Worldwide March Against Monsanto

Recommended Posts

Unsurprisingly, this is barely being mentioned in the media (the US at least, not sure about others). Anyways, the march is about people being against the food company Monsanto, which modifies seeds of plants to be resistant. However, health concerns are caused by the genetic altering, leading to over 60 countries banning GMO foods due to no proof that GMOs are safe. Monsanto has even fought against labeling of foods as GMOs. One of the more bothersome parts about this company's power is that recently a bill was passed by the US Congress titled the Monsanto Protection Act, which gives the company immunity to any potential laws deeming it unsafe for part of this year.

An estimated 2 million people across 52 countries have showed up for these marches, here is a link to a news story.

Sticks and stones may break bones, but 5.56 fragments on impact.

I'm glad I saw this. My local news was talking about protests on this tonight and I was clueless!

Thanks!

I'm not pro-Monsanto, but IMO GMO, after being perfected and tested, is the way to go. GMO plants don't need to be sprayed with chemicals (in most cases), and are more efficient and resistant. I think that only thanks to such plants we will be able to sustain growing world population.

When we are sure that GMOs are safe, of course.

Calm down, he just suggested that they could be pretty useful if they are improved and make safe. It's just an opinion.

I'm glad to see there's so many people aware of this problem. Personally I wouldn't want to eat these laboratory products. Besides these multinationals harm the smaller farmers.Oh, and by the way, Monsanto produced the Orange Agent thrown in Vietnam that so many genetic problems has caused.

Why yes, research has been done. The researchers aren't the ones marching. That's because the research concluded that it was safe. I agree with your last sentence, though.

As for why countries ban the food: Clearly, marijuana is super-dangerous for everyone. I mean, look how many places ban it.

I'm pretty sure that their strands of resistant food have saved thousands of lives in developing countries as well, due to it being really the only thing that can grow there. Don't quote me on that, but it sounds familiar to me.
