How much can I overclock?

Featured Replies

You'd be surprised at what that can do sometimes. I remember Modern Warfare (the first one) giving me issues way back when. I installed/uninstalled it 3 times on my main HD. Nothing worked. Installed it to the D drive instead, and what do you know: worked fine.

  • Do you have the stock cooler or an aftermarket one? Each unlocked CPU from Intel is slightly different when it comes to voltage and heat tolerance, and they won't warranty them if you tamper with them

I reinstalled the game, installed patch 7, LCPDFR, a trainer, and a few other mods, but no car mods or ENBs. I now get 30-55 FPS, average is 39/40. The settings are set at all High (Not very high.)

Update: I just ran the game again, and to my surprise, I got FPS in the 70s  for a while, outside and driving a car and everything. I went to a shootout call, and called for backup which lowered my FPS into the 20s/30s, and it never went back up even after I drove away from the scene. I played for another 5 minutes and the FPS stayed low. I can play Battlefield 3 on Ultra settings and get nothing below 70 FPS with an average of 90. I know GTA IV is a crappy port, but there are lots of people on YouTube who play on Max Settings with solid FPS while recording. This is driving me crazy.

FPS is back in the 20s now. I can't get out of the 40s and the game keeps crashing. Please help!

I think I figured it out. Once I put the sliders down significantly, the FPS is now 70-90. I still have everything else on high. I feel like I shouldn't have to do that though.

Sliders down for what?

Sliders down for what?

View Distance, Detail Distance, Vehicle Density. Everything else is on high. With those sliders up high, the FPS is in the 30s. When I lower them to 20 or below, I get 60-90, usually 70-80 FPS. I feel like I should not have to do that though with my specs.

I'd agree, but at least it's playable. I can't use any modified vehicles or I get texture loss, no matter the settings.

Is there a solution to this? There are people on YouTube who can play with high quality and high FPS while recording with FRAPS with the same or lower specs.

FRAPS lag can be solved (mostly) by recording to another HDD, from what I understand although I've never tried it. I just turn off FSAA and FSAF on games like Battlefield 3, then I can record to my main drive at a playable frame rate. I actually switched from GTA IV to EFLC again the other day, and to my surprise, it works (kinda). I can play for longer periods of time without texture loss, and even drive between islands without it. I usually get it eventually, or sometimes crash during gameplay, but this is on a tester build of LCPDFR which most likely has something to do with some of the crashes, so I'm happier. GTA IV still leaves me wondering though.

4770k?

Haswells run hot and they have quite the build spread. There are some that run at 3.8 GHz with 1,2v and 80°C and others that run at 4,7 GHz below 1v and with 50°C. You really need to trial and error. I've got my i5 clocked at 4,4 GHz, which I find optimal, considering it takes me 1,181v for it to be primestable and the max temp does not exceed 70°C at any point. The furthest I've got was 4,7 GHz at 1,32v at 90°C with Prime95 - which I consider to be too hot and to be overvolting.

Important is a good cooling. If you have the boxed cooler, ditch that shit and buy a Thermalright Macho or similar.

I dunno about the 4770K, but you'd be surprised at how well the stock cooler works on the 3770K. I bought an aftermarket one anyway to knock it down a few more degrees Celcius, but a lot of OC tests done by review websites when the CPU came out were done with the stock cooler.

The good news is that my GTA IV problem seems to be gone. I put the sliders back up and I am still getting 60+ FPS on high settings. I really don't know why it started working.

On a side note, instead of making a new thread, I am having an odd problem with my PC that I could use some help with (This is the same PC.) I record videos on my PC (with FRAPS) and then I put the files on a USB 3.0 Drive, then put them on my Mac to edit. When the PC is copying the files to the hard drive, my USB mouse starts acting really weird. The cursor jumps around the screen kind of like when you have a low battery. (it's a wireless mouse) When the files are finished copying, the problem goes away. The mouse and drive are plugged into ports on my case, but the problem still happens with the mouse connected to the back.

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!

No idea on that one, man. I haven't touched a USB 3.0 device yet even though my machine has it, and I use a wired mouse. Just use Sony Vegas or something on your PC. lol
