fatfluffycat reacted to c13 in Mass Shooting in Jacksonville, Florida. This argument has been hashed out time, and time, and time again on here. I still haven't seen a shred of evidence that I'd be safer without my guns.
Crime rates in the US are dropping as well while thousands of guns are being purchased every day. This is with every single state allowing concealed carry permits for it's residents and many states having no requirement for a permit to carry.
The problem with arguments like yours is that it inherently assumes all people who have firearms are evil and looking to kill each other. If this was the case, then suburban and rural areas would be littered with bodies, as they have the highest firearm ownership rates.
You conveniently ignored the most damning part of my post, so I'll elaborate on it. After the "Assault Weapon" Ban of 1994, the Clinton administration, easily the most successful administration to wage war on the 2nd amendment, directed the Center for Disease Control to study the use of firearms in self defense cases. It's results completely contradicted what they were hoping for. The 10 year study, from 1994 to 2004, found firearms were used in self defense cases to prevent crimes between 800,000 to 2.5 million times. The reason why an exact number is so hard to find is because if a crime is prevented, then there is no reason for police to make a report on it.
The reason why people like me cling to our guns so feverishly is because they are a great equalizer. A favorite quote of mine is "God created man, Samuel Colt made them equal." An average woman would have no hope of fighting off an average male attempting to cause her harm. An elderly person would have no hope of fighting off an average male attempting to harm him or her. An average male would have no hope of fighting off multiple men attempting to harm him or his family.
A majority of gun crime is committed in low income areas in major cities, where gang life is the only way to make money. Those areas also have the strictest gun control laws. For a while, it was illegal to leave your house with a firearm in Chicago unless it was disassembled. Surprisingly, gangbangers didn't give a shit about it.
A majority of mass shootings, which make the news far more often than the 50+ people shot a week in Chicago, occur in gun free zones. In Nevada, it is illegal to bring a firearm into a hotel. That didn't stop Steven Paddock. It is illegal nationwide to bring a firearm into a school. That didn't stop Adam Lanza. James Holmes, the shooter who shot up a screening of The Dark Knight Rises, had multiple theaters with larger auditoriums closer to home than the one he chose. The one he went to was a gun free zone.
People that commit mass shootings are attempting to get the highest body count. They can't do that if some one shoots back at them because it brings them from offense to defense. Or it just kills them. In a vast majority of cases, attempted mass shooters either give up or kill themselves when confronted with some one with a gun, be it law enforcement or civilians.
Firearms are used for sport, hunting (unlike Germany, there is vast wilderness in the US with large predators), and most importantly, to protect the most inherent natural right, the one to self defense.

