My CVPI lighting setup!

Featured Replies

Hey everyone, there was a few people that wanted me to keep them updated on my setup for my CVPI, I currently have everything that I plan on installing except for the police console & switch box I get on Wednesday, I will be getting everything installed at once in the spring, which I don't think will be too far away, but this is everything I have that will be put into my car:

- 4 Universal Undercover LEDs ( Sound Off Signal)

- 4 Amber strobes in the front marker lights & reverse lights

- 6 White strobes in front marker lights, reverse & tail lights ( already installed)

- 1 light strip in back window

All will have there own switch.

& I go for a quote on a paintjob on Wednesday.

I asked an HRP Traffic Cop on Friday what the legalities of having lights/strobes installed in my car & this was the conversation:

Slimory:

Hi, Cst. Quesnel, I have a question that I need answered regarding strobes lights, I am a huge light fanatic they are a hobby of mine. I asked an Officer once before but didn't really give me a straight answer, I wanted to know the legalities of having them are? I will put out there I do have a crown vic, because that seems to be the most cause for concern, I do have strobes lights which are white and amber, I plan on using it for a show vehicle once I have it restored, I've never used them on a public roadway nor do I have red/blue lights as I do know & understand the consequences of possessing such lights, I do not abuse having them and have never given the police a reason to come knocking on my door about them so I figured being honest about having them would hopefully give a less negative response, I do NOT possess the following as i'm sure you do have Police Impersonators: Police Radio Push Bumper Light bar (Whelen Edge 9000MM Whelen Liberty *same as HRP uses*, Federal Signal Legend *same as the RCMP use) Siren Wig Wags Partition Gun rack(s) Trunk Gear Note I do NOT have any of these things, i'm not looking to have my door kicked in or piss the police off or anything like that but I would like to know the legalities of it & how you as a Traffic Cop feels about it, please, I understand that this is probably a touchy subject.

HRP Traffic Cop (That's what he calls himself on his Facebook page) his name is Constable Ray Quesnal of the Halifax Regional Police Traffic Services:

Good question, your strobes are ok as long as you are parked and not operating the vehicle on a highway. MVA 179(9) states Flashing or revolving lights on vehicles operated upon a highway are prohibited. Thus if your not moving and a show car it's ok. Hope that helps. RQ

For fucks sake, Who cares if he puts lights on it or not....? Who cares if he genuinely likes lights or if he is a wannabe? Why is there so much hostility? I mean really, this is a Law Enforcement gam

Sounds like a great setup you have there! And what kind of paint job, or color are you planning on getting?

Probably just a jet black or metallic black, the guy apparently has really good rates for painting & I already have all my lights purchased so I don't have to bother with that anymore :)

I'd like to buy more lights, but I've already spent *cough* $391.00 just on the 4 undercovers lol plus going to spend $275.00 on Wednesday for the used console & light switch box, maybe eventually this glass pack exhaust: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nx8g9zmDNx8

& I don't know if my alternator can handle anymore then that lol

I feel as though this thread will be turning into a "Post your emergency lights!" thread

I def welcome it!

Feelings mutual, but why the negative comment if you "know" i'm not like that?

I don't have red/blue lights a radio or any of the other gear nor do I want it, so how does that make anybody a wannabe?I could go buy a Nissan Altima and do the same thing.

I'm not stupid... Everyone here knows why you bought the CVPI and not a Nissan Altima to do this to But why did you put lights on your car? Do you have a job that requires it?

Did I say you were? no, I didn't... It's not illegal to do so as has been proven above.., no no, people THINK they know why I bought it yourself included, I can clearly see you are butt hurt for whatever reason & try & pick an argument ONLY because you don't believe in people buying them which is your right but I DO have a problem with you making assumptions that I'm a wannabe,  I don't have any actual police gear with any intent other then showing it off to my friends or going to car shows out here which can you believe that they do have them? who knew right? I put lights on my car because I like lights, is that really so hard to believe? to you maybe, but you can go ahead and believe what you'd like to, I won't hold it against you, did I mention I'm taking the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification in the fall? guess i'd have to be into that sort of thing eh?

EDIT: and a 2014 Nissan Altima starts at $22,100, my crown vic I paid $1200.00 cash.. do the math..

