Worth it to get an Xbox One controller?

Featured Replies

Hi all.

So I have a few Xbox 360 controllers, left over from when I had an Xbox 360. They work just fine, no wear and tear despite the fact I've dropped the one I use on my PC the most many times.
Should I get a wired Xbox One controller? I've heard that the triggers are better, and all that. I'm wondering if it'll make it easier for me to drive at slower speeds if that's the case. Does anyone have one and use it on GTA V?

If you do, feel free to give me your opinion on this. I want to be able to justify the price, in my currency it'll cost me £34, and I'm rather poor right now.

Shouldnt hurt to have a Xbox One controller, In fact, I just got a custom designed one delivered today from Microsoft with the intention of using it on my computer since I do not own an Xbox One, Its wireless and I had purchased the optional Charge n Play kit which comes with a rechargeable battery and a usb cable that lets you connect it to a computer, I have intentions to get the wireless receiver for the controller soon.

I prefer wireless due to the wired cable getting in the way of my keyboard should I need to type something in.

So far I have only tried it on Forza 6 Apex, and when it comes to games like GTA, Im a keyboard master but I wouldnt mind trying GTA V with my new controller.

Final thought on the subject, even if it doesnt give you an improvement in GTA V, It would come in handy to have a controller on hand and take the controller to a friends place who might only have 1 controller for their own Xbox One.

Do you have any opinion on the triggers? How easy is it to drive slowly in GTA V?

I got mine a year ago xbox1 i love it i went from a ps4 controler to this one the vibration is stronger and yes u can drive slow i do all the time over all is the best controller i have ever use will never trade it for anything and u can also get the adapter to make it wireless i havent done that yet because i dnt wanna be buying battery all the time but if your thinking of getting one go for it u wont regret it

They are awesome overall. Get a custom skin for it to make it your own :) dbrand always impresses & only $5 usually for one. Mine lasted for 2 years until I threw the controller in a R6 Siege moment in August. New controller, 5 more dollars for mahogany, everything's right as rain.

I won't bother with skins, I don't have that kind of money. They're £34 for me on Amazon, I can barely afford that, which is why I'm asking if they're worth it. Don't want to spend my money and then realise the Xbox One controller works just about the same as my still perfectly fine 360 controllers

I have had a chance to try my Xbox One controller in GTA V, I have noticed I have to pull the acceleration trigger back halfway to get a car to move, but holding the trigger as still as I could still had the car accelerating as if I were pulling back further on the trigger to accelerate to higher speed.

@Pipeline, I hope this reply is useful/helpful to you.

Have not used the 360 controller, but I can tell you that it's very easy to drive slow with my Xbox One controller.

I play with an Xbox 360 wireless controller. I recently switched from console gaming to PC gaming upon purchasing an Alienware system. I have an Xbox 360, Playststion 3, and Xbox One. I have been a console gamer for almost 10 years. The only real difference that I can tell between the Xbox One controller and the Xbox 360 controller would be the triggers, the buttons above the triggers, and the d-pad. Of course there's all this other stuff like "a more solid button response" or whatever, but that's all generic stuff that really isn't significantly noticeable.

Specifically looking at the controller, the trigger for the Xbox One is designed a little different. It gradually gets wider towards the top of the trigger whereas the trigger on the Xbox 360 is straight up and down. The wider button admittedly gives you a little more "wiggle room" to miss the trigger if you're constantly switching between the trigger and other buttons like I do. The buttons that are directly above the triggers, LB and RB, on either side are designed slightly different, but I haven't really noticed any significant improvement or difference with it other than a more solid push. Finally, the d-pad for the Xbox 360 has a webbed design. All of the buttons in each direction connect to each other, one big web with four directional buttons. The Xbox One removes the webbing design, which puts space between them. For me, this does come in handy because it allows me a definite button push when I use the d-pad. I have an issue where sometimes I'll be so deep into the game that I'll hit the d-pad and push two directions at once because it goes in the middle. I don't have this issue with the Xbox One.

Overall, in my opinion, if you need a new controller go with the Xbox One controller. But if you've already got a working controller and you don't have any technical issues or gameplay issues, stick with what you've got.

Something that I wonder that's a little related is... can I adjust the sensitivity of the triggers? So that I can hold it at a specific point and not be accelerating? There doesn't seem to be an option in GTA V's settings to adjust the sensitivity of the triggers when in a vehicle, or even the deadzone.

I don't think you can. I tried to do the same thing a few months ago and couodn't find any results. I think that there's actually an Xbox One controller out there with interchangeable parts. Like you can personalize the vibration sensitivity and you can adjust how far the trigger goes when pulled.

I've tried a x Box One Controller for V, honestly it isn't worth the price or the hassle of having random keybinds, and not all callouts/scripts support controllers, and IMO it is easier to drive with the keyboard. I would recommend saving up for a racing wheel such as the G27, or a mechanical keyboard.

I already use an Xbox 360 controller for driving in GTA V. Because when you use a keyboard, every time time you accelerate from a standstill you burnout. Which is stupid.

Driving around with a controller is obviously a lot smoother as Pipeline pointed out.  I can do all the basic LSPDFR controls with the controller, then use the keyboard for specific plugins/callouts.

Why would you recommend a racing wheel for GTA V?
