" A deputy with the Harris County Sheriff's Office was killed in a head-on crash Wednesday.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office has identified the fallen deputy as Jesse Valdez III, 32.

According to the sheriff's office, the crash happened in the early-morning hours as the deputy responded to a welfare check near Highlands in northeast Harris County. His sirens and flashing lights were off, investigators said.

Authorities said Valdez was traveling eastbound on East Wallisville Road when an oncoming SUV crossed the middle line, hitting the deputy's cruiser head-on. The patrol car spun into a drainage ditch as the Explorer spun into the center of the intersection."

The driver of the SUV was just released from prison less than a month ago on a drug related charge. The driver was found to have meth on her person when she hit the deputy head on.

Very sad stiation, but question, why would an offcier respond to a welfare check? Is it that important?

I imagine it wouldn't be a priority response, but if the police are called, the police will show up. That's their job, regardless of the call. It could have been someone from out of town that couldn't get a hold of a family member, so they called the police to check on them. I've read through some call reports that are publicly shared on my university's website and a lot of the calls are welfare checks; parents that are calling UPD to check on their child, since they can't.

RIP Deputy Valdez.

Welfare checks are fairly common for law enforcement...weather it maybe checking on a old women or some kids home alone...or a home or business.

A welfare check is pretty important....there are many cases of officers conducting welfare checks only to find out the home owner might have died or have been killed...or the house had been broken into, etc.
