Problems with the polpatriot slot

Has anyone experienced crashing with any non-default vehicle placed in the polpatriot slot?  It seems as if every single modded car I put in there crashes the game; either immediately or within a few minutes of gameplay.

I've tried out multiple things in that slot, including Lt. Caine's landstalker and landstalker ESU truck, Corleone's Chevrolet Savanna LCPD edition, among others.  Still get crashes.  Note that I'm using the regular version of GTA IV with proper patching.  I've replaced the vehicles.ide file with the default and that doesn't seem to correct the problem, not to mention that all my other police slots are modded without a problem.

could be your .IDE

I've replaced it with the original game's setup on multiple occasions and that doesn't seem to rectify anything.  Any suggestions?

I don't have any problem with polpatriot slot, as well as 99% of the members here.

FCV96, do you use ELS7 ? Did you save with a polpatriot in a parking lot ?

I do currently use ELSV7, but was having problems with the polpatriot slot ever since I first modded - that was when V6 was out.  And I do not currently have anything saved in a safehouse parking spot. If it is the .ide file, would you care to post your section for polpatriot?  This is what mine looks like;

polpatriot,    polpatriot,    car,        POLPAT,        POLPAT,        VEH@VAN,    VEH@VAN_FO1_FO1,    100,    999,        0.2786, 0.2786,        0,    4,    1.5    ,1,    truckfirefx+livery

Don't replace anything in Polpatriots slot. This happens to me to. Just use another slot mate.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one incurring this problem.

Ok here is my ide line :

polpatriot,    polpatriot,    car,        POLPAT,        POLPAT,        VEH@VAN,    VEH@VAN_FO1_FO1,    100,    999,        0.2786, 0.2786,        0,    4,    1.5    ,1,    livery

But I don't think that the issue comes from this file, the default one should worked and you tested it.

Just for troubleshooting, do you have crashes if you remove ELS ? Try it, it'll help to know where is the problem.

Also, if you put the default polpatriot, everything is ok ?

Do you have every other vehicle modded? (All police vehicles and the Ambulance and Fire Truck). If so, try Making one of the other vehicles a vanilla, and then have the polpatriot with a modded ELS vehicle (I know that having all ELS vehicles can make the game unstable, and by just having 1 vanilla can increase stability)

It could also be to do with the polys of the vehicles you're using, and your computer can't handle it, try using a modded non ELS vehicle, they tend to have less polys.

It could just be that those models don't work on your computer. I know that for me, a GMC Yukon won't work 9/10 of the times I use it, so, try as many vehicles as you can (even cars like the Taurus or Crown Victoria) and see how that goes.

Agreed on the .ide part.  I did replace the standard polpatriot and with ELSV7 installed everything works perfectly fine.  Go figure.

I have only the police vehicles in my game modded; all are either DSF mid-poly cars or Lt. Caine's modded vanilla cars.  I would assume that game resources were the problem had the game crashed in general, but it only seems to have problems when a modded polpatriot is spawned.  I suppose I'll try out several different models in the slot and see how that goes.

EDIT: It seems as if you were correct; certain vehicles just don't seem to work.  Note that Lt. Caine's modded vanilla Rancher works fine and does not crash the game when selected;

That advice turned out to be solid; see the edited portion of my post above.  I was already using a few of Lt. Caine's default modded cars and it seems as if his Rancher has solved my problems. ^-^

LoL ok your edit just ninja'd me ^^

I do have one more question for you, however.  What handling line are you using for the Rancher included in that pack?  The default makes the vehicle much too difficult to maneuver and the default Rancher handling makes the vehicle too front-heavy, therefore also making it hard to control.

I use the default Rancher handling line, I don't have too much problems to control it, but yeah the default Polpatriot handling is not good for this one.

I play with controller on GTA IV, maybe it makes a difference.

Ahh, gotcha.  I stick with my mouse and keyboard so that could be the discrepancy.  Thanks for the help though; I appreciate it.  You too, emptw1!

Yeah I'm a "keyboard+mouse FTW" guy too :p but GTA IV without controller (Xbox360 pad) is not that good for driving imho.

I can see where you're coming from; the analog controls to depress the gas and brake pedals certain amounts as well as in the steering are probably much more authentic than the digital "always on or always off" keyboard control.

If it feels to heavy, you may want to go into the handling.dat and alter the centre of mass for the polpatriot, there are posts all over the internet which kinda explain how to edit it, but it's mostly trial and error. What you want to do, is just fly around corners in the car and see if you tend to flip over, or spin out. If you spin out, your centre of mass is too high, if your flip, it's too low. The fact that you may have a high centre of mass could be why it feels heavy when stopping, so just speed around the city and experiment. Or it could be because Darth is pro with the ranger :P
