Should Profanity be Prohibited on the Forum?

Featured Replies

It can't be easily enforced - at least not through software. There's so many ways of getting past word filters. (have a look at club penguin trolling videos for some great examples)

Also, software efforts result in the Scunthorpe problem, where perfectly legitimate words are blocked for containing profanity as substrings.

Fuck yea profanity is fine in the forums! As long as it's not too racist(some racism is fun for the whole family ;) and isn't excessive

I think it's fine as long as it's not used excessively or in direct insult to anyone. I mean, this is a website built around modification for an M rated game(s) where cursing is like a primary languag

Agree with Crossfire, iansonwheels, and Lund!

While I think prohibiting profanity is a bad idea, that is completely untrue. You can very easily distinguish between a word being alone (such as nip) and a word being part of another (sniper). You're probably wondering why I'm using the word "sniper". I'm using it because it's actually a censored word in GTA online because it contains the letters "nip"...

GTA Online is a prime example of what not to do in profanity filters. Differentiating between a sequence of letters being alone by itself and a sequence of letters being part of another sequence of letters is not some new age technology. You've missed a key sentence in that article.

While computers can easily identify strings of text within a document, broad blocking rules may result in false positives, causing innocent phrases to be blocked.

It doesn't matter if people try to get around the word filter. Most people, if they see that profanity is blocked, will either not try to circumvent it, or just remove the profanity.

...Profane usernames... that's another story entirely.

My personal inbox is not the support forum. I don't mind helping  you with your issues, but you are responsible for your research.  I am not a page in a manual, Google, or the forum search function - look through all three before asking.
A link to a handy how-to guide for getting useful solutions to your problems, and useful answers to your questions. A lot of it may seem irrelevant, but it outlines some great practices to use when seeking answers or solutions.

Sorry, but that just makes filters incredibly monkeyfucking easy to get around.

another one of those threads ....if you don't like cuss words then mabe you shouldnt play m rated games and your parents should do a better job at parenting

I see nothing wrong with having a community discussion on something like this. If you have a problem with participating in the discussion, then the solution is simple. Get out. If you'd like to participate, then by all means I'd love to hear your view on the topic.

That's not the point. This website services many people, not everyone is 18 years old and not everyone are fine with cursing. LCPDFR.com does not carry any sort of age-rating like the GTA games do.

When members post a topic to discuss the rules, we won't close it. we encourage it. If you have nothing of value to add, you need not post. If you feel a topic does not belong, you can use the report button.

dude...its just common sense, an m rated game that involves a lot more then just cuss words shouldn't be any restriction on a site regarding that and I gave my thought so I don't see the point in starting this thread

Read what ineseri just said.

Obviously if someone is trying to get around a word filter, they are doing so out of malice and should be punished. How easy it is to bypass is irrelevant, when the point is to prevent and let the user know that profanity isn't allowed. A profanity filter isn't intended to be perfect.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nirvana_fallacy

The nirvana fallacy is a name given to the informal fallacy of comparing actual things with unrealistic, idealized alternatives. It can also refer to the tendency to assume that there is a perfect solution to a particular problem.

The perfect solution fallacy is a related informal fallacy that occurs when an argument assumes that a perfect solution exists and/or that a solution should be rejected because some part of the problem would still exist after it were implemented.

I urge you to look at the examples on that page because the logic you're using is very similar.

Except not even remotely. A largely-ineffective system is not, in fact, necessarily better than nothing. "This isn't perfect, so let's not do it" isn't a valid argument, but neither is "'this isn't perfect, so let's not do it' isn't a valid argument, therefore something not doing much to solve a problem doesn't mean we shouldn't implement it." It is absolutely a valid argument to say "this doesn't help much, so we shouldn't bother to implement it." In actual fact, a profanity filter provides very little regulation of language if it lets you get around it by simply adding a letter before or after; if we want to tell people profanity isn't allowed, we can do that by actually telling them it isn't allowed and enforcing profanity rules.

It makes much more sense to say that it wouldn't be worth implementing it (for resources and energy's sake, compared to the gain), but originally the only thing you said would that it's easy to get around.

It's actually very easy to enforce. Every other forum that has the word filter doesn't have any visible problems, from a forum user perspective, with the word filtering. As Arse said, how easy it is to bypass the filter isn't very relevant in my opinion. If they're trying to bypass the filter, then they know that they're breaking the rules and should be punished regardless. Just witnessed a small situation on the forum of a user going to every topic and typing in curse words. All of the curse words were censored to silly words relevant to the game, and the users account is currently suspended.
