I can only speak for my state, being Florida, but I'm sure other states are similar.  Here you need citizenship before you can become a police officer, as you will be taking an oath to support and defend our Constitution and there should be no foreign conflicts of interest in terms of allegiance.

For reference: you came here and asked me (the cop) a question.  I gave you an honest answer.  Here is a good way to not last a single day in law enforcement: ask a question, dislike the truthful answer, then tell everyone else why you are right instead.  I used cannabis for the last time over ten years before I dropped my first police application.  In your comment you stated " Can't wait until its legal nationwide and everyone can enjoy regardless of profession. But until then, whiskey will be my companion".  I can tell you right now that it does not matter where you live or if it is legal.  It is still against FEDERAL law, no matter where you live.  When you get sworn in as a police officer you are swearing to uphold state AND federal laws.  In addition, states with cannabis legalization have exemptions put in place specifically to not extend that privilege toward law enforcement for the reason I stated above.  If you want to be a cop then you should know you are seeking to enter probably the most conservative leaning profession in the United States.  The research is coming out of states where it has been legalized and there have been massive negative consequences because of it.  Since you are clearly an expert on the subject matter please advise me exactly what I stated that was non-factual.

Weirdest call was my second day on field training when I was right out of the academy.  I walked into a living room on a welfare check and there was 20 year old Indian guy, butt naked on the floor, covered in KY jelly, with his left fist completely inserted in his rectum screaming "come get me".

Weirdest item found would be a bed pan concealed down someones pants.

Those are great questions.  I will answer your questions in the order you asked them.  The first thing to remember with the detective position at almost all police departments is that it is a lateral promotion.  In other words, you must start your career as a road patrol or beat cop, working the street taking calls.  This is where you learn your investigative skills.  At my department as with most, detective is a permanent position.  At my agency now all of our detectives are "general assignment" meaning they could get anything from a burglary to a homicide assigned to them.  My previous police department, which was about twice the size, gave detective specific assignments, such as sex crimes, violent crimes, persons crimes and fraud.  If you become a detective you will be sent to advanced training in investigations and interviews.  In my area, we can go take the same classes you would need to be a detective so that we can start building our resume before we have to apply for an opening.

The jurisdiction question is great.  So yes, I work for an incorporated town within a county.  My police "powers" are in full effect within the town limits, but I technically have police authority in the entire state.  My agency has what are called MOU (memorandum's of understanding) with surrounding agencies.  This means that the jurisdictions we have an agreement with allow us to enforce state statute in their territory.  For instance, if I observe a traffic violation occur in my presence, but it is 100 yards away in the neighboring jurisdiction, the MOU allows me to drive over, pull the car over and lawfully write the citation without being legally challenged on my authority at that location.  I have written tickets and even made arrests in other jurisdictions, depending on the circumstances.  If I need to go arrest someone and it is more than a ten minute drive for me and my sergeant wont approve it, I have the local agency go pick the person up.  This is because as LEO's in Florida the law allows what is called "transference of probable cause".  This means I can call a cop anywhere in the state and tell them to go arrest a person in their jurisdiction, and they can do so based off my word alone that I have probable cause to arrest.

Hello everyone!  First off let me say that I decided to start this thread after getting PM'd by a couple people who know me.  For a little background; I started playing police mods back at the inception of LCPDFR for GTA IV.  On my profile you will see I have made some texture mods, which were orginally for my enjoyment until I released them.  I was in college back then and only had aspirations of getting into law enforcement.  Fast forward all of these years later and I am a full time police officer currently working in Florida.  I have worked for a large department in Broward County and I now work for a medium sized city in Palm Beach County.  I find that people are constantly interested in law enforcement information, but are either too embarrassed to ask questions or don't know where to turn.  I hope to turn this thread into something that LSPDFR members will utilize to reach out and ask any questions they want to be answered by me (or any active LEOs) on the forum.  For some reference I am currently on road patrol.  I have been an explorer post advisor, I am a DUI and narcotics specialist and I am also trained as a hostage negotiator.  Ask away!

Great question.  With my department, we are issued take home vehicles that are ours.  If you live in the Town, you can use them off duty to do personal errands, but you must have your radio and firearm with you.  Some smaller agencies do not issue take home cars and I know in California it is standard practice to check out a car once you clear roll call.  In Florida, most departments will issue you your own car after you clear field training.

