Starwars: Battlefront III

MASSIVE TITLE TO EXPRESS MY EXCITEMENT

Smaller Italic subtitle to address the main discussion of this thread

I've been meaning to make this thread ever since the game was announced at E3 with the teaser trailer but I've only just found the time to get around to it. Anywho, without further ado;

STARWARS: BATTLEFRONT (3) IS FINALLY IN DEVELOPMENT!

I honestly jumped around the room a few times and cheered quite loudly when I saw the title splash onto my screen, the excitement quickly built as the teaser played and the snowspeeder slammed into the snow of what seems to be Hoth. This is something I, along with many others, have been waiting for since 2005 with constant bad news for this troubled franchise.

For those of you who played the original Battlefront games, you'll know how special these games were. Even if you didn't watch the films you'd seemingly spend hours having some of the best video game moments of your life. I was 10 years old when I finally got to play Battlefront II (That's EIGHT years ago!) and man did I love it, the large scale battles of the conquest game mode where large amounts of units went against eachother to capture key strategic areas of famous maps seen in the films. The campaign was relatively good too (remember, this was 2005) with some voice actors from the movies reprising their roles and narration being provided by the actual Bobba Fett.

Galatic Conquest was pretty awesome too. You fought against the enemy to control the galaxy by acquiring credits and spending them on new transport ships and starcruisers and attacking enemy-controlled planets.

The History of Battlefront III and its troubles

On September 29, 2006, despite being unannounced by LucasArts, Computer and Video Games made an unconfirmed claim that Free Radical Design was developing the third game in the Star Wars: Battlefront series, titled Star Wars: Battlefront III.[2][3] In June 2008, Kotaku allegedly received information from a former LucasArts employee that Star Wars: Battlefront III was in the creation process.[4] On October 2, Activision Blizzard filed a classification with the Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification listing Star Wars: Battlefront III for the Nintendo DS with a PG rating (E10+ equivalent) for mild animated violence.[5] However, that same month, Free Radical Design announced that they lost the rights to develop Star Wars: Battlefront III; the game at that point had been in development for two years.[6] Several years later, Free Radical Design co-founder Steve Ellis said Battlefront III was "pretty much done" in 2008, but that it was effectively canned when LucasArts could not commit to "spend big" on marketing it.[7] However, GameSpot quoted an unnamed LucasArts employee involved with the project who said Free Radical could not devote sufficient resources to the game and regularly missed deadlines.[8] A former Free Radical Design employee said some of the technology Free Radical developed for the game, specifically the contiguous game environment from planet surface into space, "is dying with us".[9]

During and after the game's development, screenshots and gameplay footage became accessible to the public. In December 2008, Star Wars character renders bearing a Battlefront III watermark surfaced from a laid-off Free Radical employee.[10] The following month, gameplay footage was leaked from a November 2008 Free Radical in-house showing of Battlefront III footage.[11] The footage was pulled from IGN after LucasArts demanded its removal.[12] On April 1, 2012, a user on the game journalist website Betagames discovered Star Wars models and textures buried in Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City's archives; PC Gamer's Tom Senior speculated that these could have been from Battlefront III.[13] Also in April 2012, Past to Present revealed pre-alpha footage of Free Radical Design's Battlefront III.[14]YouTube videos showing the game's rough state received media attention from outlets such as Joystiq,[15]Kotaku,[16] and Shacknews.[17]

Digital Trends speculated that Star Wars: First Assault might help LucasArts recover some of their previous investment in Battlefront III and other projects in the franchise.[18] However, shortly after LucasArts shut down, Kotaku reported that LucasArts had been developing Battlefront III internally under the code name "Version Two"

So, what now?

Now, fans of the franchise across the globe eagerly await more details from EA and DICE. A massive amount of pressure is upon these companies to not screw up the game and completely make a mess of it. Here's hoping they can deliver.

Final Thoughts

I'm sure there's some other fans of this fantastic game here (With over 80,000 members, there has to be). What are your thoughts on this recent announcement? What are your best memories of the series?

Sidenote: You can purchase Battlefront II on Steam for around £7 and the online is still very active!

I heard from somewhere (Can't remember where) that his game would be an expansion for a Battlefield game either the new one coming out or the one that is already out. I remember seeing beta footage of this game ages ago but then hearing they was not going to continue developing it. But i am pretty excited to hear they are going to continue making it :D

🕵️‍♂️ Always watching, always waiting.

Being a StarWars fan, I should be excited too.

But all that we saw was a bullshit teaser, and this is an EA game. EA. EA dude ! Worst company ever with Activision :D

And I have to add that a lot of SW games were really shitty, except of JediAcademy, Kotor, the elder BF, etc...

So, wait & see, but I'm not really confident for the moment. I hope that I'll be surprised (in the good way).

DW, the jaded gamer.

Wow, talk about amazing memories.

I believe it was on PS2 when I was really young just absolutely captivated by this series. Awesome to see it back especially with modern day cutting edge video games possibilities.

DICE is obviously the best in what they do. However, I hope EA doesn't some how fuck this game over. *cough* "Pre-order Star Wars: Battlefront to instantly receive access to so-and-so Expansion Pack the day the game is released!!!"
