Need help choosing a Graphics Card!

Featured Replies

So I am looking at buying another graphics card to replace my old one, and I need some help deciding which one I should get for what I want to run. One of the 2 choices is a Nvidia Geforce GTX 760 2GB, which is what I am more tempted to buy at this moment in time, OR an AMD Radeon HD 7950 3GB, which I am wondering if it is a better buy. I am asking this question here because I wanted an opinion on which ones is better in general, but also more of how well they run GTA IV and with a high end ENB mod installed. My budget is about £150 - £200 ($250 - $335 for the people in US). I would really appreciate some opinions and facts about which card is better.

PC Specs:
AMD Bulldozer FX-8120 8 Core 3.1Ghz
Motherboard: ASUS M5A78L-M USB3
RAM: 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3
Graphics: Zotac Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 Ti AMP Edition 2GB
Memory: Western Digital 1TB Hard Drive
64GB Solid State Drive

Thanks!

yup

Both will run GTA IV on high settings with no issues at all.

The 760 is around £150-200 depending where you get it from and will last quite a while. The 7950 is a bit more expensive at around £250 but you'd probably get more out of it that the Nvidia 760.

Ultimately it will come down to your budget- both will run GTA fine though I believe the 7950 would be better for you.

Disclaimer- other people will know more than me!

The 7950 is a good choice because of the 3GB of VRAM, so it will do better in games requiring more VRAM or with multi-monitor setups. The thing about the 7950 is that it is a last gen GPU, so you may have to upgrade sooner. The 760 is also a great card, they make a 4GB version of the 760 if you need more VRAM. Here is a link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130949. I would go with the 760 4GB if budget allows because of the higher core clock speed. Benchmarks: http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-HD-7950-vs-GeForce-GTX-760 If you wanted to you could go with a R9 280x which is basically an upgraded 7950.

This is the way you should go skittlez.

It's in your budget, & the high 4 GB Memory will help in running high textured games (like IV on ENB with modded textures)

Quick update, its been a few weeks and i did decide to buy an MSI Gtx 760 4GB (Twin Frozr). It works amazing with every game i have on ultra settings, gta iv is still somewhat laggy with ENBs, but its better than what it was and gta iv isnt very well optimized for pc anyway :/ Thanks for your help :3

Don't forget to hit that "Like" button!

Also do that on aCoD Prodigy's post, since he originally suggested it :D

(& yeah, GTA:IV is horribly optimized on the PC)

GTA IV is a 32 bit programme which means it only ever gets a maximum of 4gb of your RAM- which is a big reason as to why it's so unstable.

I just noticed your location- Oxford, that's the same as me

If you plan on playing games other than GTA IV, then go for a bigger price. Considering GTA IV is in no way GPU intense, if you mostly play GTA IV a cheaper GPU will be the bigger bang for your buck. I imagine you would use an ENB in this case, if so remember to get decent cooling as ENB's can cause overheating with bad cooling; considering they can make the game very GPU intense. In the scenario that you play games like Arma 3, Watch Dogs, Battlefield, etc - Go with a better GPU. If I have mentioned anything already said, sorry because I didnt feel like reading the replies.

Recommended ENB(s):

CryENB

Side Note:

Dont be that guy that asks if a 500$ GPU can run Farmville on low settings with atleast 10 FPS.

Just because something costs more, doesn't mean it is better. The 760 I suggested will be perfectly fine for any of the current games.

Like I said, I didnt read all the replies, nor did I read any of them. Also your comment isn't relevant at all. As a side note, it was pretty clear I was generalizing costly GPU's better, as they are, unless you buy it from an unknown brand, company, or your just being ripped off.

How is it not relevant, when all I said was that just because something costs more doesn't mean it is better. Anyways, OP already has a new GPU.

After having this post up for a few weeks now, I did decide to get a 760 4gb, I am using it now and your right about the enbs somewhat. I do actually have Watch Dogs and Battlefield 4 and i can run them both at a around a stable 40 fps ultra settings. + I didnt really want to go any higher on my budget, although a gtx780 would be great for me.

Side Note:

If I brought a GTX Titan Z, could I run farmville on low settings with at least 1 fps? :P jks

That makes me skeptical on getting this MSI Overclocked 760

My one is the OverClocked Edition aswell, MSI's software can let you change fan speeds, temps and clock speeds so its pretty good. I would say for the price, this card is amazing. If you only want it for GTA though, I'd recommend something a little higher if you have the money. Other games though, like battlefield and watch dogs and Minecraft Shader mod, this card is amazing, it runs really well.
