Technology: How Has it Impacted You?

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

Well once I again, I am asking for your opinion. This time, I need your opinion on technology. Friends and I are working on a project for College Algebra (yes, a project for College Algebra. Surprising I know). Our topic is on technology and how much it has changed in the past decade or so. From ebooks, to smartphones, to streaming services, and the cloud.

I want to know how technology has impacted you. I will use some responses for my project, as I did before for my “Educational Privilege” which received a 16/15 as a grade (A+) and can be viewed here: http://goo.gl/dH0KEB

P.S. Thank you very much for the help on my last project.

  • Does it make life easier for you? How?

  • How do you use technology on a daily basis?

  • Your opinion on schools using technology?

  • How schools in your area use technology.

Also please answer the following:

  • What do you own? Laptop, desktop, tablet, smartphone, E-reader?

  • What kind (Brand/Model/OS)? (Please do not start a brand/OS war)

  • Have you cut your cable/satellite provider for a streaming service like Netflix, Hulu, ect? Or do you still have a provider?

  • Do you still have a home phone? Or, if you do not, since when have you not had one?

  • Do you read books? If so, do you prefer paper/hardcopy or ebooks?

I doubt my 5AM response will help much, but hey, it's something.

Yes.

I don't read books often, but I prefer an actual copy of a book than a digital copy. There's something about holding it and flipping the pages, I'm sure many can relate.

Since you linked me to this, I feel compelled to contribute... Here goes: (In order of your questions)

  • Of course Technology makes life easier to me, from writing essays to do research it is all available at the press of a button.

  • I use Technology for school, mostly research. My current courses don't require as much essay writing etc. So I would mostly use it for researching and compiling reports on certain things, especially scientific aspects of school life. Apart from this, I use technology to interact with peers, to plan my day and most importantly, as a pass time. Modding and gaming etc.

  • Schools need to progress to technology. You are always preached to by schools to use less paper etc. to save the rainforests, and such. Ironically, schools use hundreds of books per year. Lets take an example, in the full Campus, we have 2,000 pupils, on average I would use 4 books per subject each year. I have 16 Subjects. This amounts to 64 books to year per pupil and 128,000 Books each year for the whole school. I don't know the figures, but I'm gonna go ahead and say that's quite a few trees... A lot of this wastage can be reduced by advancing with technology. For example, in most classes we use our laptops to take notes, but maybe we could progress this to using iPads (or other devices) to do our work and studies. So, in my opinion, schools need to use technology more...

  • The schools themselves, use technology to keep track of pupils, results, progress etc. Also, IT departments here all have Computers for the students, although most people use their own laptops.

  • Packard-Bell Custom Laptop, an iPad of some generation (Currently in 3 or 4 individual pieces), iPhone 4S (No need to upgrade when this does me fine), Kindle Fire HD.

  • Apple and Windows. I don't have anything against other OS's or Brands, but I've used this for so long and I know the ins and outs of the system, so changing at this point is a definite no for me.

  • I still have Sky (Satellite TV), but I don't use it often, just to record certain shows. I have netflix as well, but not enough time to watch anything...

  • Yeah, I still have a landline phone, simply because most companies have that number, (like the bank, credit car company etc.), so it wouldn't be worth the effort to get in contact with all of them to let them know about a number change.

  • Yes, I read a lot actually. Hardback, hardback, hardback... Simply because whilst taking an English Literature course, there is a lot of analysis of books and you constantly need to write on them, which is hard to so with an ebook. Also, I find ebooks, especiialy the Kindle Fire, hard on the eyes to read for a prolonged period of time. Whereas paper copies are fine for me.

I hope that answers your questions. If you have anything else to ask, just PM me on Skype.

  • Hello, I have not posted anything on any forums so I think I'll do this one. Lets get started:

Does it make life easier for you?

    -Yes it does

  • How do you use technology on a daily basis?

    -How do I not

  • Your opinion on schools using technology?

-Not my problem, let kids have technology in schools so they learn how to use it.

  • How schools in your area use technology.

-To be brutally honest they dont.

  • What do you own? Laptop, desktop, tablet, smartphone, E-reader?

    Desktop, laptop and smartphone

  • What kind (Brand/Model/OS)?

-Semi modded up Dell XPS 8700 needs some better parts but it runs pretty nice. And also I got windows 8.1.

  • Have you cut your cable/satellite provider for a streaming service like Netflix, Hulu, ect? Or do you still have a provider?

-No I don't watch netflix even though I have a subscription to it.

  • Do you still have a home phone? Or, if you do not, since when have you not had one?

