From what I understand, Windows 8.1 won't force you to the Start Screen. There's probably more updates and other aesthetic changes.

There was no "force" before hand, you just had to click a simple tile. Now you have the option of booting straight to the classic desktop, but that doesn't mean the Start screen is gone from your life forever. You'll need to return to it for several reasons such as adjusting settings, viewing device properties or even basic searching unless you decide to waste a bunch of time creating shortcuts on the desktop for everything or using 3rd party mods. There are small aesthetic changes such as the re-introduction of a start button on the desktop, more ways to customize tiles, security improvements, universal search (searching on the start screen now pulls up results from both your PC and the web), new apps including an extremely useful one to teach folks how to use the OS, being able to display four apps at once on one screen, Skype and SkyDrive integration directly from a web browser, and more. You can view this list to find out about all the new features: http://www.extremetech.com/computing/159803-windows-8-1-a-complete-list-of-changes-and-new-features

Long story short: The changes made are for people who had minor gripes about the UI. Anyone who's already been using it happily will find very little to talk about here.

It felt forced to me, I know it's a simple switch. I'd understand the decision to boot to "Touch mode" if it had been a tablet. I don't see the need on a PC. But, I have to admit, you have managed to create a clean, good looking start screen. I'll definitely try and create something like it when I decide to upgrade. Btw, thanks for the link!

Invenio, Investigatio, Imperium

I use windows 7 64x on my desktop. I wont ever get win8 on here because I absolutely hate win8.

I do have win8 on my laptop because it was a new buy, I'm forced to cope with it but feels like its eating my soul when I'm on it.

Chances are when I next use my laptop I will get the 8.1 update purely because of the option to boot to the desktop by default, that way I can avoid the tile start menu as much as possible.

I really genuinely hate windows 8. For the same reason I hate the windows phone, that start menu is just horrible. In my opinion anyway.

There really is, like many have said, no need to upgrade windows 7 to 8. The only reason you would consider that idea is if you decided to melt your dekstop down and glue a touch screen monitor to your face.

Android for touch screens. 7 for PC's. That's how I think.

You have some very serious problems that you may want to speak to a doctor about if something bothers you that much, let alone an operating system UI.

I'm a computer scientist, if a UI bothers me it will bother me a lot.

I'd be concerned about more pressing issues. One that's bothering me now is that Windows 8 keeps resetting my "flex jack", the port in the back of my sound card that can be used as either an audio Line-In or a Microphone port. It resets it every time I rebooting, disabling my microphone. It took me a while to figure that one out. But it's pretty annoying. I might have to submit a support ticket eventually.
