ELS questions - What sort of things should I be wary of in a first install?

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm finally getting ready to dip my toes in the world of ELS-V. I'm not a stranger to ELS - I've fiddled around with ELS-IV (GTA4), and even made the corona flashers video before you could switch them on the fly, but I've never touched ELS-V. Besides the obvious 'get vehicles equipped with ELS', what other things should I be aware of in the transition between ELS-IV and ELS-V?

Does ELS-V still destabilise the game as much as it did for IV, or is V's port stable enough for that?

Will ELS-V conflict with a custom carcols.yml (that adds headlight flashers to the vanilla cars, and makes all the siren_ lights have env lighting)?

Does ELS-V have ELS-IV's issues with the default binding for the info panel?

Does anyone know of a lore-friendly ELS pack or vehicles that they can recommend? I'm not looking for anything too flashy (hell, I was rocking Lundy's sheriff Esperanto when I last played), more utilitarian.

Edit: - Also, is it as easy as it was in ELS-IV to turn off ELS for a vehicle slot, if I don't have a replacement vehicle for it yet?

Thanks, and I apologise to the modstaff if this is in the wrong section.

Hey there

1) By 'destabilize', do you mean fps hits?  ELS has never tanked my fps or caused lag.  For people with lower end PCS, it might, I'm not too sure on that.

2) I know nothing about carcols, so I might be wrong here.  With ELS V, you're given XMLs for the ELS enabled cars.  Without them, the car's lights and sirens don't work right.  You can still turn on the siren via normal GTA's keybind, but the lights won't work.  The XML not only controls your siren and lights, but the environment lighting for the car.  The ELS INI also has global environment settings, but I don't think this matters for non ELS.  Basically, if it's an ELS enabled model, it has to have a VCF.

3) I never played IV on PC, so not sure what you mean by binding issue.  However, you can change the keybind in the INI since the default open key is CTRL P.

4)  ELS vanilla cars are kinda rare, at least on this site.  I went back 10 pages in the file list (searching ELS cars only) and this was the only pack I found.

5) Yes it is!   As I stated above, without an XML, the slot is back to using vanilla lights and siren control.

1.- GTA IV had a shoddy port, and if you combined that with ELS-IV, it was difficult to keep a decent set of mods on that wouldn't crash your game out. Have 1 too many ELS vehicles - crash. Have 1 too few ELS vehicles - crash. Have the perfect number of ELS vehicles, but an AI went 0.0001m/sec too fast - crash. Look at it funny - crash. I know GTA V's port is more robust, but does ELS still affect the stability much? Performance isn't much of an issue, my rig's mid-upper-end, but it's stability that's my main question.

2.- So ELS works in conjunction with the vanilla emergency lighting?

3.- The default bind in GTA IV was Ctrl-M, but the 'ctrl' bit was mapped as a generic 'ctrl key' rather than a specific one, which would cause the info panel's key combination to be unresponsive if you would go to open the panel. I found a workaround and still have that flowchart handy, but will I need it, or is GTA V's key detection good enough that it won't really be necessary?

4.- Ah, shame. I'll rock it for a while and see how well it suits me, but if push comes to shove, I can rock a Charger.

5.- Alright, that's good to know.

5.- Alright, that's good to know.

1) I've never had a crash resulting from ELS, and I have yet to encounter a limit for ELS cars.  I have multiple dlcpacks filled with add-on cars, all ELS, and all work fine.  The only crash that might be from ELS is if you install it incorrectly or make a mistake in the VCF.

2) Yes.  You can use ELS cars and non ELS cars at the same time without issue.  In addition, say you wanted a non ELS enabled car to use ELS's siren functionality.  If you change some settings in the VCF and give it to the non ELS enabled car, you can control the siren and lights with ELS's keybinds.  However, you will not have any other function.  You won't be able to change patterns, activate traffic advisor, cruise lights, etc.  Basically, for non ELS vehicles, ELS is a better Siren Mastery.

3) Right control is what it uses.  I don't know if it works for left control as well, I've never tried.  I changed the keybinding so that instead of CTRL P, it's CTRL U.  The 'control' key cannot be changed.

Uh, yeah, I wouldn’t use that. The pack in its current form is literally a steaming pile of dog poo. Floating dots, incorrect/missing LODs... I had fixed all of these problems and was going to update it, but I got demotivated after reading the comments of snowflake pervs complaining about the name of the FPIS-based vehicle.

If for some reason you want to use it I can send you the updated vehicle files if you’d like.

That'd be nice, if you could. I downloaded it and tinkered with it last night, and it suited me well enough. I only encountered major problems with one, but the others worked nicely.

If you have templates, would you mind sending those over as well?

I'm lore/vanilla crazy with included ELS Functionality. As red stated finding the cars can be an absolute pain, finding skins for them is another task. I've finally built a fleet that is both vanilla and lore friendly with skins. If you're interested in my set up feel free to shoot me a message and I'll show you what I've got. I've recently noticed a few skilled people diving back into the vanilla modding of vehicles which is really nice.

I would love to see this pack updated it is the one I currently use and I'm absolutely in love with it! 🙂

Ah, I don't mind making my own skins, personally; I have a weird thing with the department names where they're named after towns in Pokémon (dates back a ways) and I think I'm probably going to have a hard time finding skins with those on it. Plus, where's the fun in making the fleet yours if you don't have any part in assembling it other than choosing out cars?

(Yes, my favourite gifts are those that say "some assembly required". The only reason I don't touch zmodeller is the modelling community was - and to an extent, still is - surprisingly toxic.)

But if you do know of any more lore-friendly models, by all means! I'm running Lundy's Sheriff SUV/Esperanto plus a few other add-on odds and ends, but I'm always on the lookout for more ways to expand the fleet and add a bit of variety between the various departments.
