Help me build a PC

Featured Replies

Hey, I was considering building a new PC, primarily for playing LSPDFR and ArmA 3. I also stream and record videos.

My budget is 650 USD. I don't need you to build me an entire rig, but I would appreciate some help with picking a good GPU/CPU duo, keeping in mind that I need money left over to get the rest of the components.

Thanks. :)

There's a rough idea that I made for you. It will run you $672. I think that's one of the best sites for picking parts. It shows you many options, lets you filter them, shows you total costs, estimated power draw, and tells you if there's any incompatibilities between parts.

The build I linked you:

Corsair Mid Tower case

Intel Core i5-4440 @ 3.1 Ghz

Gigabyte Motherboard

16 GB of DDR3 RAM

EVGA GTX 1050 Ti (ACX 3.0 Cooling with 4 GB of VRAM)

450 Watt Corsair Power Supply

1 TB HDD (Cost effective, and sufficient storage for games)

This only took me two minutes to make, I'm sure you could improve the price/performance ratio more if you tweak the list yourself. This is mostly to simply provide you an example, and to give you an idea of what you can get for around $650.  I'd say this is okay for medium settings, @ 60 FPS in most games.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I'm quite familiar with PCpartpicker, though I did not know it actually did would tell me of incompatibilities. I wonder why is the 1050 so cheap?

Because it's a relatively low mid-range card, and imo not really future proof, further more I really don't think you need an aftermarket cooler, unless you are purchasing an overclockable processor.

The i5 4440 is a locked processor so you won't be able to overclock that.

Getting your case air flow up to par is more important.

What I did, and you'd have to be a little bit of a diy'er is I sawed 2 holes in the top of my case, and put 2 fans in with 2 fan protectors as finishing touch.

This got my case temp down by 20 degrees, and I'm not kidding. (I'm running an R9 390/ 8GB which gets particularly hot)

This is just an idea of what you 'could' do.

BTW this is a sharkoon Rex 3 Value case which didn't come with top vents.

It also had a 'smoke' plexiglass pane in it, which I replaced for a 'clear' one.

The rest of the parts Original Light pointed out for you are perfect.

I wanna point out that this is my opinion and how I would go about this, it's your own choice ofcourse

If I wanted a overclockable processor in that price range, what would you recommend? Assuming, overclocking is useful.

Sorry to jump in, but Intel 6600K hands down.  You really can't beat it for the value and performance.  I believe I paid a little over $200 for it and overclocked it to 4.5Ghz.  I do have a liquid cooler however, but the temps are still very low even under load.

Alright, I am going for the 6600K. Now about the graphics card, do you guys think I can do ANY better for the same price? Thanks for all the replies. :)

EDIT: I made a part list, can I get some feedback? I made some changes and I'm worried about the RAM operating voltage notice down below the list, is that an important thing? Thanks.

Hey man! I bought a gaming PC for about $550, with an AMD FX-6300 Six-Core CPU and a Nvidia GeForce GT 730 GPU, and I run most of my games on either high (GTA IV, GTA V, American Truck Sim) or the highest settings (iRacing, Flight Simulator X, Car Mechanic Sim 2015, World of Tanks). The only game I have to run on low with my computer is Beam.NG Drive, but overall it's a nice setup and more wallet-friendly than others. From what I see on Amazon, GT 730s will cost you from around $67-$90, depending on if you go with the 1 or 2GB versions (correct me if I'm wrong but I do believe bigger is better, and I believe MSI has a 4GB card), but it's a decent GPU that will get the job done (at least until I can save the money to upgrade to a GeForce GTX 1050!).

If you're looking to overclock in the future, which I think you are.  You will need to get a Z170 type of a motherboard.  I am pretty sure 6600k will not overclock on other motherboards.

Yup, discussed with some of my friends, they suggested the same changes. I will order the new hardware soon, thanks for all the help, everyone. :)

Are you still looking for a gaming PC, I took your PCPartPicker list from December 30th and got rid of the 16gb of RAM and got you a better graphics card, an Rx 480.
