Most of these shootings are in so-called "förorter" (Suburb is the closest translation) and it is related to a ongoing gang war between Hells Angels and Backagänget (Rough translation: "Gang of Backa", where "backa" is a suburb). Not all of the shootings are related to that particular gang war, there are other "minor" wars going on between the different suburbs. I live in "Hisings Backa" (the "home" of backa gänget). There are 4 major suburbs in Göteborg City:

1. Hisingen (with surrouding areas)
2. Biskopsgården
3. Brämaregården
4. Tynnered - Frölunda (close vicinity to eachother, basically the same).
(And then there's Inner City, where there ALSO are gangs, but not in the same way.)
All of these have their own gang, or several minor gangs. They are currently fighting over:

  • Weapons
  • Drugs
  • People (human smuggling)
  • Territory

The police are making arrest, yes, but it's an ongoing thing and I think it will continue for quite a while. Innocent people have been hit on several occasions, but usually the shots are fired against a specific target. Crossfire is always a thing though.

Politicians are now considering real-time camera surveillance to decrease the amount of shootings, and be able to arrest more people.
I just wanted to make people aware of this. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have.

As horrible as this is, at-least most of the shootings are at specific targets, not random attacks. The same goes for Australia, the majority of our shootings are the results of bikie (biker gang) wars.

Out of curiosity, how often does this sort of stuff happen in Sweden? I rarely hear about it, so I assume it's quite rare.

It's been quite often these days, the ones I have listed are just in Gothenburg. There have been more, unrelated shootings in other parts of Sweden (even a brutal murder, where a body was chopped up and dumped in the  sea).
Shootings are now sadly part of the everyday life in the suburbs which is really sad. I hope the police can get the situation under control. The reason why people outside do not hear about it is that it's getting to "normal" to make the news. I read the paper yesterday and the priorities of the media are kind of ridiculous. The shootings get a small notice and a few sentences while a celebrity getting a speeding ticket reaches the front page....

It's all pretty hush hush about it. When I live with my mother, the murdered person lived on the opposite street that we live on. It was a little weird. I'm thinking of creating a topic of that murder since it's pretty interesting.

so information is pretty secret no info if its gang related? but anyways hopefully your police force cant stop these shooting

That murder was not related to gang activity, I just brought it up as an example of violence that happens in Sweden. And yes, I do hope so too.

I didn't know it was that bad there. When I vacationed in the city back in March, it seemed like an extremely lovely city. I met so many great people when I was there. Has this been a common trend for the past few years or a rapid escalation of violence? Does it happen year around or only seasonally when it's warmer/colder?

It usually is a lovely city, with a great bunch of people, but these days it's getting more and more violent. The suburbs is no place to be at night.

It's always been a little "unruly" in the suburbs but it's been escalating out of control for the past 3 years or so.

We have pretty strict weapon-laws in Sweden (or so I thought before everyone started shooting eachother). No one (except police and guards etc) are allowed to carry guns.

Pretty much the only thing strict weapon laws do are keep weapons out of the hands of honest citizens. If someone has no moral qualms about murdering another person (which is against the law), they certainly would have no objection to owning weapons illegally. Though strict laws would curb the gun supply, I'm sure you could buy any weapons you wanted for the right price, which would spur more robberies and drug sales to finance the weapons.

*Note that this is strictly my opinion and you are free to disagree with it. Also, this topic is not tagged as a debate topic, so please don't drag this out into a 10 page long thread about whether guns should be legal.

Cops will never be able to stop gang related shootings, personally I think we should put all gangbangers in a dome give them a few guns lock the door and come back a few weeks later.

My guess its probably a gang related shooting as about 99% of all shootings are gang related...

Yeah the thing with those laws is only criminals will get guns then, when Washington DC had there gun ban back in the 70s, 80s and 90s it was the same way (befoore the supreme court ruled it was unconsitional). No one was able to own a side arm (besides police and what not)  but during that time the amount of shootings went up and the amount of gun violations went up. ironically enough...

I actually agree with this. brutal as it sounds. My thought have always been that they would run out of people to shoot at after a while.
