GFWL Shutting Down July 2014

Featured Replies

Finally getting rid of the most annoying feature of the game, I remember those days of signing in to steam, signing into Rockstar and then GFWL, then having to have all 3 running at the same time when they all do the same thing (except steam is the best).

I don't think they're getting rid of multiplayer all together, Rockstar will probably release a update to enable multiplayer in the same way it is run now or someones going to release a mod that does the exact same thing. By then a majority of people would have GTA V/ GTA Online.

And finally Microsoft realises that they can't compete with the stable platform steam has already created for PC, now we just have to wait for EA to realise that too.

  • Rarely do I voice my opinion, especially to a well known user, but I believe that there are some people who enjoy being in clans, that's obviously why they join them. I myself love running my clan. Ma

  • guys.. gta4 mp will still be here.. its the store not the whole thing.. read every post before you reply..

  • I am really not worried about it.  GFWL will make sure the people who only have a gaming PC and not a console, will still be able to play online.

I Think you should take your own advice and read the comment above yours

Maybe you should read the post.  I just copied and pasted what was said below.  Take your own advice you are the one who didnt read it properly.

"Current users of the service will be able to play their Games for Windows Lives games indefinitely, but don't expect to buy anything from the store after August.

After August 22, the marketplace will officially close, along with any leftover credit you have not redeemed by that time. Microsoft is encouraging user to spend the rest of their Microsoft points before that date. The closure of the marketplace is a product of the upcoming changes to Xbox Live's marketplace, and the abandonment of Microsoft points.

"As part of the recent Xbox 360 system update, Microsoft Points will be retired and the Xbox.com PC Marketplace will be closed as of August 22, 2013. We encourage you to spend your Microsoft Points balance prior to this change. Although you will not be able to purchase new games, you can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading it through the Games for Windows Live client software as usual.

"For more on the closure, you can check out Microsoft's full FAQ."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the BBC's watchdog isn't a government regulatory agency, correct?

You're correct, it isn't. However, it does document the work of regulatory bodies and works along side them (which was why the story was covered), passing along information if necessary, often the public humiliation is enough to see a business change its ways. I am also lead to believe most of the presenters and staff behind the show are former civil servants who worked in OFT, TS.

This seems more reasonable than what I thought you were saying - saying Rockstar can no longer produce new boxart saying "MP" is fair, though it does seem a bit strange to force a recall of what's currently in stores (particularly because GTA IV can be in stores without Rockstar's knowledge).

It is then the retailers responsibility to ensure their stock gets updated, i.e send all the old back to Rockstar for new, as it would be illegal to continue displaying it with misleading information once the ASA or OFT has stepped in.

I don't see how this answers the question. If the disclaimer is on the box, that's part of how the product is being described, is it not? If you have to buy it to see the disclaimer, that clearly is something that can justify a refund, but if the disclaimer is on the box, isn't that something that's part of the product description? If I have an ad for a cruise, show the most luxurious room on the ad, and say "Tickets starting from $50", is it assumed that $50 will pay for such a room?

It depends how prominent it is on the box. Recently in England we had a spate of pay-day loan companies, which said you could borrow up to £500 in BIG letters, but in tiny small letters said at 1777% APR and that was ordered to change. In terms of your cruise question, the picture has to be representative of the quality of the room you would get for £50, if it is vastly different then it could be considered misleading. Many businesses work around that though by not actually showing a room, but rather the communal facilities.

I submit that anything that would ever require Rockstar to *exist* forever is a stupid, stupid law.

Also, this is not even close to the first time online games have shut down. City of Heroes was an MMO that shut down. It prominently advertised online play. Its publisher is still in business. And yet, it shut down. If what you are saying is true, it is never legal to shut down MP for a game once you create it.

Okay, I was exaggerating that I would expect Rockstar to last 1000 years, it is more the case that I would like my favourite developer to last a 1000 years. Of course, it is legal to shut down a service, but it needs to be done with care and consideration. That consideration usually being notice, 30 days, now Microsoft has given notice in regards to the end of its GFWL service - even though it said it doesn't have to, but the disclaimer I made reference to seems to be separate from that and specific to the Rockstar Games - who has given no notice or acknowledgement of this scenario and until they do I can continue to expect the service.

Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that the word "reasonable" is used a lot in consumer law and I would query whether, even with notice, it's reasonable for Rockstar to end its online services. Firstly, GTAIV Pc multiplayer is still used by thousands, if not, tens of thousands of people and secondly, the service will continue on Ps3 and Xbox 360. In addition to this, it's convenient and would be to Rockstar's gain to force the PC users, who up until now I have said "I'll wait for GTAV to come to the PC and play GTAIV multiplayer in the meantime" and by stopping GTAIV multiplayer it is effectively pressure selling the console copy. It's like a window salesman saying "You have double glazing at the moment, but look at our new triple glazing" then when you say "I'll wait" him the proceeding to smash all of your windows in.

Hench

Games for Windows Live is not shutting down only the Marketplace for Xbox 360 is, therefore you will still be able to play multiplayer but you will not be able to buy anything on title="Click to Continue > by CouponDropDown">Xobx 360. Its already closed, it closed down August 22, 2013. Multiplayer will be here forever as said in the post by www.gameinformer.com. I don't think they are getting rid of gta 4 multiplayer. I think somehow with GTA Online being created they will be moving gta 4 multiplayer over to that. I really don't know though wether or not that would be possible. I do however think this would make sense looking to the fact that before the release of gta 5 they are not refering to it as gta 5 multiplayer. Signifying there might be something bigger to come out of this than we know. I doubt Rockstar will fall below most of our expectations with GTA Online.

Okay...I kinda agree but here's my look of this i just found out but,

If GFWL Is supposedly shutting down, I don't think it's been justified yet that it IS EXACTLY going to shutdown.

This happened with Lego Universe, they had a meeting discussed rather or not to shut it down.

That's gonna be whats probably gonna happen with GFWL.

If they do end up shutting it down. They woulden't leave us hanging. Especially the RCMP Clan.

Millions to billions and maybe Thousand of Millions play and have clans or whatever for this mod on MP.

If they drop MP straight they'll be losing a WHOLE LOT of money.

Because side DLCs EFLCs excetra.

Saying that straight up there, Means that the people who play video games, Want their games to have a Team-Work or Just anything competitive with other real players.

So what i'm trying to say here is. If Rockstar Games and GTA 4 Wanna loose alot of money, they'll leave us hanging,

If they don't they'll already have discussed a new MP engine that is Co-Operations with GFWL so they can stay with the community friends and stuff. or they can leave the GFWL PC Dashboard with friends all that stuff.

So what i'm trying to say is unless they wanna loose millions or so of money, They won't get a new MP Engine, If they do get a New M P Engine they'll keep their money so, You see guys what i'm trying to say here. If they end up doing that they'll drop out the millions okay? i'm trying to explain as best as i can. Get what i am trying to say?

Yes see...Guys they'll basically and im trying not to exacderate but they'ed be SHUTTING DOWN HALF OF MILLIONS OF PLAYERS IN THE WHOLE WORLD!!!!

Okay, I have no problem or hate against Steam.

I actually use them.

But, What I've Read in these comments and In Announcements, Is that Steam Basically Shut them down by the Way they have, All the currency Nowadays.

I myself has NO Proof of that, But due to the fact some games in the Steam Marketplace, Are VERY Overpriced, Considering Loss of Good Graphics Take Half Life 2 For instance, It has the most horrible graphics and VERY Very Gross zombies and stuff if a 5 Year old was to play that it would be very very gross.

It had Very Poor Graphics

Very very Graphic Content

(e.g. Zombie And Headcrabs and blood)

And yet its still (Also created in 19 or so) Like 20-30 Dollars.

And the way the greenlight any poor game with any graphics by Votes...It's rediculous.

They (I have no Proof but this is what im thinkin of) Basically Cheated GFWL Out of Business.

But since it's probably gonna shut down.

We may as well enjoy it while we can

BUT JUST THINK!

STEAM HAS GTA 4 !!! SO YOU CAN STILL HAVE HOPE OF MP!

I did my research before I posted itand created my own thread.  There is nothing on the Microsoft website or the Xbox Live site to justify or confirm the GFWL is shutting down.  When I asked Microsoft about there plans with GFWL they refused to answer my question.

So you quoted mine to agree?

Or To disagree? I was basically on your side with my post.

That's not what EA is doing. They're making their content only available through them so they get the revenue directly, and the digital client is a way of easily distributing them. I doubt they're going to convince competing publishers to use EA's system for a tax.

Ok. I'm confused right now. Games for Windows Live shut down their marketplace, and all multiplayer games will no longer be able to be played online by next year. Is that correct?