    Hi,
Love the mod so far and really like the fact that it has so much potential for growth.  As opposed to LCPDFR, LSPDFR lets us play around with different agencies and their respective responsibilities.  I recently started enjoying doing some RP as a game warden.  This led me to offer the following suggestions:
-Make the ranger stations (there are two I believe) locations to go on duty and also allow these locations to have the jail feature for inmate drop off.
-When calling for local backup in one of the state parks make it so that the game wardens respond.
    - Eventually I would love to see a feature where if you stop someone inside the state park boundary you can check their hunting/fishing license in addition to their ID.  Not sure if this is possible but an idea that would be kind of cool.

    To the creators,
First off, let me say you have something incredible in LSPDFR.  I was one of the first players of LCPDFR when it came out and have been a follower ever since.  You guys have accomplished so much in such little time that I can't wait to see what the future brings.
Having said that, I would also like to make some suggestions for future releases that people like me would enjoy and were never implemented in LCPDFR.
I am currently in the police academy here in Florida and have grown up in a police family.  While I know many of us love the adrenaline of the car chases and shootouts, such events in real life are a very small percentage of what a police officer experiences.  In reality, police officers are social workers/secretaries with guns whose jobs are comprised of 99% paperwork and boring calls and 1% action/sheer terror.  I would like to see what I call "real police work" implemented.  such as the following:
    - ROUTINE calls for service
          - Welfare checks
         - NON Violent domestic disturbances
         - Alarm calls
         - Basic thefts (shoplifting, property theft, delayed theft reports for property and auto's)
    - Implement some sort of report writing system (not saying we actually write a report, but perhaps before a prisoner transport is complete you have to hit a hotkey to write a report on the incident)

I believe if you were to mix in some of these more basic calls for service, you would go a long way in appeasing the RP crowd like me. Keep up the great work.

Great work. This has by far added the most realism to those of us that want a truly RPG experience including the paper! Are there any plans to add a vehicle registration system? For instance when conducting a stop you can auto populate a plate number that will be attached to that vehicle so you can check its history ie stolen or not.

In addition, can you currently issue warrants from playing out a call? Let's say you go to a theft and the victim knows the suspect. Can you then issue a not in custody report to generate a warrant?

And lastly is there a predetermined amount of time a specific charge will keep someone in jail? I arrested someone today for suspended DL with knowledge, so are they out of the list of people to come in contact with until time has passed?

Really? What in international law disallows use of less-lethal force to control civil unrest? There's precious little in international law about what a sovereign state can do in relation to its own people (that's part of what it means to be sovereign). If you're going to say it constitutes crimes against humanity, I'd suggest you reread the definition of crimes against humanity (look at the ICC definition; it's the most recent, and though the ICC has no jurisdiction in the US [because the US hasn't consented to its jurisdiction, and isn't party to the treaty], it's still a decent definition of what the term would be considered to mean) and think hard about whether use of less-lethal force in a specific area in response to riots (or lethal force, when only used against people actively threatening lives, and if you think lethal force has been used indiscriminately I'm going to ask you for sources) in fact falls under the definition (particularly the part about "systematic or widespread").

I've solved my problem.  After a clean install it appears that you MUST use the scripthook, advancedhook, and dsound.dll included with ELSV8; the ones that come with LCPDFR are not compatible and will crash the game if used when ELS V8 is installed.

    Hello!
Im LOVING your callouts mod, but i have one issue. Each time i get to one of the added callouts, that specific mod gets shut down due to an error. I have no idea why its doing this, but it seems like when the crime is comitted, or when you get close enough, it crashes and goes down. Any help would be greatly appreciated, because to be fair i agree with McGillicuddyAP, this is one of the better API mods i've seen! :)

(For getting a better look at the specific error, i have only pasted this specific error below. If you need more of the log, go right ahead and tell me! This error seems to appear at all of the added callouts)

That's the great thing about the mod; it can be edited and altered to suit a variety of play types.  Personally I like realistic immersion as well as do a lot of my other buddies.  Obviously part of the role play experience is being vigilant and proactive, however this is also a frequent call that departments receive.  Honestly, nothing in this game can be too detailed for me because this is the closest thing to a police simulator on the market and that is exactly what I and others are looking for.  I actually de-activate callouts that seem too over the top (like large scale shootouts, very very unlikely in real life).  The fact is most of the players probably don't realize that most police work is 99% boring with 1% of sheer terror.  I try to emulate that.  It's not for everyone, but it's the way I like to play.  A report system could be included and if you don't like it then you should be able to deactivate that part of the mod.  Like I said, something for everyone....
