I got hacked on steam. My Story.

Featured Replies

So today I was on gta v steam forums. This person claimed they had a fix on gta v lag and stutter and told me to download their original gta v launcher so I did. I replaced the file on my gta v directory. Launched the game and it logged me out of steam. At this point I knew I got hacked and was very stupid. I changed my pass straight away but still got hacked. I removed the virus using an anti-virus. I was in complete shock as my credit card details were on my account. I called up my credit card company and immediately canceled my account. I created a steam support ticket but I doubt they will reply..ever. I had my account since 2010 and had so many games. I never though this day would come. Call me stupid, but I was. Very stupid. I should had listened to my anti-virus but the forum discussion seemed legit. http://steamcommunity.com/app/271590/discussions/#p2 thats the link for the discussion. My steam name is Contingency. Hope everyone will learn from here and be careful when clicking links to unknown websites. #FreeContingency

To the person that stole my account.. I will find you..and I will kill you..

The discussion is called GTA V crash fix/ stutter fix.

UPDATE: Got my account back. Negotiated with the person who stole it and they gave it back. I had to give him £10.

  • Glad everything has worked out for the best in your case! :)

Always check files from unknown sources (if you are hellbent on downloading them) on https://www.virustotal.com/ , it scans with something like 50 different databases. Even if it doesn't get detected you will assist others because they distribute the file to antivirus developers for analysis.

Malwarebytes is also amazing (linked in the previous reply) but you have to pay for active protection.

I personally run Avast + occasional malwarebytes scan and I have no issues. You can use windows defender and Security Essentials as well but you'd honestly be better off using something with more active security features.

you got no more virus on your PC

It's worth noting that malwarebytes is antimalware, not antivirus, and is not a replacement for antivirus (the company even says so itself)

Last time I got "hacked" was back in 08... For my 360 account needless to say I weeped uncontrollably for an hour on my side account with my alleged hacker and got my account back. :)

You paid the hacker money to give you your account back? Pretty stupid, Steam would've given it back to you for free.

Moneys not an issue thus steam support sucks I never got a reply back in weeks after an issue which means more time for the hacker to mess up my account and play games etc.

Strange, I've had a steam account issue before and they responded / resolved it within a few hours. It's fine that money is not an issue for you, but you are basically enabling and encouraging this 'individual' to extort other people going forward - and for some people, money is an issue.

Ah, I see. I sent different support tickets and still no reply. Steam did mention that their support service sucks but they said it will get better. I was very sad when I got hacked. It's not a nice thing but I did what I had to do to get that account back no matter the cost. I did also explain things to the hacker about how it feels to hack another person account and how they should think about others of how they feel. It's depressing that hackers really do this and think of themselves. Makes me sick tbh.

I did update the post. It was a keylogger. I immediately declined my credit card and removed the card from paypal. The credit card company is sending me a new one.

Do you have a link on the post you received the keylogger from?

I don't have the link anymore. There are numerous post on steam gta v discussions and turns out many people are trying to hack peoples account and people have fallen for it..

How did you pay the guy? If it was through PayPal or through credit/debit card do a chargeback.

I wouldn't chargeback, it would lead him to having his paypal locked. Because if payal gets a unauthorized claim, they would lock his account, and if hes underage, Paypal would never unlock it since he would break the TOS. What he should do is having him call paypal and explain the situation.

I had money stored in my paypal. I only have two cards. I didn't mind paying him as the situation is sorted :)