Not even going to try, go head put as many lights as you can on that thing. By the way i'm 100% sure your crown vic is a 2014. Why would you compare your crown vic to a a brand new vehicle that's just dumb. I have nothing against people putting lights on cars, but when someone buys a old police crown vic and then puts lights on it all i see is some kid that can't wait 5 years to become a cop.(not saying you are just voicing my opinion shoot me right?)

That is my problem but now if you are into modding your car with different things and turning it into one of those sport crown vics and taking it to car shows then i'm fine with it. But as soon as someone puts lights on a crown vic it turns from something cool to a kid just wanting to be a cop...

I just priced at 2003 Altima $4300.00 which is the better deal?, problem is your stereotyping or "generalizing" what they were used for.. you don't know anything of what your saying to be true other then what you hear and read which I've never personally seen, I don't need your "justification" to put mods on my car, you know how many people I know that are crown vic fanatics? how many people are snatching them up and restoring them? I know a few.. If they had come out with stock crown vics like the Interceptors with nothing in them, I would have bought one, but they didn't, so, I guess an ex cop car will do, unless I'm decaling out my car & putting red/blue lights all over it , radios, gun racks or anything like that, I don't see a problem, lights can be hidden.. push bumpers and spot lights can't, which is kind of over doing it, but a push bumper isn't anything out of the ordinary, would I buy a Taurus PI? probably not, because they do come stock, would I buy an ex cop car charger? probably not, because I can go into a dealer and buy one, would I buy an ex Police Ford Explorer? probably not, because I can go into a dealership and buy one, see what I'm saying?

Not to mean to go off topic, but with the generalization that everyone says that people buy ex-police vehicles in the attempt to Personate a Peace Officer is actually more false than true in most Canadian provinces.

I actually asked an RCMP how he feels when he see's someone with an ex-police vehicle, and he for sure did not say that he see's them as a 'wannabe'. He rather stated that he believes most people purchase an ex-police vehicle with good intentions. They're affordable, reliable, and a decent car. With some small mods you can make it last a good few years. He also said that most people who buy them are cab companies anyways, but the percentage of civilian owners have no wrong intentions with the vehicle. Most cases in which one was charged with Personating a Peace Officer, either it was a non-vehicle related incident or the vehicle was that of which was not an ex-police vehicle. He said in Alberta a small percentage of those incidents involve an actual ex-police car. Not saying it hasn't happened, but it very RARELY happens with an ex-police vehicle.

The last incident I've heard of in AB where the crime was committed, the accused was driving a Nissan Acura. The generalization that someone purchases an ex-police vehicle with the intention to impersonate is a very poor judgement. They're good cars, cheap, reliable. May be gas guzzlers, but which would you prefer; A car that will start in -40 degrees Celsius with no issues, or your 'fuel efficient' hybrid that needs to be plugged in to be started in such weather.

I can respect what Slimory is doing, and while some can question why he is doing it, what does it matter? It's none of your business. He's going through the proper steps in order to ensure he is following all regulations and laws. He has no intention of using the vehicle in any way shape or form to impersonate. It's a project car. If he was going up and down the roads at 140+ km/h with the lights going just to get to somewhere faster, I'd have a problem, but since he is respecting the laws and going through all the proper steps to ensure what he is doing is LEGALI can respect that.

No, buying an ex-police vehicle does not automatically make someone a wannabe, and most people who purchase them are cab companies, regular everyday people, or people who just want a project car. Less than 9% I'd say are 'Police Wannabes', atleast from my experience.

Hey Slimory, the car sounds nice. I love lights also, a lot of people have lights in my town rather they're a Cop or Volunteer FF. No one really has amber lights because it's kind of pointless but if someone likes and it's really the only thing they can do as far as colors then it is fine. Whenever I get my CVPI or Interceptor I will have B/W lights in the front and R/B in the back because in New York that is what a Volunteer FF can have and I'm going to be one. So keep us updated because I want to see it and don't let the haters get to you, they just jealous lmao.

I don't get that entire "Police wannabe discusion". I mean what the hell?
It's his damn car. He can do with it whatever he wants as long as he does not violate a law in his State/Country
I'm pretty sure Slimory won't go out there and do false traffic stops or anything like that.

Therefore i totally agree with Termination and what he said here:
