  • Lengthy criminal background and driving this around.  I guess we know what he was planning to do.
  • Did the guy pay for all of this to be put on the car?   If so, why in the hell would you waste that money when you KNOW you're going to lose the car the second you're reported.
  • The lights are one thing, but a SIREN??  Most impersonators go with one or two dash lights, if not a roof bubble light. but this?  This is fully tricked out.

There's a username I haven't seen in a while. Welcome back.

This video is a couple years old but it's still hilarious. TBH I think the guy could have probably gotten away with it if he put a huge "NOT IN SERVICE" decal on the side of the car and say he only used it for car shows.

People drive fully marked (albeit vintage) police cars to car shows all the time around here.

The most expensive thing on his car is probably the two LED spotlights.  The pushbar can be bought used on ebay for pennies on the dollar, same with most used lights (I have tons), and the rest are el-cheapo chinese-made LED lights.

All things considered... I still dearly miss my old CVPI :(

There has to be some kind of historical explanation/reason for this....

My town (the all black car picture) did it to save money on decals and for better resale value. Their newer units are no longer all black, they started marking them again with the 2015 Ford Explorers. The 14's are still all black.

The State police do it (and they have been doing it since they were established) because the cars are take-home units, the light bars are magnetic and come off in 1 minute. The Troopers are allowed to use them off-duty, something that is unique to our state.

In fact a CT State Trooper was killed 2 days ago while driving their off duty cruiser:

Trying to think of how prohibiting people from purchasing lights and sirens would impede on any sort of liberties/freedoms. None come to mind at all.

But just because we say that something is illegal doesn't mean that people are going to oblige. I say leave it how it is and deal with it case by case. That's the easiest and more viable solution.

More like that's why it should be forbidden to sell sirens and emergency lights to civilians.

But then how would collectors like myself obtain them?  Also, from a technical standpoint, here in the U.S. there are many volunteer fire departments and volunteer EMS who, legally, are still considered civilians... how would they obtain the necessary equipment?

Maybe making it illegal will prompt some change in how we see volunteers.  I watch a Youtuber who is a volunteer first responder and it's sickening how NO ONE regards him as an emergency personnel who needs to get to the scene.  Volunteers may be volunteers, but they also can be a factor in life and death.  Volunteer or not, first responders should be regarded as actual first responders.

Unmarked cars a very useful. Traffic offenders do stuff infront of them because they don't notice them quickly. Also, they are essential for policing. Criminals can be easily observed without having a fleet of special cars for that. Also, just because that happened, we shouldn't ban unmarked police vehicles. In London a person made a real paramedic first response vehicle and got himself uniforms from multiple ambulance services. Just because of that we shouldn't ban first response vehicles.

I love CT troopers' vehicles, they look unique (that's way more important than having a 'kewl' livery for me), and, besides, I bet no one dares to speed there!

Well... Out here a mechanic can craft a light rack and a siren having plastic, paint, and required tools -- off the books of course. It won't sound just as right but general public doesn't really know the difference. Bottom line is that it's not that hard if one really wants this.

I think it's dumb to have all these visible lights, including a light bar, but no livery.  Unmarked-marked police car just seems weird.

Unfortunately, laws are different from one state to the next when it comes to emergency equipment on personal vehicles. Some are just courtesy lights while some require a constant audible noise while the vehicle is in motion. In my state of NJ, we're just a courtesy light. Chiefs and the next rank down from him can run red with sirens in their POV. As much as I would like to say that volunteers should have the option to run sirens in their personal vehicles, I am completely against it. I'd fear for the safety of the public since it only takes a few people to ruin it for everyone.
