Will I be able to run GTA IV?

Recommended Posts

Hey there guys. I lost access to my last LCPDFR account and couldn't reset it (doesn't matter anyway), so I created a new one.

Anywho, on my birthday (November 30th) my new computer should arrive. I haven't ordered it yet as it is not completely final, but I want to make sure I can run GTA IV at great settings as I've never had a great experience with it as my computer sucks.

My most important specs will be:

  • Motherboard = MSI Z170
  • CPU = Intel i7 6700K
  • GPU = EVGA SC NVidia GTX 970
  • OS = Microsoft Windows 10 Home

Anyone have similar specs and know what good settings I can do, if I can install a good ENB, and what my framerate will be? I've seen online that because of it's VRAM being under 4GB (a marketing failure), that it has issues running some games. Will this be true for me? I can't afford a 980 in my build.

Also, is the processor/MB good?

Edit:

Wrong processor, I forgot. Changed.

GTA IV is shit, it is always shit, and adding more to the stockpile won't necessarily stop crashes etc... but if you are able to play it, that PC takes overkill and punches it in the face, which pretty much means you'll not be using that much power, even with ENBs.

So if you're saying I can play it without errors on startup (such as SecuLauncher which I always seem to get nowadays with my old PC idk why), I'll be able to play really good? It's just a single GPU, I thought I could only play Medium at 40FPS, I guess I can do more?

Waay more than that, and no, I'm not referring to Securom errors, I'm talking about the fact it crashes within about 5 minutes of gameplay, seriously, if your actually getting that rig and want to unleash it, get GTA V.

I haven't purchased GTA 5 yet and still like the way GTA 4 works better (somehow). I like the idea of patrolling in a New-York like environment and using cars that I personally think are more realistic and don't have overdrive on them all the time. I want to drive like a realistic person. Plus, GTA 4 has aged and it seems that almost every mod existant is out for it.

That sentence is not true, if you don't have GTA V, you can't compare it, if you don't like V's handling, there is always handling mods out.

It was an opinion. I just like the way it plays. I've seen hundreds and hundreds of playthroughs and LSPDFR playthroughs of how GTA V feels like.

Whatever you want to do, V does have native support for more vehicles, so really, in V, you could have INFINITY modded cars as well as graphic mods that make the game look real.

I thought GTA V already looked real.

Anyway, have an idea of what settings and what FPS I'll get on them with my rig plan?

Yes, that build will run GTA IV with ease. Is there a reason for the 6700k and Skylake architecture, though? You can probably save a bit and get an even better graphics card if you chose something cheaper.

With CryENB on GTA IV (ultra settings-4690k @ 4.6 and GTX 970) I got a constant 55FPS. On GTA V, I have it on High-Very High with an ENB, ReShade, and a few graphical mods and get 50-60FPS.

Wow, really? Can you provide a video and maybe a dxdiag or pcpartpicker list (something of the sort)? Helps me document my research for getting this PC.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/dkn3xr That is my current system. I can probably record a video with some gameplay on GTA V and GTA IV once I get it all reset (uninstalled after benchmarking with CryENB) if you'd like. Please note that I play on 1080p, so FPS will be lower if you play with higher resolutions.

One thing you could change in my build is the graphics card. I'm not sure how much of a budget you have, but a higher end graphics card would help even more. I would also recommend swapping the 970 for an MSI R9 390, which is in the same price bracket, as that has more VRAM (better FPS when using high textures/better FPS at higher resolutions), is generally cheaper, and sometimes does better than the 970, though it is about on par in most games and benchmarks.

Thanks!

Anyway I actually looked at a much cheaper solution I stumbledupon (don't even ask how I got this...)

I'm on my phone right now but got a similar solution with the two biggest changes being

The CPU is an i5 6600k

The GPU is a Gigabyte GTX 980

Will this processor affect my performance negatively? I know the graphics card is top of the line though.

This is 1080p gaming. I can't wait to build this and see what I can do. What an amazing price point at $1350

No, at this point in time GTA V/GTA IV/most games do not use Hyperthreading, which is the only real positive of i7's over i5's. A decent i5 will perform just as well (and sometimes even better) than i7's in most gaming. So, you will (or should) receive just as great performance with that i5 compared to the i7.

And the GTX 980? What crazy things can I do? Like since I'm only at 1080p, could I do Very High on all the settings, and even max cryenb?

Maybe even other high ENB settings?

Even recording with good framerate?

My 970's frames remain the same when recording with Shadowplay, that will not differ with the 980. The 980 should perform the same with slightly raised settings and a more resource needy ENB. The 980 will receive slightly better performance on GTA IV with CryENB compared to the 970, but it is GTA IV, don't expect 2 trillion FPS. You'll need a few 980 Ti's for that.

What do you think I'll get on GTA 5, considering it's more optimized for higher-end cards?

Well, I'm not sure, to be quite honest. You'll definitely get more than me on the same settings. Maybe on Ultra you'll get about the same FPS that I do, around 60. If you disable Vsync (I have mine enabled), then you will receive more FPS than 60 as well.

Ultra ABOVE 60 FPS? Holy crap!

And you're sure this CPU will do fine?