    -Yes I do sadly

  • Do you read books? If so, do you prefer paper/hardcopy or ebooks?

    -People still read?

Does it make life easier for you?

Absolutely.

How do you use technology on a daily basis?

Chatting with people, Youtube, Adobe CS, and Tutorials.

It's worth noting that I spend most of my day at the computer.

Your opinion on schools using technology?

If it works, sure.

How schools in your area use technology.

iPads, Macs, PCs, Smartboards, etc.

What do you own? Laptop, desktop, tablet, smartphone, E-reader?

Laptop, and smartphone.

What kind (Brand/Model/OS)? (Please do not start a brand/OS war)

Some Acer laptop (nothing fancy), and a Galaxy S4.

Have you cut your cable/satellite provider for a streaming service like Netflix, Hulu, ect? Or do you still have a provider?

I don't watch much TV. I really only watch one show, but I can find it on Youtube.

We still have cable in the house because my parents can't wrap their heads around using the internet.

Do you still have a home phone? Or, if you do not, since when have you not had one?

Funny you asked this. Just the other day, we were talking about getting rid of it. Anybody who wants to speak to us probably has our cell number, and the home phone is ridden with telemarketers. We don't need it.

Do you read books? If so, do you prefer paper/hardcopy or ebooks?

I only read when the school tell me to read. It's just not something I do for fun. I haven't tried eBooks, but I like the idea. Reading on a screen is much easier for me.

Does it make life easier for you? How?

Yes and no. While having access to a lot of things through a simple clic or touchscreen, it also forces a kind of dependancy over time, and soon (if not already), we won't be able to live without it, while in the past our parents/grand-parents/elders were doing completely fine without.

How do you use technology on a daily basis?

Playing video games, watching videos, keeping track on the news and events through the world, talking with people on the other side of the globe in a snap, trying to find a job.

Your opinion on schools using technology?

It's good, even though I consider it should not induce the kids and students to be dependent to it. How many times we hear about kids just going on wikipedia to fill their researches instead of going to the local library and read books? I know right, reading books, to the newest generations it seems like it's the dinosaurs era. So yeah, it's good to have access to technology, but only if it doesn't make the users actually less apt to do some tasks.

How schools in your area use technology

Well around here we still have trouble introducing technology into schools, mostly because it's expensive and the government doesn't attribute that much money to the education system. Obviously there are computers and all, but often old ones running on Windows XP for most of them. Only in the universities it starts to get better, but only because universities have their own budget, and thus can invest into this kind of material.

What do you own? Laptop, desktop, tablet, smartphone, E-reader?

Laptop, desktop and smartphone.

What kind (Brand/Model/OS)? (Please do not start a brand/OS war)

Acer Aspire 7736G for my laptop, my desktop doesn't have any brand since it's self-made, both are running on Windows 7. Sony Xperia U for the smartphone, Android

Have you cut your cable/satellite provider for a streaming service like Netflix, Hulu, ect? Or do you still have a provider?

Still have satellite, even though I stopped watching TV a while ago.

Do you still have a home phone? Or, if you do not, since when have you not had one?

Yep, and I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. I like having my home phone. Dunno why, I just like it.

Do you read books? If so, do you prefer paper/hardcopy or ebooks?

I absolutely -hate- ebooks, for the simple reasons that it's a huge loss compared to a real book, and also because I find it very uncomfortable. Reading that much on a screen tire my eyes pretty quickly.

Does it make life easier for you?

100% easier.

How do you use technology on a daily basis?

Forums, Youtube, Chatting, Games, & Research/Study.

Your opinion on schools using technology?

Should be used more, while still be useful. Kids love technology, & it will only make studying more fun, instead of a "boring chore".

How schools in your area use technology.

PCs for learning Computer Science, that's it.

What do you own? Laptop, desktop, tablet, smartphone, E-reader?

Desktop, Laptop, & (a currently broken) smartphone

What kind (Brand/Model/OS)? (Please do not start a brand/OS war)

Acer Aspire Laptop, Custom Desktop, & a cheap-ass "intro to smartphones world" Intex smartphone.

Have you cut your cable/satellite provider for a streaming service like Netflix, Hulu, ect? Or do you still have a provider?

I've always had Cable. However, to catch-up on latest seasons, I use the (non-paid) internet services.

Do you still have a home phone? Or, if you do not, since when have you not had one?

Yes, I find it neccessary. Especially since calls from home phones to anywhere is unlimited ( "free" ) for just $90 a year.

Do you read books? If so, do you prefer paper/hardcopy or ebooks?

Yes, Paper always. I tried eBooks, but it didn't have the same ....... charm as a real, touchable book.
