Flight Simmers: Is FS2Crew Worth It?

Recommended Posts

So, FS2Crew is on sale for 25% off right now. To those of you who have experience with it, is it worth the $25? Watching some videos of it, it seems to reduce workload significantly (seeing as how commercial airliners are designed to be flown with two pilots, not one) and the ability to call out commands without having to pan the camera sounds like a godsend, especially during take off and landing when you're hand flying the plane. Any thoughts?

Payware is a tricky thing to decide on. I only ever bought one payware pack during my three years of flight simming and while it was neat, I don't think it was particularly worth the money I spent on it. Hell, I even had a three hundred dollar Cessna yoke set shipped over from the states that I only ever used a few times before going back to my Attack 3.

As for this particular software, I've never heard of it yet alone used it myself but my advice, as with all payware products for FSX, would be to acquire it by other means first (either a trial or... you know) and if you like it, buy it. That, or read a bunch of reviews and decide from there.

Alright, thanks guys. I'll save it for something else then. It's scary how expensive payware addons are for FSX. Like $35 for a camera mod, essentially. Absolutely insane.

I would recommend EZCA though. It's a nice little addon. But I do agree, $35 is too much for that.

What other addons do you have?

Only issue with that is that once people torrent it just to "try it out" they rarely have any incentive to go and buy a legitimate copy after they determined they liked it. They already have a copy so why buy it?

On topic, FS2Crew is a fantastic addon however I have not been using it lately. Sometimes I like to run through all the procedures myself which also helps keep me current on the F/O's flows. Personally I think it is well worth the money and adds more immersion and realism into the sim but I wouldn't call it a "must have" addon.

EZCA on the other hand, well worth the $35. I am not sure what I did before I had this addon. If you fly in the VC then this is the greatest addon you can have, especially if you don't have TrackIR. Active Sky, FSUIPC, and EZCA are some of the most important addons I run, I don't do any flights without them.

I've always wondered, do REX and Active Sky work together? I have Rex Essential +OverDrive, and I'm thinking of getting Active Sky, and I would like to know if they work together before I buy it.

(Sorry to hi-jack thread, but since we're talking about FSX addons.)

They sure do. I run Active Sky Next with REX 4 (although I'm considering going back to REX Essentials +OverDrive). It is the best combination; accurate, real time weather with awesome graphics to go with it.

What other addons do you have?

Utility wise, pretty much nothing. The only payware stuff I have are several airliners that I've picked up over the years including the PMDG MD-11, the Captain Sim 757, and my beloved NGX.

I have always wanted to get EZDok but, I just have a really hard time justifying it at $35. I could buy a good quality payware model or hell, even a new-ish game on Steam for that price. As awesome as it sounds (and it's something that I've wanted for a long time) it is at the end of the day, a 6 year old piece of software that gives you new camera views and effects for a game that is itself 9 years old.

But, what now has me interested is you saying that it can make up for my lack of TrackIR. From what I know, you can customize presets around the cockpit and toggle them with a keystroke, which is already a feature in the default FSX, right? The only difference is that you can easily customize them without mucking around the aircraft.cfg.

Correct. It allows me to setup hotkeys to easily switch between views. I have a view for looking out of the cockpit, looking at my instruments, looking left or right out of the cockpit, etc. I have the Logitech G510 keyboard so I have plenty of G keys to customize. I customize each one to my aircraft so I have a set of cameras for my PMDG NGX, PMDG MD11, A2A C182, and all my other aircraft. If you get a copy of it I can even send you my camera settings in a zip file and you can load them into your Ezdok. With the recent update to Ezdok it is also compatible with P3D so it isn't just for FSX. EZCA is incredibly customizable and lots of people upload their camera sets so you can tweak them to however you like.

Ezdok is more than that. It provides more realistic movements when taking off, landing, ect. If you're the pilot in a real plane, the plane would probably shift you around a little, but in FSX, you only really "shift" around when you use the plane rudders (at least in the NGX, not sure if PMDG did that), and Ezdok provides you with those shifts in movement that add realism.

An example of the shifts would be this video:

Yes, that is a very exaggerated video though. Personally I do not like flying with those setting turned all the way up as I don't feel they are very realistic and it makes it hard to flip switches or push buttons when the camera is moving around all the time so I have those setting turned down to a more realistic level. I also have cameras set up focused on certain panels that have these setting turned completely off so if I need to I can zoom to those panels and do what I need to do without having the camera bouncing around on me. This is all personal preference though, some people like having those settings turned up and the nice thing about Ezdok is you can customize it however you want.

So, are there any kind of 'must have' payware mods for FSX? There's quite a few around, but aside from HD ground textures I can't see what other cool stuff there could be.

I just listed a couple, but it depends on what you do in FSX. There are plenty of good aircraft, scenery, and utility addons that add a lot to the sim. I mostly fly commercial and general aviation aircraft so most of my addons focus on that.