fatfluffycat reacted to Reddington in Texas school shootingLast time I checked, the US government was sitting in their rocking chair and gleefully watching as those with mental health are neglected.
Obviously, yes, we should treat others kindly, and most people do. However, this saying is as wrong as can be. You can treat 100 people kindly and still run into assholes who could care less about your feelings. I'm not saying people should be assholes to each other, but telling someone to treat another the way they want to be treated does not yield the results you desire, and could easily be a two way street.
You do realize this would only exaggerate the problem in the event of an emergency, right? Not to mention this is a huge violation of the fire code for a building like this. This would never work, and you know what? You help the shooter. He's guarding the only way in, and now has literally every single person in the building as a hostage. They may be able to break windows, but in situations like this, most people don't even consider that. Also consider this, say there's an active shooter. Everyone panics and begins running for the front door, the only door. The shooter knew this was the only door, and is standing and waiting with his gun pointed. What you're suggesting is a human meat grinder and would only help the perpetrator and harm everyone else.
I don't know if school resource officers are required by law or if it's a 'at the school's request' thing, so I'm going to base this response off both scenarios.
1) The officer is required at the school. You do understand that the SRO does a lot more than just stay at their desk and wait to be called, right? When I was in school, our SRO was actively walking around and keeping an eye on things when he had free time. You would be severely limiting his job if you required him to stand at the front door all day long.
2) Officers are not required to be at the school. This would mean one particular officer now has to spend his entire time just standing at the front of a school entrance. Is that something you'd happily do? Would you be happy that you went through the academy just to end up being an over priced security guard?
You and I grew up in very different places then. Our school doors were locked except for the main door, and people freely came in and out. There was a front door attendant/check in person, but it was lax.
I had to re-read this a few times to see if I read it right. Your answer to standing up to bullying is by having armed police everywhere? 'Cause that's how it is for a courthouse. Furthermore, the whole "just stand up to bullies" garbage doesn't work at all. More times than not, standing up to them gets you in trouble and makes them madder. I know this from personal experience. I was bullied a lot, told the teachers, tried to get things handled the right way and whadd'ya know? Nothing was done except a slap on the wrist. It is always chalked up as "kids being kids", and the adults don't seem to understand how bad it is, and that it goes far beyond kids being kids.
Anyone who ever says "just stand up to bullies", or anything that is deemed was minimizing the bullying, the bully, or the situation, either has never been bullied before, doesn't understand bullying, or was bullied but not to the same extent as others. I mean no offense by that, but speaking from my experience, minimizing the entire thing is just slapping the victim in the face and essentially saying "Grow the fuck up, it happens to everyone". That is wrong!
Do you know this for certain? Have you seen the future and know a mental health law would fail? As it is, there are thousands of those mentally ill that are homeless and on the street. Their family doesn't give a shit, the government doesn't give a shit. No one does, it's why they are homeless and regarded as "filth" by most. If we could get everyone on the same page, I believe we could actually help those that are mentally ill. I believe we could prevent a tragedy and help someone who needs it.
Thanks for your quote, but this isn't a movie, a show, a book, anything fake. This is real life, and that whole "evil to prevail" thing doesn't apply here. At all.
-
fatfluffycat reacted to DivineHustle in Texas school shootingDefinitely a tragedy. Maybe one day America will wake up and address the problems that our young adults are facing. Everyone always says, "Oh, they're just kids. They don't have any real struggles or issues going on." That's clearly not the case, and our young people are put into terrible circumstances in schools, then everyone's surprised when someone takes their own life or the life of someone else.

fatfluffycat reacted to Sam in LSPDFR 0.4 - The TechnologyThis is the third part of our LSPDFR 0.4 Preview Series. Not caught up yet? Check out the initial announcement here: https://www.lcpdfr.com/forums/topic/81745-lspdfr-04-announcement-first-preview
So, this article is a little bit different than most. Recently, a number of people have expressed an interest in hearing some more details about the technology behind LSPDFR 0.4, including some of the developments that we've made with respect to artificial intelligence in the mod and also perhaps some more information about the ways in which LSPDFR 0.4 can be customized through code. While exact details like this are a little difficult to provide as plans can, and often do, change - we've gathered together a number of new systems and features to present here which we think both developers and players alike will be looking forward to.
The Crime System
To start with, one of the new systems that we've introduced in LSPDFR 0.4 is the not-very-originally-named Crime System. The Crime System was originally developed as an expansion of what we had previously done in LCPDFR 1.0 where players could press ALT + E to 'call in' things that had happened, with the key example being a suspect taking off from a traffic stop - units wouldn't respond until it had been called in.
This is back in LSPDFR 0.4, but with a big twist. The Crime System recognises a number of different events which could take place in-game (called Crime Events), such as a person firing a weapon, a car being stolen or somebody being run over. Each time one of these things (and a couple of others) happens in-game, it's picked up by LSPDFR so that our systems can react to it. This gives us similar functionality to LCPDFR 1.0, where if you're attacked by a criminal then you're able to report this and the criminal will be targeted properly by other units, but it also opens up some new possibilities that we've added for LSPDFR, including the ability for nearby civilians to actually call 911 if they witness a crime.
The Crime System allows for far greater interaction with GTA V's rich environment, providing a more dynamic experience during patrols.
The cool thing about this is that since GTA V is a very rich game in terms of the ambient environment, it's actually quite possible that crimes like this can take place in the game and we think it makes things a whole lot more immersive when you can actually react to them with the full support of LSPDFR behind you, rather than having to engage in a mad dash after someone in the vain hope that you'll catch up before they turn a corner and disappear!
Plus, the Crime System will be available in the API for LSPDFR 0.4, easily allowing developers to add new Crime Events by specifying the crime, victim and suspect. This could be useful, for example, in a drunk driver callout where the player searches for the offending vehicle. Once they've found it, they'll be able to report this to dispatch and trigger a pursuit, without the need for any additional code - a lot more convenient than having to handle this manually.
Scenarios
Sticking with the topic of improvements to a lot of the technology that powers LSPDFR, we've added all new functionality throughout the mod for custom Scenarios. In general, we like to think of Scenarios as short ambient sequences which can just spontaneously happen within the world. In addition to this, though, we also support Scenarios across a couple of our other systems, like both pursuits and traffic stops. This opens up a bunch of new opportunities for gameplay as just like in real life, there's now so much more that could happen during a traffic stop. Perhaps they exit their vehicle while you're approaching? Do they have a weapon, or are they just angry and complaining?
From 'routine' traffic stops gone totally wrong to suspects ditching their cars and bailing, Scenarios add all new depth to LSPDFR.
The best bit about Scenarios, though, is that we've also added them to the LSPDFR 0.4 API, and while we've come up with a few of our own, we know that there's many developers who will knock it out of the park in their attempts to find new and interesting ways of enhancing the experience with Scenarios. Be it by creating new situations that can happen during traffic stops, devising new ways that pursuit suspects will attempt to elude officers, or even by taking advantage of some of the other additions to 0.4, like the Crime System for example, to add a bunch of new ambient crimes throughout the game, we think that the new Scenario system will add much more depth and variety to LSPDFR.
The scene after an escaped pursuit suspect's burned out vehicle was located.
Artificial Intelligence
Finally, in 0.4, we've re-worked a lot of our artificial intelligence. We'll be sharing more details about these improvements, particularly as it relates to the overhauled pursuit system, in the near future but for now here's a taste of things to come, with some technical explanation, from our very own @LMS
Stay tuned for more news about 0.4, coming soon.

