Car Insurance Question

Featured Replies

I was wondering if any of you guys who have your driving licenses know if one car can be with 2 different companies. For example, if my mum has insurance on her car with Geico, can I get insurance on the same car with a different company? I am getting my full driving license soon and I'd like to know if this is possible for money reasons.

Thanks!

I don't understand why you would want to? I honestly don't know but just thinking about it I would say no on the grounds that its probably illegal. If you had it insured twice, you could make claims twice, use the first claim to fix it and pocket the second. What you can do is just have her add you on as the primary driver or a driver on the car. If your listed as the primary the price is going to skyrocket but there isn't anything you can do about that, one of the pleasures of being young. Also it depends on what kind of car it is, that will reflect the price as well.

Heres a example: for the sake of this example lets say you can insure a car through 2 companies. Your mom pays $300 every 6 months through her company and you might pay $1300 every 6 months through your company. Now if you go on the same plan she has it may only be $850 every 6 months. You then can pay her the difference, $550 every 6 months instead of the $1300. As I said before it all depends on what sort of car it is but even for a older car around $1000 isn't that far off for a new driver every 6 months. I'm just using the quote I got when I was 18. We pay every 6 months to our company but your plan may be different. I'm now 25 and I only pay about $225 every 6 months. It probably goes without saying but its VERY important to keep your driving record clean, tickets or accidents will only drive the price up even more

UPDATE: Just by the little bit of research I did, it seems you cannot insure a car twice especially in two different names

I'm not sure why you would need two insurance policies on one car unless you are conspiring to commit some kind of insurance fraud. The insurance is for the car and the people in the car, not you individually. So the car is insured and therefor anyone who drives the car is insured. Just use your mom's policy, if you are really itching to buy some insurance then offer to help your mom pay for the insurance she already has. All she has to do is add you onto that policy as a driver which might raise her rate a little but like I said, instead of buying another policy (which I don't think you can do) just offer to help your mom pay for the existing policy.

The main reason is because our policy would almost double, and that is quite expensive for me to pitch in. Mostly because my father has been involved in more than a few smashes in the past few years, although none of them were his fault, our insurance still rose, and with adding me as a new driver, it would be almost unaffordable. I have been driving since the day I turned 16, which was December of 2012, so once I turn 18, I will have been driving for 2 years, and in that time I haven't had any accidents or tickets, and neither has my mum. I've gotten a few quotes for her 2000 Subaru Outback, and it seems the lowest I can find is around $1100 every six months for just me. But I can't get the exact price for how much it will be if added to my parents policy.

Honestly your best bet and only option is to have them add you to their policy. Besides getting your own car, thats it. I don't see how it can be any more expensive to add you as a driver than to get your own policy. It should be cheaper to add you to theirs compared to your own policy. Granted their insurance is already high but all you would have to do is pay the difference. My example above still applies. Even if their insurance is $3000 every 6 and adding you takes it to $3500-$3700, thats still cheaper than the $1100 you were quoted on your own. If your some reason adding you takes there insurance up $1100 well then its a wash and you might as well just add yourself to theirs anyway since it really doesn't matter because it can't be insured twice so your independent quote doesn't hold any ground. So you have 2 options, get your own car or get yourself added to the plan.

Really? $1100 every 6 months doesn't sound that bad, when I insured my crown vic it was almost 2 grand.. that's just a little less then $140/month, now I pay $1500/ year with full coverage, they're going to rape you no matter where you go if you just got your license, it may seem like a lot, but it's really not, keep your driving record good & your premiums might go down.

The main reason $1100 is a lot to me is due to the fact that I have to work 2 jobs and I am still in high school, so I can't really get as many hours I would like to get so I can pay it myself. I have to see how much it is to just add me to their policy. Hopefully I can pay some towards it. Thanks for you opinions though!

$1100 wouldn't be paid all at once, your over thinking it.

Thinking your way, you are right, if it is $1100 every 6 months, the monthly installments aren't all that much, maybe a few hundred. I guess I was thinking that 6 months rolls around and you gotta puke up $1100.

That kind of cash you can budget, especially if your take home is at LEAST $1200/month, trust me it does sound like a lot of money, but some insurance companies only want a certain % of the final cost example:

my insurance was $2000.00/year, I put down 20% which came out to $260, then I paid $140/month, I have a PERFECT driving record in 7 years, my monthly cost of insurance is now $108.62, you can also enquire about different payment methods as well I'm to what best suits you & your budget.

In California you can have the registered owner and additional drivers with separate policies. Having a separate policy only covers the policy holder while driving the insured vehicle. So if you wanted to keep drivers separate to prevent the premiums from going up, yes you may do so.

Let it be known trying to 'double dip' a claim is insurance fraud.
