If you're searching for a gaming pc, or more in general a powerful and long-living station, a desktop pc is recommended. If you're a casual gamer and you don't need a powerful pc for specific needs, (I assume that) laptop's mobility and comfort is what you're searching for.
Keep in mind that, in most of the cases, at the same price a desktop pc is better than a laptop (generally talking)
And as said before: you can use WiFi connectivity in a desktop pc too.

But if you need, absolutely NEED a laptop, usually $1000 won't get you the best gaming laptop, but may get you an entry-level/mid-end gaming piece.