Terrorist confused man knives down 3 people during a terror attack incident in the Netherlands
*Some pictures/videos may be considered disturbing for some people.*
Okay, so in The Netherlands we are somewhat "proud" that we didn't have any recent islam-related terror attack like Germany, Belgium and France had. All of them are somewhat neighbouring countries and have had to deal with major terror attacks. On the 5th of May we figured out why we have never had a terror attack -> MSM and police are rushing to call this an 'incident' instead of a terror attack, by a 'confused' person. Confused is now THE word-to-go to cover up terrorism.
Let me walk you guys through the case:
On the fifth of May a person started stabbing people randomly on a square in The Hague. There is currently no footage of that going down, but eyewithnesses say that he was specifically aiming to slit peoples throats. He was also heard saying "allahu akbar". The police response time was very quick (as you can expect in a big city). Within 3 minutes the first police officers arrived on scene. (Note how 1 officer "borrowed" a civillian bicycle, welcome to the Netherlands :D) See this video for what happened when the police arrived:
https://twitter.com/omroepwest/status/992787627148443653
Notice how the guy keeps saying "allahu akbar" after he got shot in the leg. Other angle can be watched here: https://www.dumpert.nl/mediabase/7423653/37e9ff5e/schietincident_den_haag.html
So the police arrived and starting shooting at his legs once he started walking towards the police officers. He still won't let go of the knive so the police decide to shoot some additional warning shots, which seem to have no effect on the suspect. The final arrest can be watched here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0UDLRsw794
So there are two notes that I want to make: First, the MSM and the police are so eager to defend islamic-based terrorism. They are spinning the whole story. This very clear picture of the suspect says a lot of what culture the suspect comes from: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DccGaWdX0AAbi8P.jpg. Trust me, nobody in The Netherlands wears a hat when it's 25 degrees celsius. Furthermore, the days after, additional information started to leak out. The guy appears to be a refugee from Syria. I think we can thank EU politicians for being so blind to the dangers that accepting everyone with no proper plan other than "Poor people, be welcome! Here, take this house that dutch people are for approximately 7 years on a waiting list for, take 10.000 euro's and we'll make sure you get all the benefits that hard-working dutch people get".
The other important note that I want to make is: AMERICANS, WATCH, LEARN! This guy got shot in the leg, something that is basically impossible when I have to believe you guys on this forum. The suspect was walking/running towards the police and it didn't turn in a massive shoot-out where 30 bullets are needed in order to kill a suspect (refferal to the Wendy's video that I lately saw on this forum). So is it possible to shoot someone in the leg when he comes at you with a knive? Apparently yeah, and he didn't even die from bullet fragmentations in his artery! And then they use a taser to finish this and arrest the suspect alive. This is how police work should be done.

