AMD or INTEL?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone today I am going to buy a new system and I'm stuck. I like Intel but a little on the pricey side. I'm tying to stick under $700. If I go with Intel i would go with an i5 and a decent mother board. I like AMD cause it's more economical but I heard that they run hot. Can a few people make me a few setups on here using AMD and Intel to run this game on max settings please I could use all the help today.

Thanks

I think an AMD 83x0 processor will fit for your budget. It will allow for more money towards the GPU and will probably be a lot more useful in the future (programs are already heading up to using 6 cores).

Do you need the operating system and monitor/keyboard/mouse, too?

If you don't need any of the above, this should do you well: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/9qznCJ

If you had about $100 to $150 more, you could go with an FX 8320 or upgrade the GPU to an R9 280X or even an R9 290.

Lol, this has nothing to do with GTA IV support.

But on topic, I prefer intel even though I have a AMD FX.

Well to the guys laughing I did not know where to put this topic, since you know so much tell me where to put it.

Now to the Ninja. Thanks for the info. I do not want to buy through part picker because I do not want to deal with shipping stuff back or anything to get replacements. I am going to Tiger Direct in my local area to set it up. I have to buy a keyboard and Mouse and also install the Windows operating system. I want Windows 7 Premium or Black edition. Will GTA IV work on windows 8.1? I bought GTA IV about 2 years ago and never used maybe less. DO I need to get an updated version or is that ok? I just dont want o run into issues especially if I get windows 8.1 installed.

Can you put a sytsem for me together. I will most likely go to AMD with the R9 280x or the 290

Thanks Ninja I just clicked on your link thanks. Ill look at it now. I thought it was just a regular link to look up parts. I appreciate it. Where am I suppossed to add this topic at?

On the Video cards on the R9 280x I have seen some bad reviews. Fill me in on this. As far as the make would you go with Radeon, Gigabyte, Sapphire or MSI?

I use Windows 8.1 (free upgrade from 8) and it works fine. It isn't worst or better than Windows 7 GTA IV. GTA IV doesn't need any special updates or anything, it will work as it does on Windows 7 (though you do need to manually download Windows Live if you use 8, not too hard).

This is the same build as above but an R9 280X instead of the GTX 960. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/bbQ799

The build is $775 before rebates, but after the *insane* amount of rebates, it is only $685.

Now about the different models. They all run at around the same performance, but the different companies (Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, etc.) usually change the cooler/case of the card (the part with the fans), and almost always do a factory overclock. What this means is that the card will get a little bit more performance than if you were to buy it straight from AMD. Popular brands are Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, and Sapphire (on AMD cards). I prefer Asus or MSI, as they both have very nice coolers and their cards don't run quite as hot as some others.

The 280x is not a bad card at all, it just isn't as efficient as some other cards.

Edit-added a few words to the Win 8/7 sentences.

Wasn't there a similar topic posted like, a few days ago?

EDIT: After a simple research, indeed there is: '?do=embed' frameborder='0' data-embedContent>>

To be honest, Intel procs are more powerful, BUT they are -a lot- more expensive. Like, a lot more. If you want to have an idea of how powerful each processor is, take a look at the benchmarks here: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

With the average price for each one of them. For example, I run an AMD FX-6300, which costs around $100. A similar Intel processor, the Intel Core i7 975, has the same performances, and yet costs around $500.

I find the Intel processors quite overrated overall.

Thanks guys, Im gonna stick with AMD for now. Intel will be a later project for me. I like the AMD FX-6300 but I would like to upgrade that to the FX-8000's series. Will that be a good choice? I see alot of people that play, have the GTX 750's and 760's they seem to love it. Will those play in HIGH SETTINGS or MEDIUM? I need good quality graphics or I wont be happy with results

The architectural design of Intel, especially i5's are perfect for gaming because Intel's design is to have fewer, but stronger cores around the 4 core mark where AMD is really into multicore support usually around the 8 core mark. Realistically, games don't use more than a couple cores anyways, so Intel really shines here.

Additionally, Intel is exclusively leading the charge with developing new technologies we'll all be using within 5, 10, or 20 years. They have a far vast, and superior company of engineers. It didn't used to be that way, but today they're one of the best tech companies out there, investing time and money into research that may not be profitable now or even ever, but somebody has to do it, and that's Intel. To me that means something. Intel is more than just a brand for me.

Yes, the FX 8000s are great. I would probably go for the FX 8320. The 8350 is just a more expensive, higher clocked CPU. You will be able to play on High settings.

Yeah, Intel is on the higher end here, but they're so expensive. If he had the money, I'd probably go Intel...(I was going to consult you on this, so thanks for posting here :P)

Oh woops, I thought he said he had $700 for a CPU and then wanted to get a cheap motherboard LOL. Yeah $700 for the entire system for AMD.

I'd say stick with AMD if you are just going for gaming + budget. I've had AMD for the longest time until around the ending of 2014 (Oct - Nov).

I bought an Asus Maximus VII Hero + i7 4790k for around $400. Surprisingly, the MB was more expensive lol.
I got it on a flash deal from NCIXUS

Anyways, AMD does run a little warmer due to the amount of power it likes to hog. Intel can be more power efficient and can produce less heat. At least from what I noticed.

Before I ran a Sabertooth 990FX r2 w/ AMD FX-6100 and saw that as more newer games were coming out it didn't have the "hmmph" like it use to, I was going to originally upgrade to an 8000 series but decided to take an Intel processor for a ride seeing as no one in my household ever owned an intel processor.

I would go for an AMD processor with a Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO if your worried about overheating. With your budget, you could go for an AMD FX6300, or if you have a bit more money go for an AMD FX8320. Intel have great processors but they are more expensive with less cores and clock speeds than AMD.

Correct me if i'm wrong, i'm quite new to this whole PC building world myself. :)

OK this is my final list for the build...Please let me know what you think. I went a little over and I still need to purchase Windows software and to get the computer built, so an extra for labor service. I did 2 builds. One with the AMD FX-6300 and the AMD FX-8320..only difference was $30.00...I think I will need a cpu cooler fan. What is a good recommended monitor for gaming? Do you guys use an Xbox controller or a PS3 controller and is it wired or do you have the wireless adapter?
