Ask a British Cop

Featured Replies

Hi,

I saw a similar thread here for an American officer. I am an officer here in the UK and am happy to answer any questions anyone has about how things work in British law enforcement (if anyone actually has any!).

Guess i'll start with the easy ones..
Which force are you in and whats the workload like there?

I don't particularly fancy saying which force, sorry! It's a mostly rural force, I am based in a city. The workload really varies. Some days you will have plenty of cops, not a 'lot' of jobs, etc., and some days you're having to send inspectors to response jobs.

What was your favourite reason for a case being declined by the CPS? I had an obstruction charge rejected recently because ''You might not have been real police''

You haven't been on since August, but in case you come back, what is it like not having guns as law enforcement?  Do you think it's a good thing, or would you rather be able to have them?  I'm curious on the British LEO perspective of this.

I need donations to help fund my food addiction. DM for details 😂

I'm happy to continue this as a volunteer police officer in the UK. We're known as Special Constables!

It's mostly about talking and calming situations down, for us as Specials we aren't issues tasers like our regular officers so it's prevalent that we can use our voice in order to deescalate situations. I don't think we should get guns, I feel that our officers trained specifically for the role are more than capable. We don't tend to have much gun crime here, yes you hear of the few that happens but mostly it's knife crime in the UK. I know some of our officers believe we should be armed but the few I talk to believe that we should continue with the tradition that we have in which we aren't armed by default.

So you must be equipped with a pistol at least?

No no, for me, my standard belt kit is a Baton, PAVA Spray and Handcuffs!

Sorry to jump in. I am not a police officer in the UK but certainly have been interested and considered joining in the past.

@IRONBLASTER Police in the United Kingdom do not carry firearms. The responsibility to carry firearms is upheld by specially trained firearms officers. Typical items that police officers use for self defence are just like Survivalmaster has listed.

@Survivalmaster Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Like I said, I have only ever shown and interest in joining so I'm am not completely clued up on this stuff, however I do like to do a bit of research now and again.