There's been no confusion up to this point. We have always been talking about mass shooters. But since you lost that argument and want to change the subject, we are now talking about anyone who intends to cause harm to the innocent, physically or monetarily.
You don't know that a home invader is only there to rob stuff. Most likely, if they come at night, they expect people to be there, and are fully willing to commit violence.
If some one forcibly enters my home, they do not have good intentions. Your problem is that you assume everyone lives by the concepts of your imaginary world, and that no one wants to hurt you. They don't care about you buddy.
What many of you people refuse to understand is that not everyone is equal. An average career criminal has been in prison multiple times, fighting his whole life and leaves prison in amazing shape. An average male rarely works out. Then we talk about other potential victims- women, the elderly, children.
A majority of robbers work in teams, because it's hard to carry a TV out by yourself. So now we have multiple attackers in good shape against people already at a disadvantage in a one-on-one struggle for life. Being shot at scares the shit out of them and makes them run.
My state has a concept called Castle Law. Legally speaking, they recognize it is my natural right to kill anyone who forcibly enters my home, because some one who does that has no good intentions. I fully plan on exercising that right if I need to. And I live in the safest county in the state, so it's far from the wild west you imagine it to be.
God may have created man, but Samuel Colt made them equal.

Ya know, the most disgusting thing to me, about this event and others like it, is it's all about "duh ebil guhnz", but never about the one thing that would have actually prevented it: caring about and helping overcome the social, mental, and emotional issues suffered by the young man. People most likely knew this kid had issues his entire life, but no one cared. Society doesn't really give a shit about the issues of boys and men; usually they just kill themselves, but with enough untreated anger, hatred, resentment, and drive to "make people remember", these things happen.
Maybe once society starts caring for them, helps them work through the issues they face, stops laughing at them, berating them, and coming up with endless pejoratives for them, this trend might reverse.
-
Everyone here seems to point the finger on the guns. Yes they do need to be harder to access. But actually, what is the one thing common in all these shootings (except terrorrist related ones like San Bernandino and Orlando)? Mental health. The US needs to mainstream its mental health.
I would suggest that before any restrictions on guns are put into place, the US should have a federal based gun ownership system run by the ATF or DHS. Florida has some of the least tight gun laws where these mass shootings happen most.
I like guns, but when you've got shitty politics involved, it really makes me wonder: could we actually be safer by banning say an AR-15? The NRA is one of the biggest problems. Here in the UK we actually have an NRA (which is actually older) but a) no one has ever heard of it and b) it doesn't even have any political inflence.
I'm sick of these shootings and until something is done they will happen. I'm just glad the suspect was caught alive

-
At least in the city...on certain highways peds seem to floor it, but at the same time seem perfectly complacent doing 25mph and even waiting patiently behind slow trucks...
Worst was just now, when a suspect started a pursuit where he literally drove normally...stopped at all the lights, stop signs, and even my sirens. Yet he was in pursuit mode, and when I got out of the car they'd calmly drive away...
Not to mention that even when a pursuit goes well, never have they ever gotten out of the car and started shooting. They always just run. I don't want them to shoot everytime, but having that as a possibility would really mix things up...
Instead its just slow pursuit, they crash into something and hop out the car, tazer, done.

fatfluffycat reacted to t0y in Terror Emergency in Las Vegas, NVUpdate: 59 dead, 530 Injured. Apparently a lot of people were injured being hit by vehicles trying to flee the shooting. The gunfire audio is horrible to listen to, my thoughts and prayers go out to the people effected and the people of Las Vegas.
Anyway my thoughts on various things, we talked about it in school a bit but anyway first of all I think it is 100% a terror attack regardless of where he is from and his race etc. Domestic terror I guess would be a better term, honestly he is just a pussy. Hiding on the 32nd floor of a hotel room and firing upon innocent people, and then killing himself in the end not even giving the officers the satisfaction of ending his worthless life. Why couldn't he have killed himself before ending 59 other lives and ruining hundreds more. But anyway major props/respect goes out to the first responders and the officers who ran towards the gunfire helping out people, and I hope that makes people look better upon law enforcement. Still a major tragedy and yeah, that is what I think about it thanks good night. I guess this little paragraph was all over the place but yup.

