Show me how you can turn off automatic updating. Show me the option, because I have multiple news articles that say otherwise.

A quick search on Google can give anyone the various ways to disable automatic updates on Windows 10. Like here, or here, or here, or there. It just requires 5 seconds typing and 5 minutes following the various tutorials blooming all over the internet. Really, people complaining about automatic updating are just following a common belief without checking for themselves if it's true or not.

As for trying to take control of people's computers, anything which forces someone to do something with no say in the matter (such as, say... restarting their computer for updates) is taking control of their computer, in itself. In addition, there was a big stink all over Reddit a month or two back when Microsoft changed Windows 10's sidegrade to download automatically if users hadn't changed the update settings, to the point where it pretty much was "half of everyone went to sleep one night with a Windows 7/8/8.1 computer and woke up with Windows 10".

In 6 months of using Windows, never my computer restarted by itself for updates. Like, never. I don't know what people are doing for it to happen, but it's certainly more of their fault and less of the OS fault. As for the cases of unwanted upgrade, well... it's not like no news feed mentioned it. Many people, journalists and experts called out that thing, that they should untick that update thingy on their Windows 7/8. If they didn't listen, inform themselves or just show some care, it's on them.

I don't mind calling out the bad things about Windows 10 when they are actually truly on the OS side, but if the supposed problems are just caused by the user, I find it a bit too much.

It was quite bad when it first came out, mostly cause there were barely any drivers ready for it. I rolled up to 10 around sept/oct last year, and haven't looked back. Granted I don't play every AAA g

  • Many optimizations were added to Windows 8 and 10 which are not available in 7, I think a few SSD tweaks and general speed improvements have been made since 7. Support for Windows 7 has been term

I don't understand why you wouldn't want the updates in the first place...many of them are just security fixes, and I've never had a problem with them...ever...on any version of Windows...despite some people saying how bad they can be. You can easily disable the automatic restarting, which isn't even an issue since it will only restart when you are not using the computer. I shut my computer down every night anyway, I don't understand why anyone would want to leave it running 24/7, that just leads to terrible performance.

Yes, they are trying to get everyone to use Windows 10 with the upgrade thing on Windows 7, because Windows 7 is outdated. As cyan said, 10 has many optimizations, and 7 is no longer supported.

The biggest issue for most of us here is probably that some older games might not work anymore. I know Fallout 3 didn't work for me, but I'm sure there's a fix out there (I didn't bother checking).

Aren't a bad price, consider the the cost of the Windows 7 when that came out. Also windows 10 is good. Been using it for 18 months now with the development os. Things have to end

I think the Windows 10 user interface is not for everyone, and there are still a lot of people who are more comfortable with the startmenu found in Windows 7 and Vista because they are more similar to the startmenu in XP and 98.

Some people also like the transparent design of Windows 7 and Vista instead of the flat design of Windows 10.

Unless they send me 3TiB+ of storage to back up my files so that I can do a CLEAN upgrade--because we all know what a mess every windows upgrade makes and how fast a clean install runs--then I won't be having the free upgrade and will not pay even the OEM price. Those of you who pay 4-9x as much per GB must be smiling.

Since I did not feel like being charged so much extra for Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate's worthless extra features (anyone of you actually use that crap?!), I would end up with the edition of 10 that's auto-update "service" is only disableable using a poor workaround (metered mode) or a dirty hack (disabling the Windows update service).

But why would I want to disable updates?! Maybe because I like to not be kicked from multiplayer games or have an important, very large download, from a server with no Range HTTP header support (can't resume interrupted download), interrupted because Windows can't stand not being the centre of attention for five min. Not to mention the people with stingy data caps. People in Australia, where the internet is the benchmark for slowness or in the US and UK where monopolistic ISPs drag their feet to provide anything over 10Mbit/s.

Before I get the usual response, other than the loss of frosted glass, I can stand the 10 UI. The phone applications crap can be uninstalled. UI wise, 7 > 10 > XP > Vista > 8.

Do you have Windows installed on the same hard drive as everything else? If so, then yes, doing a clean install would suck (and it is necessary when upgrading). But, if you have Windows installed on a separate drive from any games or important files, then a clean install is a non-issue. The only things you lose would be any programs installed on the Windows drive, and files can be easily backed up to another drive. It seems like if you have that much storage you should already have more than one drive.

The only time Windows installs/downloads any updates for me is when I first start the computer or when it hasn't been used for a long period of time. Again, just shutting your PC down every night, then letting Windows do its thing when you start it the next day tends to solve any issues with it wanting to install updates while you're doing things. I've never had to worry about a data cap, so I'm not sure how that works out with updates.

I guess being someone who actually knows how to maintain a computer with updates, etc. makes me an outlier here.

A lot more than 93.7GiB to keep from C:\. A lot of that stuff was going to be moved to BD-RWs but I never bought the writer/ The discs are also comparable to HDD £/GB.

I also do maintain my computer with updates.

My desktop has downloaded 811 updates between 28/05/2012 & today. 0.55/day, most of which threatened a reboot.

My laptop has downloaded 2041 updates between 28/01/2015 & today. 4.33/day. Only 33 required a reboot, none demanded one.

Guess what OS is the reboot nag.

Neither device becomes slow from weeks of uptime. The only time my desktop requires a reboot for performance is if a certain program has eaten all the RAM and forced everything into the pagefile. Something that would take hours to return to a reasonable state.

@sniper just get windows 10 on a shitbox and play around with it. I got a crap old computer for playing around with different OS. Even swapping around the drives :P

Suggested that you buy a storage docking station since you have no space left and maybe go though and clean it out.
