Question about the GTX660

Featured Replies

Hi, my question is, will the EVGA GeForce GTX660 (click for exact model) work with my current specs?

Specs:

CPU - Intel Code 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz

RAM - 8GB (2x 4GB)

MOBO - Asus P5G41T-M LX

PSU - 550W

(if it matters, Current GPU - nVidia GeForce 9600 512MB)

Also if I need to upgrade anything please could you leave suggestions to what I should upgrade to. Thanks in advance.

You may get some bottlenecking between your CPU and GPU. Bottlenecking is when the CPU cannot handle the GPU  (Video Card) which would restrict your GPU from reaching maximum performance.

Agreed. I used to have that exact same CPU a long time ago and it will definitely be a bottleneck. It won't kill your system by any means if you keep the CPU, but you won't be able to use the GPU to its full potential.

Any recommendations as to what I should upgrade to? My budget is quite low, so the cheaper the better I suppose

Same as above.

EDIT: I am thinking about buying this processor: (removed, as it's too expensive(Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650)), as it should be compliant with my motherboard according to the Asus website (http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5G41TM_LX/#overview)

I would recommend at least a quad core processor. The reason "recommend" is underlined is because it is not necessary to play the game, just optimal.

Your motherboard only supports LGA-775 sockets, which are rather old, so it will be hard to get a better CPU without having to upgrade the MOBO.

The socket type determines what CPUs will fit in your motherboard, so only CPUs with a Socket LGA-775 will work.

If your thinking about upgrading your graphics card on that computer, your better off upgrading the entire computer. Because you could buy the GTX 690 and you would still get the same frame rate.

Ditch what you have. Your motherboard, CPU and current GPU were top end back in 2007/2008. To give you perspective, that's when Age of Conan and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare were hot, new titles. As said by others, your other hardware is going to bottleneck your GPU, making it a waste of its potential and more importantly; your money. Also the 700 series is out now, likely with a new GeForce series on the way, since AMD released a new flagship video card.

The 700 series will no doubt be out of my budget. Here's a list I've compiled of a potential PC build, would you be able to give me some feedback on it?:

Total - £463.44

I'm willing to spend £500($808.70) on a new build. As far as I'm aware, all the components should work well with each other.

Thanks

Seems okay, CPU frequency is a little low by today's standards, and I've never heard of that particular CPU model, actually.
