SMAA in GTA V using ReShade + SweetFX 2.0 - a more performace-friendly alternative to MSAA

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

If you are suffering from performance problems due to MSAA (Multisampling AA), try SMAA (Subpixel Morphological AA). It's way more performance friendly and while it doesn't look as good, it's damn near close for almost no performance cost (only a bit higher than FXAA).

As SMAA is not included in the game, you have to use an injector. Please note that you are using it for your own risk, as Rockstar's stance on such programs is unknown at this moment - they might classify it as a hacking tool and ban you from Online in the future. Singleplayer should be fine. This method works with both NVIDIA and AMD cards.

To use SMAA, download ReShade + SweetFX 2.0 from http://reshade.me/ (click Download on the top bar) and put the ReShade64.dll from the archive to your GTA V folder (the one with GTAV.exe in it) then rename it to D3D11.dll. Then, download this and put all the files from the archive into your GTA V folder.

You should get a pop-up the first time you start the game, press ok. Then, in game, you should get a message that will go away after few seconds. To turn SMAA off and on (on by default), press F12. You can of course leave the MSAA or FXAA on, but it's kinda pointless, unless you want even better AA. It might be wonky though, I haven't tested it.

Also, you can opt to use SweetFX FXAA instead of GTA V FXAA. Simply go to the SweetFX folder in GTA V folder and open up SweetFX_settings.txt using Notepad or similar text editor. Instructions are inside. In my opinion, SweetFX FXAA works better. You can also use both SMAA and FXAA like me for even stronger AA - it's up to you.

The only downside is that menus, HUD and text gets anti-aliased as well, making it look a bit too smooth. Nothing major though.

On my i5-4690K 3.9 GHz; Asus Radeon R9 290, 4GB GDDR5; 8 GB 1333 MHz RAM and a SSD, I lost 1 - 2 FPS when compared to no AA at all (7 - 8 lost when using MSAA x2).

Here is a link to an Imgur album with different AA methods used: https://imgur.com/a/pbGXK

(the SMAA one shows both SMAA and SweetFX FXAA running. SMAA without FXAA is less blurry)

To remove the injector, simply delete the D3D11.dll file.

Cheers!

Yard1 gives a lot of quality advice and ideas.

I can't keep stable 60fps all the time,  but I'm also sticking to vanilla.

I sometimes want to turn off FXAA,  I'm usually not very observant on graphics once I really get into a fun game. But it is noticeable and big turn off in GTA V to me.

I have the GeForce GTX 570 1GB. I play at medium graphics settings, the game doesn't slows down. When put "texture quality" on high game starts to slow down. I want to get good quality with no lag. this mod will help me? or are there other ways?

No. This mod only provides you with an alternative to GTA's antialiasing (MSAA and FXAA settings). It won't change your performance in this case.

You are going to need a better video card to run higher texture settings as they need a lot of VRAM and 1 GB is simply not enough.

I have one problem. I followed all steps and when i open crash with message:
"GTA has stopped working"

Any way to solve?Thanks

Hey! Try rename file "D3D11.dll" to "dxgi.dll"

I  tried this and I had to reinstall GTA V. No big deal though, as my internet works quite well, but others may want to take caution. Then again, these mods barely ever works for me.

Invenio, Investigatio, Imperium

I cannot get it to work at all I extracted ReShade64.dll to the gta V steam folder as well as sweet fx and the game just ran as normal as if i hadn't done anyjing at all. I notices a folder in the gta v folder called "X64_dll's" and i tried extracting the same files there. Still nothing. i then tried renaming D3D11 to dxgi and still nothing. Did i miss something out?

Have you renamed the ReShade64.dll to D3D11.dll? Is the Sweet folder present in the game directory? Have you gotten a pop-up at the start of the game?

Hello, please could you help me? I did everything you told us to do. But when i start GTA 5 I see in the upper left corner something about Reshade and that it doesnt find an effect. So i cant bring it to work...

I can confirm that this DOES NOT work mate. I did everything according to the instructions and like Chrislord2, I get a message at the top left corner of my screen that says effect not found.

I renamed ReShade64.dll to D3D11.dd and then dxgi.dll and nothing changes.
