Hong Kong & Democracy

Featured Replies

Not sure if you guys notice, but there are large scale protests in Hong Kong lately. They are all related to democracy and real universal suffrages (without China controlling in the back). The protesters blocked highways and main roads in some main areas of HK, but the protests have been really peaceful, and there were absolutely NO rioting, arson... basically without ANY violence. However, the police responded the crowd with brutality, and attempted to disperse unarmed and defenseless citizens with tear gas and pepper sprays. This caused even more citizens to come out and take the streets of Hong Kong. Now, the police has withdrew all riot officers to attempt to save its own reputation.

I am just wondering what you guys think about this entire thing.

Just so you guys know, Hong Kong was once a British colony, and is why it has been so successful in terms of economy and democracy. 17 years ago, it was handed back to China, but China promised us that things will not change for 50 years (till 2047). The problem is, the Chinese government has been extremely sly, and is completely impossible for us Hong Kongers to trust it. They are now "giving" us a universal suffrage, but the candidates are all chosen by Beijing...which I assume you guys know what's gonna happen.

Crazy HKPD using pepper spray & tear gas

You call that crazy? In 1989 on  Tiananmen Square up to a thousand peaceful protesters were murdered by the PLO army. That's crazy.

I knew some people from Hong Kong, they were always saying "HK is not China". I wonder if it will be possible for the UK to join Hong Kong back :3

Of course, it is not China. Hong Kong has every right to be free. China is always taking up others' territories and stirring trouble. Hong Kong, Tibet, Chumar, Senkaku islands and a major chunk of South China sea waters to name a few.

And by :" I wonder if it will be possible for the UK to join Hong Kong back :3", if you mean whether it is possible for UK to join Hong Kong back into China, how about going back to USSR days, then, Hastings?

Well, we already having our little soviet order back here, with censorship and political police and invasions into neighbor countries. For me, Red is and always will be an evil, and being a part of the UK is much better for me that being a part of some red monster.

And I wasn't proposing any invasions by Britain either, just thinking whether Hong Kong would prefer joining them. On the other hand, if it wasn't for Britain, China would have assimilated Hong Kong right after the Handover and it would become just another part of this country.

I understand that the Tiananmen one was WAY worse than this. However, you also have to understand that this is happening in Hong Kong 20 something years later. Hong Kong is supposed to be a democratic world with a democratic government (even China promised that), instead of a barbaric one like the Chinese.

Also, the protesters were being extremely peaceful and NOT causing ANY issues at all. Why use pepper spray and tear gas on the unarmed, defenseless and innocent people? (even though some people say that the NYPD is even worse...no comment)

And yes, Hong Kong is legally part of China, but it is not China. It might sound contradicting, but it is the truth.

*Hopefully I do not sound too emotional. It is my hometown, and therefore I feel that I have the obligation to defend it, just like the Ukrainians and any other people in western countries.

*btw it was the PLA army (no offense, just sayin) back in 1989.

So, how do you evaluate your chances? From what I've read about China government, they never surrender easily.

Well, for starters, UK was the one to sell (not really) HK to China (and formerly Japan). I'm in no way interested in HK's inner politics as its always been a clusterfuck to me. However, the fact that its an Alpha+ city makes it a hot topic in world media.

Well this will be interesting to see how the UK Government reacts to this. Honestly I can't see our current coalition defending the agreement signed by the the UK and China to keep Hong Kong's democratic society because of plans with the high speed 2 railway being part funded and built buy China, the Conservatives wouldn't want that to get scrapped. I could see however that maybe other countries would become involved due to the media attention. Don't know if any of you remember the 2008 Beijing Olympics where the Chinese Police arrested protesters about their human right issues but later had to release them as there was too much media attention on China. This is pretty much the same as this is taking place in Hong Kong where media is more free. Because of this I could see the other countries such as the USA to call on the UK and China to remember it's agreement and possibly the EU members and if things get worse POSSIBLY the UN as well as a few other organisations. Personally I can't see the UK government acting of it's own initiative.

We might not be able to succeed (touch wood), but at least we expressed our opinions and we attempted to change our future. Therefore, there will be no regret no matter what happens next.
