Debating Revitalizing Current PC or Making New Build

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

As of late, my PC hasn't been keeping up with games as I had hoped.

My PC was a prebuilt one from late 2011 made by CyberPower. It came with:

Intel Core i7 960 @ 3.20 Ghz

Nvidia GTX 570

12 Gigs of RAM

Mid Tower Cooler Master case

Windows 7 Home Edition

Since then, I've upgraded the GPU to an EVGA GTX 680 Superclocked Signature Edition 2.

When I installed that card in January 2013, I was expecting it to run games from 2014 on High/Ultra with decent FPS and minimal stuttering, but I was wrong. So now, I'm considering whether to build a completely new PC (as a graduation gift, since I'm already getting a PS4 and new TV for Christmas and my Birthday (which is in a few days).

I'll build a new PC if my current processor is holding me back, but I'm not sure if it is or not? If it's not, will installing an EVGA GTX 980 ACX 2.0 revitalize my current PC for some years to come?

A new PC with the specs I want will likely run me 2K, which I'm not sure if I want to do or not. I'm also not sure if my current case will even fit a GTX 980.

Any opinions regarding this would be appreciated,

Nick

Edit:

Came up with an idea of a new build. Is this a good build? How much better is the processor than my current one, and will the build in general run most games on Ultra for a few years?

I'll carry over my monitor, and 1 TB hard drive, which will save me some money. Even the motherboard if it still has some life in it.

I don't think the bottleneck is the graphics card. I've been able to suck 4K resoultion GTA IV at Highest Settings with a 670 overclocked slightly above a 680.

You'll only really need the GPU upgrade if you're considering 4K gaming in the near future at high settings.

Maybe consider investing in a SSD.
