Petition To Let Staff Members Edit Other User's Posts

Featured Replies

Ok, so let me explain. I was having a formal argument with ineseri (ineseri is the Assistant Community Manager in case you didn't know). I won't go into details, but we discussed different ways of staff members handling posts. I offered the idea of editing user's posts, and here was the response:

Indeed, but it is not our place to edit posts. That'd be a way too big of an operation to handle. It's just not the way we do things here.

I think editing user's posts is the best way to handle some situations. For example, if a user has made a post that doesn't make sense but a staff member can understand it then they should edit it so everyone else can understand it. I think that the staff should be allowed to edit other's posts, and if you agree with me then please sign the petition here: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/lcpdfr-website-allow-staff-to-edit-forum-posts or use the widget below (Widget isn't working, apologies)

Maybe I was a bit unclear, so I will just clarify it here: We edit members post if they are in violation of the community guidelines. We edit them to remove content (like advertising or excessive swearing) not add content, or be "grammar patrol". As I said before, I don't believe it is our place to correct members way of typing, regardless if people can't read it. In most case if a post like that appears, we (the community team) can inform the user via PM or in the thread that the post is hard to read and that it should be corrected, or a new post made explaining what the user was saying.

As a side note; HTML is disabled, so your widget will not work. A simple forum poll would have been easier.

Invenio, Investigatio, Imperium

As ineseri says, it isn't really our place to be editing people's posts like that.  There could easily be situations where the wrong meaning was taken from posts and carried through into edits.

I think a better solution is just to reply asking if they mean what you think they mean.

What you are saying contradicts what you said in our PM's. That post I was talking about in our PM's violates the rules, yet you didn't edit it. We can discuss more via PM's if you'd like

P.S. Fixed my widget... Sort of. By the way, can't do polls for some reason

I think this is a bad idea. This pretty much would mean that the staff would have control over what you say. Even if it was allowed, I know the team wouldn't abuse it.

I didn't mean that the staff can just edit anybody's post, I meant they should be allowed to edit posts if rules are broken. I think me and ineseri had a misunderstanding in our PM's leading to me thinking that staff don't edit posts if rules are broken. It may be best to have this topic removed or closed

Staff are allowed to edit posts to remove any material which breaks the rules.  Generally, this is the only time that editing posts happens.
