Featured Replies

hey all i know this is WAY outta wack, but, i'm in the market to buy a crown vic, an 03 seem's pretty decent, however, i saw about 5 or 6 ad's for them, ALL different prices for the same thing, what do you you think a good base/solid price offer would be in canadian? this applies to everybody, i just don't really understand the euro system

Around here they range from $3k-$8k depending on the year, mileage, condition, etc. That is for the police interceptor version that the local agencies sell when they are decommissioning their old ones. If you are talking about buying a newer civilian one then I have no idea what the price range would be. My suggestion is to not buy old police cars because they are usually pretty old and beaten on. When I was a sheriff's explorer I logged hundreds of hours of ride alongs with my sheriff's office and I can tell you from experience that police beat the shit out of their cars both for fun and for legitimate purposes.

+1 l3ubba, some of the crown vic's bodies are in amazing shape but the one i saw that i wanted had almost 300,000km on it, i don't really think i'm left with any other option but to buy retired as i haven't seen a crown vic at an actual ford dealership.. go figure

Yeah I would bet it is kinda hard to find a brand new Crown Vic now because 2011 was the last year they made them but I'm sure you could get a barely used 2010-2011 civilian Crown Vic. And yes for used police cars they can have great exterior and sometimes even great interior conditions, but as far as mechanical reliability it isn't as great. I have seen lots of great looking used police cars with next to perfect exterior and interior condition, but they are high mileage and have been driven to death. That is just the nature of police cars, it doesn't matter if it is a CVPI, Charger, Impala, Expedition, Tahoe, etc. if it was a police car it has been driven hard and been through a lot, that is what police do to cars.

at least they are put to good use, sadly, i don't want to pay a shit ton of money for a car just to have to put a shit ton more of money just to keep it on the road, plus, insurance is ridiculous out here in Nova Scotia, you have to pay for plates which is $150.00 a year, plus an extra $1000.00-$1500.00 to put tag's on it, then every 2-3 month's have to pay $300.00 to $400.00 to keep tag's on it, if you don't pay that, your insurance get's cancelled, suspended THEN you have to pay the $1000.00-$1500.00 AGAIN.. sadly, this day and age a run down retired police vehicle just isn't enough to keep on the road :(

If you can find one for 3-5k, just spend 1.5-2k to replace the transmission. That would be the largest of my worries as its the most expensive thing to replace. That gives the vehicle a new lease on life.

I lurked until I saw this topic, and I'd figured I'd chime in.

First of all, if your looking for a Panther platform car why not look at a Grand Marquis? Same car, different badging. A mid 90's to early 00's shouldn't be much more than a retired P71 and should be in much better shape.

FWIW, all civi model Crown Vics were discontinued in 2008 and they went to fleet sales only. Some post '08 LX's were sold to dealerships but they command a premium.

But if your set on a P71, the ones that are generally in best shape are detective or admin cars, being the least abused for the most part. Alas, most people that have them know that and want buku bucks for them or if they don't know what they have get bought up quick by people who do.

Agencies that have "take-home" cars is another route. Departments that have their officers or deputies that have an car assigned to them that is taken home with them after each shift. Usually less pooling of the cars and less idle time on the engine, although being a PD car it's going to have a lot of extra idle time and abuse as is.

If the car came from a poorer department usually that means the longer the car was in service and the more beat up it will be by the time it hits the auction block.

City and State(No idea about Canadian) agencies usually "pool" the cars between officers so often times the car is running 24/7. They might be sold off at 60-80K miles but those numbers conceal the thousands apon thousands of hours of idle time on the car.

The Ford Panther Platform is very robust, and a well mantained car should last a long time. It's quite common for Taxi fleets to buy used up P71's and run them for 300,000 miles. On the other hand, it's not uncommon either for people to end up with used up clunkers.

The biggest point on buying these cars is that you need to know what your looking for.

As always YMMV.
