Ye, what they said. For $1000 you can build your own Desktop with quite a few good parts. Make sure to get fans.

 

But if you need, absolutely NEED a laptop, usually $1000 won't get you the best gaming laptop, but may get you an entry-level/mid-end gaming piece.

http://www.lpc-digit.../notebooks.html has some really nice ones too, try and get ones at/near the top of the page. Things like a NVIDIA GTX 760M and 770M, with either i5 or i7 processors would be good. I am not quite sure how reliable these are, though. Several reviews have given about 4/5 stars.

This is the best answer. I built my computer and I spent right under $1,200 USD. I have no problems running anything and It was a great investment considering I use my computer A LOT!!! some sights that sell computer hardware even have pre-built computers for you.

What do you mean for "direct connection"? Ethernet, maybe?

If this is the case (you have no chance for a wired LAN) you can use a Wireless card: there are a lot of high permormance WiFi cards in commerce.

Well, I have a Pavilion dv7, it runs BF3 on meduim to high at 40fps, really good. It's under $1000.

• If you're a casual gamer and you don't need a powerful pc for specific needs, (I assume that) laptop's mobility and comfort is what you're searching for.

 

Keep in mind that, in most of the cases, at the same price a desktop pc is better than a laptop (generally talking)

And as said before: you can use WiFi connectivity in a desktop pc too.

SSD... I'm quite sure that the game is not worth it. People are going crazy with useless SSD fastness: nowadays SSD it's pretty overpriced, about $1 per GB.

I strongly suggest to save those $100 for a better CPU. If you need a fast HDD (as I do for work purposes) there's a cheap and efficient way: RAID configurations. Right now I'm using two HDD in a risky but very fast RAID 0.

SSD has no sense: even though applications start embarassing fast (is it really that necessary? can't wait 30 secs for a pro app to start?), you have no room for them. Furthermore, if you're working in Photoshop (to make an example) with heavy dimension files, you need the program to have a fast (very) big dedicated temp folder (which you'll be forced to have in the slow HDDs). Nonsense.

For a commercial reason, Nvidia could be a better choice: simply, for one reason or another, is more supported than ATI (CUDA, Physx, etc...). And generally speaking, don't know why, but ATIs are more troublesome than they should be.

I do agree with you.. SSD are very fast and they don't use Ram, as HDD uses ram. but SSD have gone down in price but still very overpriced.

While they're way more expensive than RAID 0, they're also much safer than RAID 0 (though something like hardware RAID 5 or a RAID 10 is both safe and fast).

for the money you can have two video cards these are the parts that I recommend for the price. and it will run GTAIV with LCPDFR 1.0 and ENB at very high settings.

Talking about programs, as far as I've seen, the only noticeable speed benefit is for the first start loading times. But I'm pretty sure that there is no pratical benefit for the program running itself, as it has already been loaded in RAM.

It's an expensive way to make Photoshop start in 2 seconds than in 10/20 and work as always, whatever the storage is.
