What CPU/Memory usage is ok for GTA IV?

Featured Replies

I'm running CryEnb V3, fully modded and got it to run in between 30-50 fps. On my second monitor, I have the task manager open to see how my computer is doing while I'm playing. My CPU usage peaked at around 47%, and my Memory usage remained at around 30%. Also, the back of my computer gets fairly warm when I'm playing. Is this normal? Should I be concerned about any of this? For reference, here are my computer specs:

Intel Core i7 4920k

16gb 1886mhz  of RAM

GTX 770 2gb

2TB HDD (the drive the game is installed on)

Thanks in advance everyone!

I'm sure that's fine.  However, you can make your game run faster if you use Large Address Aware, so all of your RAM can be used.  Also, a hot back of the case is not a good indicator of your computer, it's important to correctly determine the actual temperatures of the computer components themselves.  For example, 35 degrees celsius is within the operating temperature of your processor.  If your temperatures are high, such as ~55 degrees, you can try the following:

  • Increase fan speed or fan curve
  • Change CPU cooler
  • Route cables behind motherboard tray for more efficiant airflow
  • If your chassis has one, open the door for slightly more airflow

Download Speedfan (should be easy to find) and keep that on your second monitor as well, so you can monitor the temperatures. The CPU and RAM usage is fine at those percentages.

My response exactly, I always use speed fan on a semi-regular basis just to make sure that my temperatures aren't getting too high. It's the one issue I remember reading is common with this AMD chipset/Mother board i'm running.

Every set up has different max temperatures depending on hardware but it's generaly unacceptable to be getting near 70+ C, the lower the better. I generally aim to keep my rig under 50 while gaming.

GTA 4 should not be using a high amount of your memory as it's a 32 bit game and can only access a fraction of what your machine has installed. I don't even think newer games will use half of your available memory, but i'm not 100% certain on that. (Minecraft being an exception if you're running a server and what not.)

The two biggest things I've seen effect your computer's temperature is the state of your thermal compound, I've seen a bad paste make as much as 20c difference in temperatures.

The next thing is consider a bigger after market cooler if you don't already have one. A good cooler can go around $30-60, but it's money well spent if it keeps your temperatures from damaging your components.
