Steam OS available for download

Featured Replies

Meh. It's just Debian Wheezy with Steam for Linux pre-installed and the font-size set to "I forgot my brick thick glasses".

It does have the proprietary Nvidia drivers pre-installed, which will greatly help Linux newcomers. But for fuck's sake, Valve, if you won't let the user chose a language during easy install, at least let them chose a keyboard layout!

You are using the WRONG right theme!

Not interested, as discussed in an older topic about STEAM OS when it was announced. It's a slightly modified version of a pre-existing Linux OS, Debian, and it also has no support for any graphics solutions other than those from nVidia as it stands so a large amount of people who might want to use it simply can't until they add support for AMD and Intel solutions. Just another OS to code for and to get in the way of my PC gaming.

Completely true. If steam has enough support behind them though with this Steam OS (meaning large gaming companies at least) then amd and intel will catch on followed by nvidia. If this happens windows is going to have a serious run for its money, and it won't last very long. The only thing that is keeping linux back from choking windows to death is the application support. Many applications that use platforms such as directX are unable to run on a linux OS, mainly because windows are full of greedy little bastards lol.

They know as soon as similar or more applications become compatible with linux, windows is done for. You can customize your own version of linux and its MUCH less of a resource hog by far, also its smaller.

Personally I love linux, and plan to throw windows straight out once Linux has more compatible major game titles and business related applications that are similar to the ones on windows. >:D
