to find out if the vehicle is stable or not.

Polygon Count Table.

best to find some lower polygon vehicles. To find out the current polygon count on your vehicles it will be located in the top left corner when viewing a car in OPENIV

Thumbs up if this post has helped you
