Thoughts on Kendrick's new album (To Pimp A Butterfly)?

Who?

Kendrick Lamar. One of the most popular and well known rap and pop artists in America. Very well known within this genre of the music industry.

I haven't heard it yet, but I imagine that it sounds great.

That's probably why I've never heard of him. I don't listen to rap or pop (very often) and I despise listening to the radio.

I'm sure they'll overplay it to death in good time when it makes it way over here.

What I like about Kendrick, and rap now in general, is that I think anyone can relate to it and identify with the meanings or emotions of a song. I'm not a fan of "gansta" rap in part because I can't really relate to it. Guys like Kendrick Lamar or Childish Gambino appeal to a more general audience, and I think rap is moving in a positive direction.

As long as it's not about sex (and how much better they are at it than you), money (and how much more they have than you) and doing drugs, then yes, it is moving in a better direction.

At first when listening to the album I was like "what am I even listening to right now?" reason being is it kind of sounded jazzy, and I couldn't really relate to the lyrics at first. So after listening to the whole album and reaching the song Mortal Man the lyrics started speaking to me, and I actually understood the whole album, and the message he was giving to us, the consumers. I've now listened to the whole album four times, and my first vote was a 6.5/10 after listening to it a second time understanding the message an easy 8.5/10. Truly remarkable, and its just what we need in this generation no more rapping about sex, drugs, money.

Sex, drugs, and money still come up in his music, but I think the way he integrates it is better. Sometimes his sexual lyrics are actually pretty funny.

You aren't a minority in that. I really do hate hearing about that shit.
