    Next time while scaling an object down hold down shift. It scales in proportion :)

    Well, you have to select it and then Modify-Rotate, but make sure either the X or Y axis are chosen, so that it only rotates up and down or left and right.   Also, you could have just put the Valor

I agree, I suck at modeling. I am going to start over.

 

Use a simple lightbar. Don't use the valor if you're just beginning. If you wanna add me on skype @ Arapahoe2012 I can walk you though the basics.
