Firearm Advice

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I know there's some people around this community who fairly knows about firearms, hence I guess about their complements too, so I was wondering if you can tell me which kind of sights (if it's possible the exact name) were using by the US Army since the Vietnam era up to the Desert Storm. If you also know and could tell me which sights used other armies such as British, Soviet, etc I would greatly appreciate too.

Thank you in advance:)

(I need the info for a small project I am working on and I don't know what exactly search)

Sights, as in basic iron sights? or Optics?

The U.S. Army uses many sights and optics. As a Calvary Scout ona SKT, then MP at 2 different bases, I used probly 20-30 different types of optics and sights.

Anything from Red Dot Optics, to Holographic, to Reflex, even basic tubescopes.

This also depends on the weapon(obviously), and what the soldier's MOS is.

I don't have a lot of knowledge about the era you are asking about, but seems a pretty broad question if I understand it correctly.

We use the EO Tech Holographic weapon sight for some of our M4A1s, but a majority of which were the Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight (AGOG). It's all about the manner of which you plan to use the application. However, our Barrett sniper rifles, the new XM2010s, and the now all-but-replaced M14 EBRs used specific rifled scopes tailored to them.

What specific weapons systems are you looking for?

In Vietnam to Gulf War 1 the US military used the m16 carry handle with aperture sights, some special forces were using early versions of aimpoints by the late 80's and early 90's.

Currently it is various.I know for sure basic infantry has eotech 553s, ACOGs, some have Eotech's with flip to side magnifers, and aimpoint COMPM4s, but most of it is ACOGs. Special forces have the same, but I have seen them use Elcan and Leupold scopes on their rifles.

Light machine guns will either have iron sights or about 1/3 to a half, depending on units, will have Elcan sights and a few have ACOGs. One real nice scope that is on some of the Barretts will automatically make corrections for bullet drop and wind conditions.

Well, I am not looking for modern days sights, but thanks for your help;)

What I am looking is for pre-1990s sights. I know mostly was used the default aperture sight, thought I've also seen pictures from that era with older aiming systems that I guess resemble to the modern ACOG sights. (It were cylindrical, with a length similar to the carrying handle).

By other hand I've also seen night vision devices and some telescopic sights, mostly from vietnam era so I'm wondering if you know about what could be used in the 80s-Desert Storm, since I guess they were more advanced. The Litton M-845 night vision sight is the only one I've found so far, in a picture of a SEAL member in the late 80s.

Sorry my questions are not very specific but I don't know much about the weapon complement subject :(

this might be a stretch but try searching wikipedia for them they might have some info for the era your looking for. if not i would try asking around on callofduty.filefront.com they might have some info there too. hope it helps

Well, just wanted to say that randomly I came across with the scope that, I believe, I was looking for; FYI it's called Colt 3x20 scope (it also has a 4x20 variant). It was used since the Vietnam era

This is it (picture not mine):
