did you not read what the guy said about what happened. She was threatening the teachers with a weapon. so that isn't a good reason to go in a lock down to you?

I read what he said, it shouldn't of been a HARD LOCKDOWN, it should of been a non-emergency lock down, but this is just stupid debating back and fourth over should the school of been locked down. From what I see the school over reacted but I don't know what the parent said or did. yes we have a brief summery, but thats not good enough to make a accurate judgement. Its always better to be safe then sorry but in my opinion a HARD LOCKDOWN, should only be use when there is active threat. Such as a person with a gun ect...

Just calm down and take it easy. I am not taking any sides here however, Darkangel is correct, we know too little to argue over anything.  Lets just be happy that no one got hurt.

the funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it

Let me put it this way: Most of us on this forum have interest in police work and understand the use of force, right? Police use force when they feel threatened and it is deemed necessary to end an altercation that could cause bodily harm. They will swiftly resort to things like tasers, which are generally non lethal and is used as a compliance tool before things turn deadly. A lockdown is like a taser. It is intended to prevent someone from causing any harm to anyone before the potential criminal can act. It's a measure of safety. I get angry people at my job all the time, but I've never had anyone directly threaten me. There's a definite difference between the two. Someone once did threaten a colleague of mine with a gun, we called the local police and one officer showed up and stood near the door for about an hour or two with his hand on his pistol, while other members of the department went searching for the man at his house. I don't care what kind of building your in or what you think of the person doing the threatening. Guns are no joke.

Okay, another update - the woman was threatening she had a sharp object in her purse (wow, didn't see that coming -.- ) and she seemed to be really trying to intimidate the teachers and receptionists. In my opinion, with the Nevada shootings and all, a hard lockdown was a good precaution taken. Usually, soft lockdowns are when we get wild animals on campus (sometimes coyotes since I live in So. Cal. or even stray bears). One of my teachers was saying there were bees swarming some years ago, and they were dangerously close to the doors. In a soft lockdown, the teachers may still teach, the lights must stay on, but the students may not move between classes.

why would you run back into the school that is issuing a lockdown? I woulda ran the fuck out of there until it was done

Well, it was mentioned the threat was in the office, so they didn't want us anywhere near the office. Our school is really big (we've even got some isolated classrooms outside called 'portables') so we didn't really need to go into the community. It really shocked me something like this happened in my city, because it was voted the safest city in America not too long ago, and for all I know it may still be. That being said, it doesn't mean it's totally safe. Unfortunately, there was a robbery about a month ago and a murder a couple of years ago. Ever since then, it's been really quiet.

SCNG FTW!!

i wasnt whining or complaining at all if you dont want to change your opinion i dont care all i told you was that she had a weapon

At my school we had a bomb threat a few weeks ago, and frankly it concerned me how little school officials cared. The building was evacuated using fire drill procedure and students were not moved any further from the building than they would be for a fire (50-100 feet). No emergency responders showed up even as a just in case kinda thing, the principals went to check on their own.

Hmmmm, putting the whole school into lock-down because of one out of control parent...? You can't just get her to calm down? You have to drag the whole school into a very small situation... Urg, too much drama in school these days.

This is the United States, I bet the UK hasn't had as much school shootings than the US. Schools over here have one priority, and it is student/staff safety. My school went on lockdown because a suspicious guy was walking on the sidewalks going back and forth for about an hour. It's not that the schools are stereotypical about everyone... they just care about our safety!

We had a bad one in Scotland in the 90's

The Dunblane school massacre, The gunman, 43-year-old Thomas Hamilton entered the school armed with four handguns, shooting and killing sixteen children and one adult before committing suicide. Along with the 1987 Hungerford massacre, 1989 Monkseaton shootings and the 2010 Cumbria shootings it remains one of the deadliest criminal acts involving firearms in the history of the United Kingdom. At my school I see police officers running after the local junkies and criminals every day, one day in a higher physics department a guy came into the classroom with a crow bar! Now when the bell rings for break and you walk out looking at police officers carrying a screaming man it's not a good felling inside.

I personally thick schools need to lock all doors during classes because any old person could walk into a school over here and there is easy access to classrooms for any gunman. Our school dose not even have a PA system so to get a report across to all teachers and puples to evacuate would be catastrophic. If I were a man with a gun I could walk into my school and have everyone in the English department dead before anyone even knew what was going on.

I'm Shure American schools are locked up tight but if there is any Scottish folk here who are at school and know there is not a sufficient response method pleas reenforce my pint. But it may just be my school and the area it is in :-)
