Advice on sharing a 'stolen' template design

Featured Replies

Hi,

Let me explain my title before you jump to judgement. I love swapping up my templates from time to time (as most of us do I'm sure), and I came accross one by EP34FR (linked to below). If you look at the comments section you will see I have tried to contact them regards them creating new content with the same design. I also tried to private message them on 16 Nov. No reply to either.

I since copied this design and created templates for other vehicles in Capt14's pack for my own personal use as it is by far my favourite design. I only changed the font on the textures as I couldn't find the same one but basically everything else is the same. having done this I PM'd the designer asking if I could share them on here, giving them FULL credit, again - no reply.

I totally understand how much work goes into these designs, and how careful many designers are that their work is not ripped off. However I wonder in light of all I have said would the community think it ok to go ahead and post the templates I have made ensuring I fully credited the original designer? I do not want to do the wrong thing, and I certainly wouldn't take credit for his or her design, but I also think it may be good to share. Last think I want to do though is P off the original designer.

Advice is welcome.

You can create and privately use whatever textures you like, but as long as you can't get in touch with the author, I don't think you should distribute it, just to be on the safe side.

Customization is key to my gaming experience. I take pictures, do textures and lore-friendly vehicles.

Firstly I wasn't sure what section to post in, so thanks for moving it. Secondly, thanks for the advice - I will follow it until I hear from the original designer.

Personally I have to dissent; I wouldn't find it wrong to post it because if the original author has gone inactive I see no reason that they would be opposed to having their modifications further help the community, with full credit to them. Additionally, if they return and decide that they don't want their modified textures posted, you can remove the download. Lastly, they posted their design for others to use. If they did not want their design to be used, they likely would not have posted it as a public download. I would only see them being opposed to it if you didn't credit them, but you plan on crediting them regardless. I know I may not be the majority opinion, but I think those points are worth consideration regardless.