fatfluffycat reacted to Sam in Terror Emergency in Las Vegas, NVI noticed that several people have been replying to this with their own takes on the suspect's motive and whether or not he's right wing, left wing, and generally trying to appropriate blame in a partisan manner (these posts have been removed).
I don't believe that in something like this it really matters if the person who pulls the trigger is right wing, left wing, or a chicken wing. It's simply reprehensible and it's something so tragic that surely people of all political philosophies should be able to come together in search of a solution, not politicking or blame.
In short, please don't reply to this thread with attempts to advance your own political agendas.

fatfluffycat reacted to Original Light in U.K. to Ban Petrol Vehicles by 2040The pollution coming from a few V8 engines on the road by 2050 will be so little, since there's going to be far less of them. It wouldn't even be a spec of dust to the earth. If 50% -70% of vehicles on the road by then are electric, pollution is already going to drastically be cut. Why do you care about what other people drive? Drive what makes YOU happy. Don't tell other people how to live their lives. The glass is always half full for environmental advocates. You can still have your cake, and eat it too. Compromise. Climate change is real, I'm not denying that. But we can still have our fun, too. By the way, it's mainly factories that produce the majority of our pollution. Not vehicles.
-
fatfluffycat reacted to Original Light in U.K. to Ban Petrol Vehicles by 2040I doubt something would work like this in the U.S. by 2040. The best selling vehicle is the Ford F150. SUV and Truck sales are at all time highs, small car sales are dwindling (including green cars and hybrids). Our government has to offer tax incentives in order for people to buy the cars.
Even then, I don't think older, classic vehicles will be outright "banned" as some people are worrying about in this topic. It only applies to brand new vehicles sold in the country. The government is not going to break into your garage and take away your 1968 Mustang.
Considering the average car is kept for 12 years, this means internal combustion engine vehicles will still be common until the 2050's. I'll be in my 50's by then. My grandchildren may not know what a V8 engine sounds like, but I'll sure as hell be enjoying mine.
Even as Cyan said, it's easy to promise something decades down the line. I'll also add that people get uneasy when the government starts throwing around the word "ban", especially when that comes to our personally owned property, like guns and vehicles. That doesn't sound very democratic. I sure hope these decisions are voted on by a majority.
-
fatfluffycat reacted to Reddington in Regular arming of UK policeGuns won't stop terror attacks. Having a gun doesn't mean you're psychic and know "he's going to do this!" ahead of time. I like how the UK police are currently. The reason all officers aren't armed is because their people are civilized. We, in the US, are not. If you sent cops out on patrol in the US without guns, you've given them a death sentence. Rarely ever is an officer going an entire shift without some type of call that requires the use of a gun, even if it's just to have the gun in your hand as a precaution.
UK and US society is vastly different. In one, you don't even consider the possibility of being ambushed because it's rare as hell. In the other, you practically send the entire force to assist an officer in the event officers are being set up.
[Edit]
Also consider this: UK police are trained a lot better in lieu of not being armed with a firearm. It is my assumption that they are trained in ways to deal with someone that does have a firearm, if the situation presents itself.

fatfluffycat reacted to Hystery in Airline Troubles9/10000 is already 9 too much. That number should be 0/10000, period. Saying that "companies overbook to make plane tickets cheaper" is just buying the lies they're telling people to justify their disgusting actions. As mentioned above, whether you show up or not, THE TICKET IS PAID. The company gets its money. The income for the company is the same, therefore the price of the plane tickets should be identical, since the situation is identical whether the passenger shows up or not. Better: if the passenger paid, but doesn't show up, the plane still takes off, with 1 less passenger, which means less food/drinks to distribute in the cabin, and less fuel used to fly the plane due to the weight difference, while still keeping the money of that missing passenger. So they even gain money from it, they don't lose any. Trying to double sell a seat is just being greedy, so they can have pretty numbers to show to the board of directors to make shareholders happy.
