Recording Setups

Recommended Posts

So I've decided to make a youtube channel and what not. I have the basics. Fraps, some editing software, and a mic. (It's a webcam mic that I despise, however it'll do for now.) But I was wondering, what do you guys use? What microphones do you use or do you want, what software do you use, etc. I'm relatively new to this so it would be interesting to get some feedback from some people who've been doing this for a while.

I'm not really a "Youtuber" who made a ton of videos, but anyway that's what I have :

- Mic headset : Logitech 860 / have also Roland headphones & mic for music working

- Video recording : Bandicam / free good alternative : DxTory

- Video editing : Premiere Pro / free alternatives : WindowsMovieMaker (...), LightWorks, other good alternatives I know are for Linux.

Avoid webcam mic because you'll have surrounding noises too.

If you have a mic and you have "pops" when you're speaking, put a (clean) sock on it or something like that, it will act like a (cheap) homemade filter.

Here's what I currently use

  • Headset: ARCTIC P301 Gaming Headset
  • Game Recorder: FRAPS Full
  • Video Editor: Sony Vegas Pro 11 / Camtasia Studio 8 / Sony Vegas Pro 12 / Windows Live Movie Maker

In the near future once I'm done building my computer, I'm going to save up for a Blue Yeti Microphone.

Fraps and built-in mic on laptop. Might try for a commentary

I recommend that you don't use a laptop mic for commentaries. They are usually very bad quality and give a lot of background noise. I think you should get a head set :)

I'm working on getting another mic/headset. The mic I had for whatever reason decided to stop working correctly. (Audio cuts in and out and is very very low even with boost.) As for the homemade filter, that's pretty smart. :) Hopefully I can get away from this terrible webcam mic sometime soon! :p

You should only need to record in 30fps or 24fps. 30fps is good for gaming but 24fps is good a good old movie look. (if you don't know movies are typically 24 fps (unless your The Hobbit and film in 48fps cause fuck everybody else)) I'm not even sure is YouTube shows faster then 30fps.

I think I may have set it to 50 FPS on accident. I just really wanted to show the half size, for that makes your game run smoother and the file size smaller. FRAPS records in extremely large files.

Well if you use half-size you can't put out sexy 1080p content.

Exactly what I thought. But they are kinda expensive. But I might reconsider it :D

Yes, but it works doesn't it? Would you rather have great quality video and a huge file taking up your hard drive, or good looking video with good performance, and file not so large? I just shared how I do it, that's all.

Well I have a terabyte hard drive dedicated to FRAPS and I don't get a big performance hit.
