Titanfall

It was enjoyable for a while for me, but I got bored of it. Although I really only like playing multiplayer games with people I know, so once they stopped playing, I stopped.

It is only multiplayer, but there is a campaign built into it.

"Work and ideas get stolen, then you keep moving on doing your thing."

I have it; and haven't stopped playing it since day 1.

I don't usually have much luck with online shooters. I used to play Counter Strike in all it's iterations, Day of Defeat, Battlefield, and Call of Duty. The only one I ever stuck with for any length of time was Battlefield and I dropped that like a bad habit after my first few rounds of TitanFall.

Respawn just got some big things right for me and I'm hooked. While there is a lot I would like to see changed or improved in later updates or in TitanFall 2, the game's core mechanics and game play are what really matter. Overall, I think the game is fantastic and highly recommend it to anyone. I'm going to be playing this game until TitanFall 2 comes out.

Good Things:

-BALANCE. This is the single biggest victory that TitanFall has over other shooters. There is no single weapon or peice of equipment that will instantly turn the tide of a fight. Everything is balanced, everything has a counter, and even the Titans themselves are not ridiculously over powered.

-Game play. The game play is fresh and innovative and never gets old for me. Between the wall running and parkour and the use of tactics and Titans, every match is different, every match is fun, and every match makes me feel like I've accomplished something even if I have a "bad round". Part of this is just the basic mechanics themselves, the wall running completely changes the game from what conventional shooters have. I also love that it is only 6 vs 6. The scale of the maps and the amped up ability of the pilots would just turn it into a cluster if there were more pilots in the match. I just remember my days of CoD where I would spawn and be killed within 10-15 seconds because there were so many players running around knifing or shotgunning people. TitanFall fills in the gaps by adding AI controlled "grunts" and "spectres", up to 16 at a time for each team. These "minions" are almost useless and do not have the mobility or lethality that pilots do, but they certainly can kill you if you don't take them seriously. While they mainly serve as cannon fodder, it helps to make you feel like you're accomplishing something and not being slaughtered by a pilot every 15 seconds. The grunts also contribute some of the most hysterical commentary I've ever heard and really help to add the the lore of the TitanFall universe.

-Campaign. The game is strictly multiplayer yes, but there is a campaign mode with does a laudable attempt at infusing a story.

-Mechanics. Some of my favorite mechanics in the game are the burn cards. Burn cards are sort of like the "kill / death streaks" from Call of Duty. They are one time use cards that give you a buff as long as you stay alive. Things like more lethal weapons, extra grenades, shave time off your Titan drop, earn double XP, etc. None of these are really over powered, and they only last until you die, but using the right burn card at the right time can really help your team along. Burn cards add a welcome element of strategy and planning that I haven't seen in any other game, and they don't end up feeling cheap or being spammed like the CoD streaks did. The addition of the Black Market where you can sell unwanted burn cards and buy other card packs that you want was a great change with the last free update.

-TEAMWORK. Teamwork wins the match, period. I am an objective based player and I do not enjoy "kill all the things" game modes. The scoring in TitanFall is largely geared towards objective and teamwork based actions, so I thrive and consistently am the MVP for my team.

Bad Things:

-Campaign. I know I listed this a good thing above, but it's taken a turn for the worse with the last update. In an effort to help smooth out the match making, they changed the campaign mode from a legitimate campaign mode to a continuous loop playlist of the campaign missions in order. Unfortunately, they also now have the match making swap teams before every match. So, you could be on the IMC one match and the Militia the next, which basically makes the stories and characters disjointed and nothing more than background noise. But, it's still better than the conventional multiplayer formula.

-Match Making. The game uses match making instead of dedicated servers. While they've made some significant improvements in the way the match making works, it still leaves me scratching my head sometimes and it may take a few minutes to find a match depending on the time of day and the game mode you've selected. The match making also uses a "skill" system rather than your level to determine who to pair you with, and the skill ranking you have is based on session. So, when you first start paying for the day you'll have no "skill" history until you've played a few matches. Once you've got a few matches done and the system ranks your skill, it starts to match you with players of the same relative skill set so it's all good, but those first few rounds can either go really well, or really poorly.

-A few balance wild cars. As I mentioned above, balance is everything in an online FPS, and TitanFall manages to handle balance exceedingly well. Except for a few things... Everyone's opinion is different, but there are 2 things that occasionally grief me; the Smart Pistol, and the Stryder Titan. The Smart Pistol is an auto lock on weapon that does not require you to aim; you simply keep an enemy in your field of view for a few seconds and the pistol locks onto the target with "homing" rounds that guarantee a kill. The biggest balance on this weapon is supposed to be the 3-5 seconds it takes to lock onto an enemy pilot and it leaves you vulnerable. However, skilled players use the game's parkour and wall running mechanics to out maneuver you since you have to aim down sights with a conventional weapon and they don't, and I frequently find myself getting mowed down by the Smart Pistol. I personally think it needs a nerf and I hope Respawn does too at some point. Fortunately it's not really used excessively, but it can be really annoying when someone brings it out. The Stryder is the "fast, but squishy" Titan. In my opinion it moves a little too fast, especially when it's dash core is activated allowing it to dash infinitely for a minute or two. I frequently see Stryder's practically ice skating around the map which makes them almost impossible to kill, and they crush everything and everyone under foot. It gets rather annoying in a hurry. Aside from these two minor balance issues, the game excels in this area, and these two complaints are largely my personal opinion.

-Lack of customization and options. There is no character customization in this game; your appearance is based on what weapon you are using. There are only a handful of weapons, sidearms, and kits to choose from. They kept it small, but balanced, and there are only 3 Titans to choose from. Again, small but balanced, though this may be off putting for people looking to fully customize their character. They added limited Titan customization in a free update a while ago which offers a custom emblem and Titan Operating System Voice, but that's about it.

I don't know, just seems like people are making Titanfall to be more then what it really is. In my opinion, the game is being over-hyped, kind of like Watch Dogs.

I feel like one of the biggest issues in the gaming community, are the high expectations of the gamer's. Gamer's are beginning expect more then what a lot of these companies' are providing. Just look at GTA Online, The Elder Scrolls Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Guild Wars 2 for quick examples. Now everyone is getting hyped for GTA 5 coming to PC. I just hope it doesn't turn into another disappointment.

Games are largely a matter of personal opinion.

My opinion on TitanFall is explained above, short version is I love it and play almost every day.

I never felt GTA Online was over hyped, mainly because I was never interested in it to begin with.

I'm still playing Star Wars: The Old Republic. Pre-ordered the collectors edition, been playing since day one and I feel like it totally lived up to the hype. It's everything I could have wanted and more, and it's the only MMO that's ever been able to hold my interest for more than a few days.

Point is, the experience all relative to the user.
