NYC residents here?

Featured Replies

I actually never thought of visiting NYC, but after I played GTA IV and learned that Liberty City is nearly identical to NYC I went all skeptical. Liberty City was amazing, especially Algonquin (Manhattan), with it's skyscrapers, illuminated neon lights, theaters, you name it. After playing GTA IV I might consider going to NYC this summer holidays (if funds are available). But I would like the opinion of people who went to NYC once or are native New Yorkers (especially ones who reside or visited Manhattan, as that is my primary point of interest). So how is it there? Is it complete shit or do/did you have the time of your life?

I'm curious to know. But from seeing films and general media coverage on NYC, I can guess that:

  • The roads surrounding middle park are relatively the same
  • Star Junction is accurate in terms of traffic flow direction
  • The chinese restaurant thing near helitours is identical
  • FIA is relatively similar to JFK Airport

Its been my lifelong dream to visit NY, prehaps even live there one day, I just love the sheer amount of people and things to do in that city, its better than the majority of mainland Britain. One very very far away dream is to join the NYPD (I've done research, it is possible but its extremely long-winded and complicated compared to if you are a natural-born citizen)

If you do go, get some pictures! :D

I'll grab some pics of the NYPD and miscellaneous stuff while I'm visiting (hopefully). :)

Well, after visiting New York now I can't see Liberty City as New York. I got the game before going NYC, it was one of the reasons I got GTA IV, cause I wanted to play in somewhere similar to New York.

It's true that in Liberty City are places that are similar to NYC, and as I guess you know, buildings copied to the originals in New York; but there are many places places, avenues, etc. missing, like the Greenwich and West Village zone, big part of Harlem... and many others are very differently located than in the real life, plus they are much smaller.

Avenues are also much smaller in GTA IV; while in LC you go running in 5 minutes from its equivalent of Times Square to the downtown, in NYC you need about 1 hour.

So don't expect something like LC, NYC is much better and beautiful:P

I really liked New York, I can't wait to go back, but after visiting it, most GTA IV map dissapoints me.

If you go, enjoy it!

As a former NYC resident, the real NYC is definitely way better. Liberty City is a nice "snapshot" of some of the well-known areas and somewhat stereotyped representation of others, with a healthy dose of a ludicrously high crime rate and extreme poverty tossed in.

You will have fun here little towns/neighborhoods are just as great as the major parts of the city. If you visit a Fire Station they might let you come inside. A police station might be a different story. You can't walk in there for no reason. LC and NYC are different but similar LC doesn't stand a chance against NYC. Enjoy your stay here in the Big Apple!!

I've only visited NY, not lived there, but I can tell you that LC doesn't do close to doing it justice. LC is a city that you can pretty much get to know in a few days; there aren't that many things you can do. In NYC, there is SO MUCH to do. I've visited a bunch, gone to different places each time, and still have done less than 1% of the things you can do.

Thanks for the responses guys, I heard NYC had a pretty rude community? Is this true? By the way Chicago looks amazing too but the crime rate... eh...

Well, I have to say that's part true, but that happens everywhere haha:P While I was there I had a small problem with a resident: I was in the subway, I don't speak fluent English so I didn't realize a woman was talking to me so she started complaining and treatening me in a rude way haha, and I also knew a rude donnut dealer:) Also many people in the street was complaining, but, hey, I'm focusing at a bad way, many more people was friendlier;)

As strike just stated, people will be rude regardless of where you are. Sometimes a person might be having a bad day and unfortunately takes it out on everyone else.
