Justified use of deadly force?

Featured Replies

Also, we didn't see stuff from the officer's perspective. We really didn't see the suspect at all when the second group of shots was fired; we have no idea what he was doing. For all anyone watching the video knows, he was reaching for something in a pocket.

Going back to what maze said, you have to believe that youre life, the life of your fellow officer, or lives of civilians are in IMMINENT danger...

Totally justified, just because he fired 10 rounds doesnt mean that 10 rounds hit the suspect, Officers SHOOT TO STOP THE AGGRESSIVE ACTION, regardless of how many rounds they fire.

They DO NOT Shoot to kill...

The guy attempted to assault an officer when the tazer failed to affect when deployed second officer with the K-9 was the primary shooter and according to the continum of force was the correct responce. Officers dont have to answer sticks with sticks they one up to what ever options they have available in this case was to use lethal force

As a law enforcement officer myself, I tend to shy away from analyzing other officer's actions for the primary purpose that I was not in that situation and a video will never cover the entire totality of the situation. However, I will state that based strictly upon what I observed in the video the officers were justified and this was certainly a deadly force situation.

From what I can see, the taser deployment was too high (you cannot aim for the head) so my guess is that only one of the two probes hit the suspect. When only one probe hits, there is no exchange of electricity and therefore nothing will happen to the suspect. Electricity travels between the two probes, which is why it is important to aim for the middle of the back or the middle of the stomach for a proper spread of the probes. (The x26 taser conducts 50,000 volts of electricity and 1200 volts are transmitted through the body. Not a couple hundred as someone stated)

The officers who took his eyes off of the suspect clearly put himself in danger, but this does not excuse the actions of the suspect whatsoever. When his reactionary gap closed, it now became 100% justified for the officers to use deadly force. Once the first round of shots were fired, the suspect remained on his feet and was still moving away from the officers. It would be justified to continue firing rounds to put him down since him fleeing the officers could likely cause great bodily harm to other innocent civilians in his direction of travel. Another round of shots were fired, at which point the suspect dropped to the ground. The officers did not fire another shot once he was on the ground, since at that point they had stopped the threat.

The analysis on the video itself clearly shows the lack of knowledge by the creator. Holding a gun at a slant is the preferred method of fire when firing with one hand because it is easier and a more natural motion for the arm/hand. K9's will typically use this type of grip more often than others. Also, I will add that a gun shoots exactly where it is pointed so it doesn't matter whether the gun is perfectly level or at a slant. That bullet goes where the sights are aimed. In a situation such as this one, officers are utilizing a "point shooting" technique where you simply point the gun and shoot without taking the time to gain proper sight alignment. We're trained in this manner of shooting because you can't take a couple seconds to get a proper sight picture and sight alignment in a deadly force situation.

As for releasing the dog... there is absolutely no justification for releasing the dog in this scenario. It is very likely that the suspect would have seriously injured or killed that dog.

ATTENTION!

Laws in every state vary from what you can do or can't do. What it comes down to is if you are in fear for your life or the lives of others you are justified in stopping that threat up to and including deadly force. I always see youtube videos of police involved shootings with people bashing the cop and say how unjustified they were.

The reality of it all is that person obviously was scared or in fear of something to use a weapon to stop it. People have days, weeks, months, years, and forever to pick at all the details in the video while the person using a weapon in self defense has only mere seconds to make a decision.

I have never seen a video where I thought "OMG that officer basically murdered someone!!!!". The video the OP had I feel the officer was justified. The suspect had a weapon, was told multiple times off camera to cease his actions, and more on camera. Then he proceeded to threaten the officer who had the tazer. His partner who feared for his life fired at the suspect dropping him on the spot. Yes he had a dog he could have let go of but if the suspect would have attacked full on he could have seriously hurt the officer before even feeling the dog on his arm due to an andrenaline rush.

This scumbag got what he deserved. I feel bad for the officer who was put in this situation. For all of you who may not agree you need to pull your head out of that nice dark spot and see the light. COPS are the GOOD guys. The few who give other cops bad names are far and few between. You may not be greeted with a smile, handshake, or anything else because they have to do this job day in and day out seeing anything from people shot to teenagers who wrecked their cars killing their best friend.

So calm down a bit and the next time you or your friends are like "F the police man...F pigs!" just remember they are the ones who will still come out and save you.

I agree and understand everything in this post. Wish other people would understand this but unfortunately with anything specific the general public knows absolutely nothing.

He discharged the weapon cause he felt his life was in danger but however when the taser was deployed he should have released the K9

Why he was holding the weapon sideways I don't know all cops are taught how to hold their weapon properly to avoid misfire and casualties of civilians.

The K9 may have been injured or even killed.

Why he was holding the weapon sideways I don't know all cops are taught how to hold their weapon properly to avoid misfire and casualties of civilians.

Because thats the way K9 units are trained to hold their weapon whilst they have a dog with them. It's the most natural hold and it provides the most accuracy because it balances the pull of the dog.

... and if the dog bites the area between the two taser probes, you are likely to end up with a dead dog. Keep in mind that not only is a K9 your partner, but it is your dog who goes home to you and your family each night.

But alas, it is tough to debate these topics with people who have no true knowledge of law enforcement, LEO training, or tactics.

Why he was holding the weapon sideways I don't know all cops are taught how to hold their weapon properly to avoid misfire and casualties of civilians.

Which begs the question... What personal (verifiable) knowledge and experience do you have regarding LEO training?
