While I was waiting for the bus to go to my office this morning, this police car drove past, but it was unmarked.

 

it was a Red Vauxhall Astra, the new style. but one of the big give aways (apart from the drivers have stab vests on) was that there was a Durham Constabulary (North East England) Logo on the side but at the back, on the door frame. So a logo each side but in not an obvious place but noticeable.

 

They pulled up and got into another car that was a Toyota but was bright blue but that already had a driver in it and the two got of the vauxhall and went into that one, must of been like a sting operation.  The Officers were plain clothes, probably CID but yeah, how come the Vauxhall had a Logo but the Toyota did not?

Some unmarked vehicles aren't actually unmarked but are marked in very subtle ways. We have some in staffordshire which are ford focus'. No lightbar or anything but a logo on each door saying "Staffordshire Police". As far as I know they aren't used for pursuits and high priority callouts, just sort of...public relations sort of thing.

I think they are called 'ghost' cars. At least that's the lexicon in the US.

I know they've got cars out here that have some basic markings but lack stuff like lights and sirens. As far as I know they're used as runarounds for officers and not-so-important things.

I wouldn't be suprised if it's to do with the "high visibility policing" concept that are used by most forces. Unmarked vehicles aren't creating a visible police presence in the immediate area.

It seems like they have a >few beemers with force insignia as well
